Natural cataclysms (earthquakes, hurricanes and so forth) become natural disasters when they coincide with vulnerabilities; unfortunately, informal settlements in developing countries are only too often highly vulnerable – a reality amply and unhappily confirmed by available statistics. In this context, reconstruction projects are sandwiched between the short‐term necessity to act promptly and the long‐term requirements of sustainable community development – a situation that is currently reflected in alternative and conflicting paradigms at the policy level.

Adopting a case‐study approach, we explore the use of temporary housing within two post‐disaster environments, where the impact of different organizational designs leads to fundamentally different solutions to the short‐term housing problem.

Our research adopts a dynamic systems approach, associating strategic organizational team design with the development of tactical technical proposals. Two case studies from Turkey and Colombia show that a coherent approach to the sequential stages of providing immediate shelter, temporary housing and permanent reconstruction is not always obtained. The research results emphasize that the performance of reconstruction projects is directly linked to the design and management of the project team.  相似文献

As potential candidates for photonic devices, non-linear materials and coatings, 22 glasses in the TeO2–WO3–PbO system have been formulated and prepared by conventional melting at temperatures ranging between 710 and 750 °C. The glass forming area has been determined for a wide region of the corresponding ternary diagram. Structural characterisation of the glasses was conducted through FTIR spectrometry and the variation of density values, which allowed calculation of the glass molar volume and the oxygen molar volume. UV–VIS spectra were recorded to determine optical absorption/transmission and energy gap values. Likewise, such results were correlated with the glasses composition and their ability for optical materials. DTA curves yielded data of transition temperature (Tg), onset crystallisation temperature (Tc) and the thermal stability range of glasses. Crystalline phases formed in devitrified and partially devitrified glasses were detected by X-ray diffraction. The properties and structural features of glasses were discussed in terms of their relative proportion of former/modifier oxides. The main glass former oxide is TeO2, which arranges [TeO4] groups with tetrahedral coordination, while PbO plays as glass modifier oxide. Tungsten oxide is incorporated as network former, alternating with TeO2 and forming mixed linkages Te–O–W and W–O–W. WO3 is the component that contributes most to increase the glass transition temperature, and to decrease both the oxygen molar volume and the thermal expansion coefficient.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the production of hydrogen in a two-stage CSTR system – both reactors having the same volume – and compare its performance with a conventional one-stage process. The lab-scale two-stage and one-stage systems were operated at five pHs and five hydraulic retention time (HRTs). The maximum volumetric hydrogen productivity and yield obtained with the two-stage system were 5.8 mmol L−1 h−1 and 2.7 mol H2 mol glucose−1, respectively, at an HRT of 12 h and pH 5.5. Overall, the two-stage system showed, at steady state, a better performance that the one-stage system for all the evaluated pHs. However, a comparison between the one-stage system, operating at 6 h of HRT, and the first reactor of the two-stage system at the same HRT did not show any significant difference, highlighting the positive impact of having a two-stage process. The determination of the ratio between the experimental measured H2 in the gas phase and the theoretical H2 generated in the liquid phase (discrepancy factor) indicated that an important part of the hydrogen produced in the first reactor was transferred into the second reactor instead of being desorbed in the headspace. Therefore, the improving of hydrogen production in the two-stage system is rather attributed to the increased transfer of hydrogen from liquid to gas than an actual total hydrogen production increase.  相似文献

In the random utility modelling context, choice probabilities are unaffected by increasing linear transformations of the systematic utility; hence its empirical specification is derived on the basis that only differences in utility matters and that the scale of utility is arbitrary. We argue that choice probabilities remain unchanged if these linear transformations are made under the deterministic perspective of a single individual choosing several times. But, in the random utility setting, parameter estimates might be significantly affected by these transformations. In particular we focus on the effect of two order-preserving transformations usually applied in the derivation of the representative utility from the conditional indirect utility function: adding a constant to the utility of all alternatives and multiplying each alternative utility by a constant. We concentrate on the two most popular specifications in transport mode choice: the “wage rate” (Train and McFadden Transport Res 12:349–353, 1978) and the “expenditure rate” (Jara-Díaz and Farah Transport Res 22B:159–171, 1987) specifications. Using a collection of synthetic datasets generated in a new fashion directly from the conditional indirect utility function, i.e. before applying any expansion or transformation, we demonstrate how taking this class of order-preserving transformations could lead to misinterpretation of the econometric results, such as detecting randomly distributed and correlated parameters and/or income and time effects which are in fact not present.  相似文献

The flavonoid fraction in saffron spice has been analysed, for the first time, by LC-DAD-MS/MS ESI and five kaempferol derivatives have been found. Compounds such as kaempferol-3-sophoroside, kaempferol-3-sophoroside-7-glucoside and kaempferol-3,7,4′-triglucoside were tentatively identified, whereas other compounds, such as kaempferol tetrahexoside and kaempferol-3-dihexoside were detected. Saffron samples from different geographical origins were clearly separated by their kaempferol 3-sophoroside contents that were able to explain 100% of the variance when a discriminant test was carried out.  相似文献

The evolution of the Maillard reaction (MR) by measuring the available lysine and furosine (FUR) contents in adapted and follow‐up powdered milk‐based infant formulas over the shelf‐life storage period, at 20 and 37 °C, was studied. Available lysine and FUR contents were determined by fluorimetry and high‐performance liquid chromatography respectively. Statistically significant differences were found between adapted and follow‐up infant formulas with respect to the available lysine and FUR contents. Available lysine contents decreased significantly throughout the storage time, and the contents at 37 °C were lower than at 20 °C. A statistically significant increase in FUR contents was observed during the storage period, with the contents being high at 37 °C than at 20 °C. A simple regression analysis between the available lysine and FUR contents during (a) the first year (b) the second year and (c) the two storage years was applied. The best correlations were obtained during the first year of storage. The results obtained show a clear MR evolution during the storage of infant formulas.
