Amphiphilic peptides can be designed to form ordered supramolecular structures at hydrophilic-hydrophobic interfaces. These systems rely on the ability of peptides to fold into certain secondary structures at interfaces. This review focuses on the design of amphiphilic β-sheet peptide assemblies in monolayers at interfaces, and their relevance to inducing mineralization and interactions with specific ions. In addition, the review discusses recent studies demonstrating the applicability of designed amphiphilic β-sheet peptides to detection of specific small molecules and to elucidating intermolecular interactions relevant to drug delivery and enzyme catalysis systems. 相似文献
The North Atlantic Refinery has three 5400-hp slow-speed induction motors driving reciprocating compressors for a Hydrogen plant. All motors were rewound on-site over the period of 1998-2002, using magnetic wedges as per the original design, and the motor protection was upgraded to microprocessor-type relays. In summer 2003, during routine maintenance, it was noted that these motors suffered substantial loss of slot magnetic wedges and had to be scheduled for rewedging over 2004-2006. This paper presents failure analysis, field measurements covering heat-run test results, and motor-performance and vibration analysis before and after motor rewedging work. This paper reviews the key factors for using magnetic versus nonmagnetic wedges in these applications and techniques available to predict loss of wedges. The use of a microprocessor relay for slow-speed induction motor protection is discussed, particularly, the thermal protection feature to address the cyclic-load pattern caused by the reciprocating compressor 相似文献
This paper describes work undertaken as part of a three-stranded project. The main deliverable will be a suite of software tools, classes and components, as well as teaching resources and methodologies to facilitate the production of intelligent multimedia tutoring systems.
The three strands of this project explore differing aspects of multimedia, and while they stand as separate pieces of work in their own right, they also form the building blocks of the final deliverable, which is an intelligent tutoring system. Intermediate outcomes include a multimedia shell and the Manley Group Demonstrator.
This paper focuses on the design and development of the “true multimedia” demonstrator that has now reached the stage of being a fairly mature prototype. It is used commercially by a communications company to illustrate the varying levels of sophistication which can be achieved in presentation systems and provides an exemplar demonstrating the varying degrees of functionality possible using current technology. The main requirement in the design and implementation has been usability both for end users and content developers.
Real-time control of the multimedia devices is achieved using sophisticated software which is tightly integrated with dedicated control hardware. The software can be used to produce canned presentations or highly interactive systems.
The system is installed in a dedicated presentation suite, thus allowing the true nature of multimedia to be demonstrated. It is scaleable in that it can be used to produce stand-alone portable solutions, highly interactive touch-screen controlled applications or complete multi-device high end presentations. This is achieved using the appropriate combination of software tools and hardware for a specific application.
γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) neurons in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) provide innervation to cortical and subcortical regions of the brain. To solidify the importance of these VTA GABA neurons in behavioral function, we employed the neurotoxin dermorphin-saporin (DS) to selectively lesion VTA GABA neurons prior to assessing spontaneous motor activity. Rats were bilaterally microinfused with DS (1.0 or 2.0 pmol/200 nl/side) or blank-saporin control (BS, 200 nl/side) into the VTA. Seven days later, DS-treated rats exhibited significantly elevated motility in comparison with BS-treated rats; this elevated motility normalized by Day 14 following pretreatment with 1.0 pmol of DS but was sustained on Day 14 after pretreatment with 2.0 pmol of DS. A selective loss of VTA GABA neurons on Day 14 was demonstrated through reduced expression of mRNA for glutamic acid decarboxylase-67 and μ-opioid receptor, but not tyrosine hydroxylase (a dopamine neuron marker), in the VTA. Thus, a dose- and time-related selective loss of VTA GABA neurons was accomplished using this novel neurotoxin. This loss of GABA VTA neurons was associated with hypermotility, further supporting their important regulatory role in the generation of behavior. We used 268 cloud-free Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images from 2003 and 2005-2007 to study the seasonal evolution of supra-glacial lakes in three different regions of the Greenland Ice Sheet. Lake area estimates were obtained by developing an automated classification method for their identification based on 250 m resolution MODIS surface reflectance observations. Widespread supra-glacial lake formation and drainage is observed across the ice sheet, with a 2-3 week delay in the evolution of total supra-glacial lake area in the northern areas compared to the south-west. The onset of lake growth varies by up to one month inter-annually, and lakes form and drain at progressively higher altitudes during the melt season. A positive correlation was found between the annual peak in total lake area and modelled annual runoff. High runoff and lake extent years are generally characterised by low accumulation and high melt season temperatures, and vice versa. Our results indicate that, in a future warmer climate [Meehl, G. Social Network Sites (SNSs) rely exclusively on user-generated content to offer engaging and rewarding experience to its members. As a result, stimulating user communication and self-disclosure is vital for the sustainability of SNSs. However, considering that the SNS users are increasingly culturally diverse, motivating this audience to self-disclose requires understanding of their cultural intricacies. Yet existing research offers only limited insights into the role of culture behind the motivation of SNS users to self-disclose. Building on the privacy calculus framework, this study explores the role of two cultural dimensions ?C individualism and uncertainty avoidance ?C in self-disclosure decisions of SNS users. Survey responses of US and German Facebook members are used as the basis for our analysis. Structural equation modeling and multi-group analysis results reveal the distinct role of culture in the cognitive patterns of SNS users. The authors find that trusting beliefs play a key role in the self-disclosure decisions of users from individualistic cultures. At the same time, uncertainty avoidance determines the impact of privacy concerns. This paper contributes to the theory by rejecting the universal nature of privacy calculus processes. The findings provide for an array of managerial implications for SNS providers as they strive to encourage content creation and sharing by their heterogeneous members. 相似文献
The recent emergence of the discrete fractional Fourier transform has spurred research activity aiming at generating Hermite–Gaussian-like (HGL) orthonormal eigenvectors of the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) matrix F. By exploiting the unitarity of matrix F – resulting in the orthogonality of its eigenspaces pertaining to the distinct eigenvalues – the problem decouples into finding orthonormal eigenvectors for each eigenspace separately. A Direct Sequential Evaluation by constrained Optimization Algorithm (DSEOA) is contributed for the generation of optimal orthonormal eigenvectors for each eigenspace separately. This technique is direct in the sense that it does not require the generation of initial orthonormal eigenvectors as a prerequisite for obtaining the final optimal ones. The resulting eigenvectors are optimal in the sense of being as close as possible to samples of the Hermite–Gaussian functions. The technique is found to be numerically robust because total pivoting is allowed in performing the QR matrix decomposition step. The DSEOA is proved to be theoretically equivalent to each of the Gram–Schmidt algorithm (GSA) and the sequential orthogonal Procrustes algorithm (SOPA). However the three techniques are algorithmically quite distinct. An extensive comparative simulation study shows that the DSEOA is by far the most numerically robust technique among all sequential algorithms thus paying off for its relatively long computation time. 相似文献
