Review of Generalized anxiety disorders across the lifespan: An integrative approach.

Reviews the book Generalized anxiety disorder across the lifespan: An integrative approach (see record 2009-04840-000) by Michael E. Portman. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) perhaps might be construed to be the overlooked and neglected stepchild of the various anxiety disorders within the current psychopathological and psychotherapeutic literatures. Portman’s book is an important and largely successful attempt to fill this gap in the literature. In it, the author describes the clinical presentation and phenomenology of the disorder, considers the history of the anxiety disorders that were precursors to the current diagnostic category, reviews the process of, and criteria for, accurate diagnosis of GAD, and concisely summarizes the most important theoretical explanations of the etiology, structure, and reviews the most important and frequently cited treatments for GAD. This book would be a useful and important addition to the library of any graduate student or established researcher who is considering conducting research on any facet of GAD. Childhood physical abuse, internalized homophobia, and experiential avoidance among lesbians and gay men.

This study explored relations among childhood physical abuse, internalized homophobia, experiential avoidance, and current psychological symptoms in a community sample of 122 adult lesbians and 115 adult gay men. Childhood physical abuse predicted depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Furthermore, for gay men, internalized homophobia completely mediated the relation between childhood physical abuse and depression symptoms and partially mediated the relation between childhood physical abuse and PTSD symptoms. However, experiential avoidance did not mediate these relations. In contrast, experiential avoidance partially mediated the relation between childhood physical abuse and PTSD symptoms among lesbians; however, internalized homophobia did not mediate these relations. These findings suggest that internalized homophobia and experiential avoidance may have differential mediating roles in predicting psychological symptoms among lesbians and gay men who have experienced childhood physical abuse. As an introduction to the special issue on attachment theory as a foundation for psychotherapy integration, this article will review the uses to which the theory has been employed by integrative theorists and clinicians during the past four decades. Reasons that this theory has been so influentially within psychotherapy integration are discussed, as are some of the models that are explicitly based on attachment theory. Extraordinarily high plastic deformation in polyurethane/silica nanoparticle nanocomposites with low filler concentrations

We have synthesized segmented polyurethane (SPU)/silica nanoparticle (SiNP) nanocomposites with extraordinarily high tensile strength and strain-at-break using an in-situ polymerization method with low SiNP concentrations. A 20-fold increase in strain-at-break compared with the pristine polymer has been achieved for the 0.5 wt% SiNP nanocomposites. A suite of characterization tools including transmission electron microscopy, ultra-small angle X-ray scattering, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis has been used to correlate the phase morphology, crystallization, and mechanical properties. The location of SiNP in the phase separated SPU is believed to be the main reason for the mechanical property enhancement.     

Mechanisms of Solution Reactions of Cyclo-Penta[cd]Pyrene Oxide and Acenaphthylene Oxide

Rates and products of the acid-catalyzed and spontaneous reactions of cyclopenta[cd]pyrene oxide (2) and acenaphthalene oxide (3) in 1:3 dioxane-water and water, respectively, have been determined. Both 2 and 3 undergo acid-catalyzed hydrolyses to yield cis diol as the major product, and undergo spontaneous reactions to yield predominantly ketone products. The mechanisms of these reactions are discussed.
