In 4 experiments, the authors varied the extent and nature of participant movement in a virtual environment to examine the influence of action on estimates of geographical slant. Previous studies showed that people consciously overestimate hill slant but can still accurately guide an action toward the hill (D. R. Proffitt, M. Bhalla, R. Gossweiler, & J. Midgett, 1995). Related studies suggest that one's potential to act may influence perception of slant and that distinct representations may independently inform perceptual and motoric responses. The authors found that in all conditions, perceptual judgments were overestimated and motoric adjustments were more accurate. The virtual environment allowed manipulation of the effort required to walk up simulated hills. Walking with the effort appropriate to the visual slant led to increased perceptual overestimation of slant compared with active walking with the effort appropriate to level ground, while visually guided actions remained accurate. This review summarizes data from self-reported and observational studies describing the nature, frequency, and circumstances of occupational blood exposures among US dental workers between 1986 and 1995. These studies suggest that, among US dentists, percutaneous injuries have declined steadily over the 10-year period. Data also suggest that, in 1995, most dental workers (dentists, hygienists assistants, and oral surgeons) experienced approximately three injuries per year. Work practices (eg, using an instrument instead of fingers to retract tissue), safer instrumentation or design (eg, self-sheathing needles, changes in dental-unit design), and continued worker education may reduce occupational blood exposures in dentistry further.  相似文献

A questionnaire was sent to all 158 staff of the operating department of a London teaching hospital to confirm their hepatitis B immunization status and establish the number of incidents involving exposure to blood during the preceding 4 weeks. Of these personnel, 104 (66 per cent) were known to be immune to hepatitis B either through immunization (97) or previous infection (seven). A further 23 (15 per cent) had completed a course of immunization but their seroconversion had not been checked. There were 26 sharps injuries sustained by 14 (12 per cent) of 119 staff and 240 other exposures to blood. Four of the sharps injuries had been reported. Staff known to be immune were more likely than those with unknown or negative immunity to report incidents (20 versus 0 per cent (95 per cent confidence interval of difference 2-38 per cent)). Doctors sustained more non-sharps exposures to blood than others (47 versus 23 per cent (95 per cent confidence interval of difference 7-40 per cent)). An important minority of operating department staff remains unimmunized against hepatitis B, although exposure to blood is common. Incidents are rarely reported and staff with unknown or negative immunity seem less likely to report than those known to be immune.  相似文献

We propose and evaluate a system for content-based visualization and exploration of music collections. The system is based on a modification of Kohonen’s Self-Organizing Map algorithm and allows users to choose the locations of clusters containing acoustically similar tracks on the music space. A user study conducted to evaluate the system shows that the possibility of personalizing the music space was perceived as difficult. Conversely, the user study and objective metrics derived from users’ interactions with the interface demonstrate that the proposed system helped individuals create playlists faster and, under some circumstances, more effectively. We believe that personalized browsing interfaces are an important area of research in Multimedia Information Retrieval, and both the system and user study contribute to the growing work in this field.  相似文献

Hybrid miniemulsion polymerization was performed with a three‐component acrylic system of methyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate, and acrylic acid in the presence of a Bayer® Roskydal TPLS2190 unsaturated polyester resin. Latexes were obtained in which the polyester resin was grafted to the acrylic polymer, forming a water‐based crosslinkable coating. Grafting between the resinous component and the acrylic polymer is a feature different from the work of others who have attempted to combine the properties of both systems in water‐based blends. Both emulsions and latexes were shelf‐stable for over 6 months, shear‐stable, and resistant to at least one freeze/thaw cycle. Resin‐to‐monomer ratios were studied as high as 1 : 1 (wt : wt), and total emulsion solids, as high as 45%. Monomer droplet and latex particle sizes were similar, suggesting evidence of the preponderance of droplet nucleation. A high level of crosslinking (>70%) during polymerization was observed in this particular hybrid system in contrast to those involving alkyd or polyurethane resins (<5%). Films, both homogeneous and hard, were achieved with exceptional adhesion. Signal cancellation phenomena in adaptive antennas: Causes and cures   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
Conventional adaptive beamformers utilizing some form of automatic minimization of mean square error exhibit signal cancellation phenomena when adapting rapidly. These effects result from adaptive interaction between signal and interference, when signal and interference are received simultaneously. Similar phenomena have been observed and analyzed in relatively simple adaptive noise cancelling systems. A study of these phenomena in the simpler systems is used to provide insight into similar behavior in adaptive antennas. A method for alleviating signal cancellation has been devised by Duvall, whereby the signal components are removed from the adaptive process, then reinserted to form the final system output. Widrow has devised a different solution to the problem: to move the receiving array spatially (or electronically) to modulate emanations received off the look direction, without distorting useful signals incident from the look direction. This approach is called "spatial dither" and introduces the additional possibility of modulating "smart" jammer signals, thereby limiting their effectiveness.  相似文献

Silicone defoamers are used to control foam during the processing of fruit juices. Residual silicones in fruit juices can be separated from the naturally occurring siliceous materials in fruit products and selectively recovered by solvent extraction, after suitable pretreatment. The recovered silicone is measured by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Silicone concentrations as low as about 1 ppm can be measured. The juices are accurately spiked for recovery studies by the addition of silicone dispersed in D-sorbitol.  相似文献

Conventional broad-band array processing is accomplished by linearly combining the outputs of tapped-delay lines attached to each sensor of an array. This type of processing can be interpreted as using an all-zero digital filter at each sensor to generate a frequency-dependent magnitude and phase shift (weighting) over the array operating bandwidth. A new array processing method is presented which uses digital filters having both poles and zeros to perform the frequency-dependent array weighting. Several algorithms for adapting the pole-zero array filters are introduced. Computer simulations are then presented demonstrating the potential for substantial improvement in broad-band interference nulling provided by pole-zero array processing.  相似文献

Image boundaries are a fundamental component of many interactive digital photography techniques, enabling applications such as segmentation, panoramas, and seamless image composition. Interactions for image boundaries often rely on two complementary but separate approaches: editing via painting or clicking constraints. In this work, we provide a novel, unified approach for interactive editing of pairwise image boundaries that combines the ease of painting with the direct control of constraints. Rather than a sequential coupling, this new formulation allows full use of both interactions simultaneously, giving users unprecedented flexibility for fast boundary editing. To enable this new approach, we provide technical advancements. In particular, we detail a reformulation of image boundaries as a problem of finding cycles, expanding and correcting limitations of the previous work. Our new formulation provides boundary solutions for painted regions with performance on par with state‐of‐the‐art specialized, paint‐only techniques. In addition, we provide instantaneous exploration of the boundary solution space with user constraints. Finally, we provide examples of common graphics applications impacted by our new approach.  相似文献
