This paper studies flow characteristics and their effect on local mass transfer rate to a flat plate electrode in a FM01-LC electrochemical reactor. 3D reactor simulations under limiting current and turbulent flow conditions were performed using potassium ferro-ferricyanide electrochemical system with sodium sulfate as supporting electrolyte. The model consists of mass-transport equations coupled to hydrodynamic solution obtained from Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations using standard k? turbulence model, where the average velocity field, the turbulence level given by the eddy kinetic energy and the turbulent viscosity of the hydrodynamic calculation were used to evaluate the convection, turbulent diffusion and the concentration wall function. The turbulent mass diffusivity was evaluated by Kays–Crawford equation using heat and mass transfer analogies, while wall functions, for mass transport, were adapted from Launder–Spalding equations. Simulation results describe main flow properties, concentration profiles throughout the entire volume of the reactor and local diffusion flux over the electrode. Overall mass transfer coefficients estimated by simulation, without fitting parameters, agree closely with experimental coefficients determined from limiting current measurements (1.85% average error) for Re between 187 and 1407.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Efficient conversion of glucose/xylose mixtures from lignocellulose is necessary for commercially viable ethanol production. Oxygen and carbon sources are of paramount importance for ethanol yield. The aim of this work was to evaluate different glucose/xylose mixtures for ethanol production using S. cerevisiae ITV‐01 (wild type yeast) and P. stipitis NRRL Y‐7124 and the effect of supplying oxygen in separate and co‐culture processes. RESULTS: The complete conversion of a glucose/xylose mixture (75/30 g L?1) was obtained using P. stipitis NRRL Y‐7124 under aerobic conditions (0.6 vvm), the highest yield production being Yp/s = 0.46 g g?1, volumetric ethanol productivity Qpmax = 0.24 g L?1 h?1 and maximum ethanol concentration Pmax = 34.5 g L?1. In the co‐culture process and under aerobic conditions, incomplete conversion of glucose/xylose mixture was observed (20.4% residual xylose), with a maximum ethanol production of 30.3 g L?1, ethanol yield of 0.4 g g?1 and Qpmax = 1.26 g L?1 h?1. CONCLUSIONS: The oxygen present in the glucose/xylose mixture promotes complete sugar consumption by P. stipitis NRRL Y‐7124 resulting in ethanol production. However, in co‐culture with S. cerevisiae ITV‐01 under aerobic conditions, incomplete fermentation occurs that could be caused by oxygen limitation and ethanol inhibition by P. stipitis NRRL Y‐7124; nevertheless the volumetric ethanol productivity increases fivefold compared with separate culture. Historically, cell-signaling pathways have been studied as the compilation of isolated elements into a unique cascade that transmits extracellular stimuli to the tumor cell nucleus. Today, growing evidence supports the fact that intracellular drivers of tumor progression do not flow in a single linear pathway, but disseminate into multiple intracellular pathways. An improved understanding of the complexity of cancer depends on the elucidation of the underlying regulatory networks at the cellular and intercellular levels and in their temporal dimension. The high complexity of the intracellular cascades causes the complete inhibition of the growth of one tumor cell to be very unlikely, except in cases in which the so-called “oncogene addiction” is known to be a clear trigger for tumor catastrophe, such as in the case of gastrointestinal stromal tumors or chronic myeloid leukemia. In other words, the separation and isolation of the driver from the passengers is required to improve accuracy in cancer treatment. This review will summarize the signaling pathway crossroads that govern renal cell carcinoma proliferation and the emerging understanding of how these pathways facilitate tumor escape. We outline the available evidence supporting the putative links between different signaling pathways and how they may influence tumor proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, angiogenesis, metabolism and invasiveness. The conclusion is that tumor cells may generate their own crossroads/crosstalk among signaling pathways, thereby reducing their dependence on stimulation of their physiologic pathways.  相似文献

Monitoring of drilling for burr detection using spindle torque   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
This work proposes and evaluates a monitoring method, based on internal signals from spindle torque, to detect non-desired burr formation during drilling operations. Five features of this signal showed to be related to burr height. The selected features were sensitive to the exit burr while comparatively insensitive to changes in process parameters. The experiments were performed in aeronautics aluminium, Al 7075-T6, under dry high speed conditions. A thresholding algorithm has been developed to distinguish if burr height is below or above a previously established onset. The predictability of the developed algorithm is above 92% for the tested range of process parameters. An appropriate implementation of this monitoring system can be used as an effective quality control of drilling operations.  相似文献

This work presents the numerical simulation of a laboratory reactor with rotating cylinder electrode (RCE) and a six-plate counter electrode that is used in studies on heavy metal recovery. The rate of electrode rotation and the potential applied are of such magnitude that the electrochemical reactor works in conditions of mass transport control under turbulent flow to obtain high recovery rates and formation of dendritic metal deposits. For hydrodynamics, the Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations were solved using the standard kε turbulence model, as well as wall functions based on the universal velocity distribution in the near-wall region. Results of 3-D simulations of the velocity field show clearly the formation of the turbulence Taylor vortex flow. For mass transfer, convection–diffusion equation was solved using the Kays–Crawford model for turbulent Schmidt number and Launder–Spalding wall functions adapted for mass transfer. Kinetics of copper recovery from aqueous solutions containing 0.019 M CuSO4 and 1 M H2SO4, in the range of rotation speed of 400–1100 rpm, was adequately fit (error <8%) during the electrolysis time to achieve a final recovery of 85% for potentiostatic and 60% for galvanostatic experiments. The fitting parameter of the concentration wall function used in all experiments was A=2.9.  相似文献

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML), the most common type of leukemia in older adults, is a heterogeneous disease that originates from the clonal expansion of undifferentiated hematopoietic progenitor cells. These cells present a remarkable variety of genes and proteins with altered expression and function. Despite significant advances in understanding the molecular panorama of AML and the development of therapies that target mutations, survival has not improved significantly, and the therapy standard is still based on highly toxic chemotherapy, which includes cytarabine (Ara-C) and allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation. Approximately 60% of AML patients respond favorably to these treatments and go into complete remission; however, most eventually relapse, develop refractory disease or chemoresistance, and do not survive for more than five years. Therefore, drug resistance that initially occurs in leukemic cells (primary resistance) or that develops during or after treatment (acquired resistance) has become the main obstacle to AML treatment. In this work, the main molecules responsible for generating chemoresistance to Ara-C in AML are discussed, as well as some of the newer strategies to overcome it, such as the inclusion of molecules that can induce synergistic cytotoxicity with Ara-C (MNKI-8e, emodin, metformin and niclosamide), subtoxic concentrations of chemotherapy (PD0332991), and potently antineoplastic treatments that do not damage nonmalignant cells (heteronemin or hydroxyurea + azidothymidine).  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Aqueous extracts of 48 herbal plants were obtained via alternative extraction protocols, and were assayed for their capacity to protect deoxyribose and DNA itself from degradation (or, conversely, for their capacity to promote DNA degradation), using electrophoresis as analytical tool. RESULTS: For a given (constant) volume of extract, deoxyribose protection ranged from 14.13 ± 1.35% (mean ± SD) inhibition by dwarf mallow powder infusion, up to 106.51 ± 15.93% inhibition by avocado powder infusion. DNA protection was tested at two extract concentrations, and was slightly greater at the higher concentration. Pro‐oxidant effects were essentially absent. CONCLUSION: The anti‐oxidative roles of plants upon deoxyribose and DNA displayed by our experimental results were rather promising with regards to practical applications of those plants, viz. as ingredients in the formulation of nutraceutical beverages and/or foods.
