BACKGROUND: Iodine-deficiency disorders are a major public health problem in Ethiopia. In conjunction with implementing control programs, baseline information needs to be established. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the distribution and degree of severity of iodine-deficiency disorders in terms of goiter prevalence, urinary iodine excretion (UIE) levels, and proportion of households with iodated salt in Ethiopia. METHODS: A nationwide, community-based, cross-sectional study was conducted from February to May 2005 among 10,965 children aged 6 to 12 years. A multistage, proportional-to-population-size sampling method was used. Goiters were classified by the method recommended by the World Health Organization/UNICEF/International Council for the Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders (WHO/UNICEF/ICCIDD), in which the thyroid gland is graded as 0 (normal), 1 (palpable goiter), or 2 (visible goiter); urinary iodine was determined by the wet digestion method; and salt samples were analyzed by a rapid test kit. RESULTS: The national total goiter weighted prevalence rate among children aged 6 to 12 years was 39.9% (95% confidence interval, 38.6% to 41.2%), representing more than 4 million children. The median UIE was 2.45 microg/ dL; 45.8% of children had UIE values of 2 microg/dL or less, and 22.8% had UIE values of 2.01 to 5.0 pg/dL. Only 4.2% of the households had iodated salt. CONCLUSIONS: According to the WHO/UNICEF/ ICCIDD classification, both goiter prevalence and UIE levels indicate that the whole country appears to be severely affected by iodine deficiency. Furthermore, the virtual absence of iodated salt in the households shows that currently there is no salt iodization program in the country. Dietary sources of iodine in Ethiopia are not dependable, and hence a sustainable universal salt iodization program needs to be implemented without delay.  相似文献

Lutein is an oxygenated carotenoid (xanthophyll) found in dark green leafy vegetables. High intakes of lutein may lower the risk of age-related macular degeneration. Current understanding of human lutein metabolism as it might occur in vivo is incomplete. Therefore, we conducted a feasibility study where we dosed a normal adult woman with 14C-lutein (125 nmol, 36 nCi 14C), dissolved in olive oil (0.5 g/kg body weight) and mixed in a banana shake. Blood, urine, and feces collected before the dose was administered served to establish baseline values. There-after, blood was collected for 63 d following the dose, while feces and urine were collected for 2 wk post-dose. The 14C contents in plasma, urine, and feces were measured by accelerator MS. The 14C first appeared in plasma 1 h after dosing and reached its highest level,≈2.08% of dose/L plasma, at 14 h post-dose. The plasma pattern of 14C did not include a chylomicrons/VLDL (intestinal) peak like that when the same subject received 14C-β-carotene (a previous test), suggesting that lutein was handled differently from β-carotene by plasma lipoproteins. Lutein had an elimination half-life (t 1/2) of≈10 d. Forty-five percent of the dose of 14C was eliminated in feces and 10% in urine in the first 2 d after dosing. Quantifying human lutein metabolism is a fertile area for future research.  相似文献

As channel allocation schemes become more complex and computationally demanding in cellular radio networks, alternative computational models that provide the means for faster processing time are becoming the topic of research interest. These computational models include knowledge-based algorithms, neural networks, and stochastic search techniques. This paper is concerned with the application of a Hopfield (1982) neural network (HNN) to dynamic channel allocation (DCA) and extends previous work that reports the performance of HNN in terms of new call blocking probability. We further model and examine the effect on performance of traffic mobility and the consequent intercell call handoff, which, under increasing load, can force call terminations with an adverse impact on the quality of service (QoS). To maintain the overall QoS, it is important that forced call terminations be kept to a minimum. For an HNN-based DCA, we have therefore modified the underlying model by formulating a new energy function to account for the overall channel allocation optimization, not only for new calls but also for handoff channel allocation resulting from traffic mobility. That is, both new call blocking and handoff call blocking probabilities are applied as a joint performance estimator. We refer to the enhanced model as HNN-DCA++. We have also considered a variation of the original technique based on a simple handoff priority scheme, here referred to as HNN-DCA+. The two neural DCA schemes together with the original model are evaluated under traffic mobility and their performance compared in terms of new-call blocking and handoff-call dropping probabilities. Previously synthesized C36-dimer acids (DA) have been esterified (97 ± 0.2% conversion at 120 °C for 72 hours) with 2-ethylhexanol (2-EH) to produce a new class of C52-DA 2-EH esters that have potential application in biolubricant formulations such as base oils and additives. Investigation of physicochemical and lubricant properties showed the bio-based esters have good solubility in commercial base stocks such as polyalpha olefin (PAO-6) (>20 w/w) and high-oleic sunflower oil (HOSuO) (>20 w/w). The neat C52-DA 2-EH esters displayed a three- to eightfold higher kinematic viscosity and comparable viscosity index (VI = 134) as a commercial base stock, PAO-6 (VI =137). Both C52-DA 2-EH esters, whose parent C36-DA were synthesized with two different zeolite catalysts, were oxidatively stable above 176 °C. Blending C52-DA 2-EH esters in HOSuO improved the pour point (PP) of HOSuO from −18.8 to −21.0 °C at 1% w/w and the cloud point (CP) from −6.3 to −10.6 °C at 8% w/w of C52-DA 2-EH ester 1. A similar trend was observed for C52-DA 2-EH ester 2, indicating that the esters possess PP depressant (PPD) characteristics in HOSuO blends. Blending C52-DA 2-EH esters in PAO-6 increased the VI of PAO-6, which is an indication that the bio-based esters were acting as VI improvers (VII). It was concluded that C52-DA 2-EH esters can be employed commercially as bio-based base oils and as PPD and VII additives in lubricant formulations.  相似文献

