Therapeutic problems in postoperative keratopathy (author's transl)

Keratopathy following intraocular surgery is usually a neglegible transitory lesion which does not require special treatment. An intractible bullous keratopathy frequently develops in cases of endothelial dystrophy. Other causative factors leading to postoperative keratopathy are excessive operative traumatisation of the cornea, vitreocorneal adhesions, athalamia, detachment of Descemet's membrane or epithelial down-growth. For conservative treatment of postoperative keratopathies topical application of corticosteroids, acetylcholine, vitamine-A-ointments, hyperosmotic agents, soft contact lenses, and systemic application of carboanhydrase inhibitors can be used. According to our experience even in cases of severe keratopathy a significant improvement of visual acuity and discomfort may be achieved by long lasting and intensive conservative treatment. Only in rare cases one has to resort to glueing a contact lens on the cornea (Dohlman) or to perform a keratoplasty using Stocker's technique.     

Nonlactating-cow therapy with a formulation of penicillin and novobiocin: therapeutic and prophylactic effects

An experimental product incorporating 500,000 IU of procaine penicillin G and 600 mg of sodium novobiocin in 2% aluminum monostearate-peanut oil gel (10-ml dose) was infused after the final milk-out at end of lactation into all 4 mammary quarters of 56 cows that were infected in at least 1 quarter. The therapeutic and prophylactic efficacies were published in the companion report. Infusion of the product in all quarters of 5 lactating cows resulted in only slight irritation. Penicillin was eliminated by the 11th milking and novobiocin by the 5th. After infusion in the dry udder, the antibiotics were no longer detectable in serous secretion after 14 days and failed to appear in urine at the earliest (7-day) sampling after administration. Neither antibiotic was detectable in the 1st postpartum milking after nonlactating periods as short as 3 weeks.     

Determination of water in aluminum chlorohydrate and effervescent tablets by Karl Fischer Analysis

A procedure was developed for the quantitative determination of loosely bound water in aluminum chlorohydrate and the water content in denture cleanser effervescent tablets. The basic method involves extracting the water from the sample into dioxane followed by titration of the dioxane in methanol with Karl Fischer Reagent. Matrix Ingredients did not interfere.     

The results of treatment for complete prolapse of the rectum in the adult patient

A method of anterior fixation of the bowel in complete prolapse of the rectum is described. The treatment is based on the concept that abdominal pressure should be directed on the bowel against the pubis rather than directly onto the perineum. The results have been universally successful, without mortality and with excellent functional results.     

Clonidine suppresses the opioid abstinence syndrome without clonidine-withdrawal symptoms: a blind inpatient study

Nine hospitalized opioid-addicted patients were blindly given clonidine within 36 hours of the abrupt and blind discontinuation of methadone. All nine patients were successfully withdrawn from methadone and were asymptomatic upon discharge. Clonidine-treated patients had significantly fewer symptoms than a comparable group of opioid addicts abruptly withdrawn from methadone. No exacerbation of symptomatology developed after the cessation of clonidine. The clinical implications of clonidine's suppression of opioid withdrawal and the alpha-2 adrenergic mediation of the abstinence syndrome are discussed.
