OBJECTIVES: To determine the comparative freezing ability of the Cryotech (CT) and AccuProbe (CMS) cryosurgical systems. METHODS: Four conditions designed to model clinical situations were produced: (1) Single-probe performance in water at 17 degrees C; (2) five-probe performance in water at 17 degrees C; (3) single-probe performance in gel at 22 degrees C; and (4) single-probe performance in bovine liver. Parameters evaluated included temperatures at various time points (rates to and final low temperature), configuration of a freeze zone, and shaft freezing characteristics. In addition, isotherms were measured at predetermined distances from the center of the freeze zone. RESULTS: Both systems provided freezing of various media under operational conditions. In water, the CMS 3-mm probe delivered more rapid freezing temperature rates than the 3-mm CT probe, with a 110 degrees C difference in probe surface temperature. In gel, the CMS probe increased freeze volume fourfold versus a twofold increase for the CT probe. In bovine liver, there was nearly equivalent performance with respect to geometry of the freeze ball. Extrapolation of the CT cooling curve indicated temperature equivalence at 30 minutes. A larger shaft diameter 4.9-mm CT probe produced results similar to the CMS probe in all the tested media. In addition, the freeze configuration of the CMS probe was spherical; the CT configuration was more cylindrical. CMS probe (equivalent diameter) tip temperatures were on average 100 degrees C lower. CONCLUSIONS: Our tests demonstrated differences between the CMS and CT probe. The major differences are in the configuration of the freeze zone and shaft freezing. In equivalent conditions, the CMS 3-mm probe delivered more rapid cooling rates, a more spherical freeze ball, and lower absolute temperatures than the CT 3-mm probe. The larger CT probe produces equivalent freezing temperatures to the CMS probe, albeit with a more spherical shape. However, these in vitro systems may not adequately reflect varied prostate morphology. Further research is under way to determine if these differences affect relative efficacy of cryotherapy of the prostate. 相似文献

Non-synchronous rotation of Europa was predicted on theoretical grounds, by considering the orbitally averaged torque exerted by Jupiter on the satellite's tidal bulges. If Europa's orbit were circular, or the satellite were comprised of a frictionless fluid without tidal dissipation, this torque would average to zero. However, Europa has a small forced eccentricity e approximately 0.01 , generated by its dynamical interaction with Io and Ganymede, which should cause the equilibrium spin rate of the satellite to be slightly faster than synchronous. Recent gravity data suggest that there may be a permanent asymmetry in Europa's interior mass distribution which is large enough to offset the tidal torque; hence, if non-synchronous rotation is observed, the surface is probably decoupled from the interior by a subsurface layer of liquid or ductile ice. Non-synchronous rotation was invoked to explain Europa's global system of lineaments and an equatorial region of rifting seen in Voyager images. Here we report an analysis of the orientation and distribution of these surface features, based on initial observations made by the Galileo spacecraft. We find evidence that Europa spins faster than the synchronous rate (or did so in the past), consistent with the possibility of a global subsurface ocean. 相似文献

To examine the effects of the number of stimuli presented when the visual-preference technique is used to measure attention in infancy, 2- and 4-month-old infants were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 experimental conditions. In the first condition, infants were shown 3 different checkerboards using the single-stimulus visual-preference methodology; in the second condition, 4 checkerboards; and in the third condition, 5 checkerboards. Infants in both the 3- and 4-pattern conditions were able to order the patterns as predicted by scaling theory. However, there was a significant decrease in the number of infants in the 5-pattern condition who could do so. Increased reporting of disease clusters is stretching health department resources while failing to uncover many significant environmental hazards. By reviewing the methodology by which health departments respond to such reports, we argue that there is a strong bias against investigating the most hazardous situations. Failure to find serious hazards is more a reflection of the methodology used than an assessment of the existence of environmental problems. The biases arise from the selection of situations that dictate full in-house consideration, the selection of the methodology used to evaluate reported or registry-based data, and the interpretation given to anomalous observations. A color space defined by the fundamental spectral sensitivity functions of the human visual system is used to assist in the design of computer graphics displays for color-deficient users. The functions are derived in terms of the CIE standard observer color-matching functions. The Farnsworth-Munsell 100-hue test, a widely used color vision test administered using physical color samples, is then implemented on a digitally controlled color television monitor. The flexibility of this computer graphics medium is then used to extend the Farnsworth-Munsell test in a way that improves the specificity of the diagnoses rendered by the test. The issue of how the world appears to color-deficient observers is addressed, and a full-color image is modified to represent a color-defective view of the scene. On the basis of self-regulatory perseveration theory, we hypothesized that the negative memory bias commonly found among depressed people is mediated by excess levels of self-focused attention and thus can be reduced by preventing depressed people from focusing on themselves. In Experiment 1, nondepressed and subclinically depressed college students were induced to either focus on themselves or externally and then to recall 10 events that had happened to themselves during the previous 2 weeks. Consistent with our hypotheses, events recalled by depressed Ss were more negative than events recalled by nondepressed Ss under conditions of self-focus but not under conditions of external focus. We conducted Experiment 2 to determine whether this effect was specific to self-referent events or generalizable to events that happened to other people. Experiment 2's findings replicated the previous findings for self-referent events but showed a different pattern for recall of events that happened to others, suggesting that self-focus reduces the negative memory bias among depressed individuals by deactivating their self-schemas. Oxidation of catechol estrogens (CE) leads to the reactive electrophilic CE quinones. Reaction of CE-3,4-quinones with DNA has been implicated in tumor initiation. One pathway to prevent this reaction is conjugation of CE quinones with glutathione (GSH). Four CE, 4-hydroxy estrone (4-OHE1), 4-hydroxyestradiol (4-OHE2), 2-OHE1, and 2-OHE2, were conjugated with GSH after oxidation catalyzed by horseradish peroxidase (HRP), lactoperoxidase (LP), or rat liver microsomal cytochrome P450. This reaction is a free-radical chain autoxidation that produces very high yields of products. Six mono-GSH conjugates, 4-OHE1(E2)-2-SG, 2-OHE1(E2)-1-SG, and 2-OHE1(E2)-4-SG, and four di-GSH conjugates, 4-OHE1(E2)-1,2-bisSG and 2-OHE1(E2)-1,4-bisSG, were identified and quantified. These di-GSH conjugates were also obtained quantitatively from oxidation of mono-GSH conjugates by the same enzymes. HRP and LP gave very similar product profiles. Phenobarbital- and 3-methylcholanthrene-induced microsomes with either NADPH or cumene hydroperoxide as cofactor oxidized 4-OHE2 to form similar amounts of GSH conjugates. Enzymatic oxidation of 2-OHE1(E2) in the presence of GSH produced more 2-OHE1(E2)-4-SG than the 1-isomer. This contrasts with the direct reaction of E1(E2)-2,3-Q and GSH, in which the 1-isomer is formed more abundantly than the 4-isomer (Cao, K., Devanesan, P. D., Ramanathan, R., Gross, M. L., Rogan, E. G., and Cavalieri, E. L. (1998) Chem. Res. Toxicol. 11, 909-916). Competitive enzymatic oxidation of equimolar 4-OHE2 and 2-OHE2 in the presence of an equimolar amount of GSH yielded more 2-OHE2 conjugates than 4-OHE2 conjugates, despite E2-3,4-Q being more reactive with GSH than E2-2,3-Q. These results suggest that 2-OHE2 is a better substrate than 4-OHE2 in the catalytic oxidation to quinones, despite the greater reactivity of E2-3,4-Q, compared to E2-2,3-Q, with GSH. 相似文献