The extent of honey-coating retention on the surface of sonicated peanuts was studied to evaluate the efficacy of sonication to improve adhesion of honey on peanuts. Samples (150 g each) were sonicated in 450 ml petroleum ether for 5, 10, and 15 min. Following sonication, 25 ml of honey was poured and stirred over the peanuts then roasted in an oven at 177 °C for 10 min. Honey adhesion was determined by measuring the weight of 50 g peanuts before and after coating. The effect of honey and sonication on oxidative stability was measured every 7 days by oxidative stability instrument. The results showed that the weight of honey coating was 7, 16, 19, 21, and 21 g on the control, dipped, 5-, 10-, and 15-min sonicated sample, respectively. Sonication improved adhesion of honey on peanuts by 64%, 68%, and 67% after 5, 10, and 15 min of sonication, respectively, relative to the control. Oxidative stability of dipped, 5-, 10-, and 15-min sonicated samples was improved by 22%, 36%, 46%, and 32%, respectively, in relative to the control. Therefore, removing lipids from peanut surface by high-power ultrasound improved adhesion of honey coating and the oxidative stability.  相似文献

The viscosity and elastohydrodynamic (EHD) film thickness properties of binary blends of castor oil with polyol esters were determined experimentally. Predicted blend viscosities were calculated from the viscosities of the pure blend components. Measured viscosity values were closer to the values predicted using the Lederer model than the Arrhenius model. EHD film thickness data were mostly in agreement with the predictions of the Hamrock–Dowson model. Observed deviations of EHD film thickness were attributed to boundary film formation and thermal effects. Calculated effective pressure–viscosity coefficients, α, displayed a complex relationship with blend viscosity. At 40°C, the addition of 10% polyol esters resulted in a 12–17% drop in α of castor oil. Higher concentrations of polyol esters resulted in an increase of α. Three phosphonate derivatives of methyl oleate (MeO) were chemically synthesized in a radical chain reaction and their physical and tribological properties investigated. The phosphonates differed from each other in the structure of the alkoxy groups attached to the phosphorous, which were as follows: methoxy, ethoxy, and n-butoxy. Phosphonylation eliminated the unsaturation in MeO and also introduced branching. The phosphonate oils had higher density and viscosity than MeO, which was attributed to the contribution of the heavier phosphorus atom in their structures, and to their higher molecular weights, respectively. The phosphonates also displayed improved oxidation stability and cold flow properties, which were attributed to the elimination of the double bond and the introduction of branching in their molecular structures, respectively. Tribological investigations were conducted using 4-Ball anti-wear (AW) and extreme pressure (EP) methods. Neat phosphonates displayed lower AW coefficients of friction and wear scar diameters than MeO. The improved AW results were attributed to the higher viscosity of the phosphonates, since the AW test is conducted in the mixed film regime. The phosphonates had no effect on EP weld point (WP) as neat oils or as 5 % additives in petroleum-based oils. In soy base oil, 5 % phosphonate additives displayed smaller improvement in WP than zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate (ZDDP). It is proposed that this lack of EP characteristics could be due to the high dissociation energy of C–P bonds in the phosphonates, compared to, for example, S–P bonds in ZDDP.  相似文献

The wind energy potential at four different sites in Ethiopia – Addis Ababa (09:02N, 38:42E), Mekele (13:33N, 39:30E), Nazret (08:32N, 39:22E), and Debrezeit (8:44N, 39:02E) – has been investigated by compiling data from different sources and analyzing it using a software tool. The results relating to wind energy potential are given in terms of the monthly average wind speed, wind speed probability density function (PDF), wind speed cumulative density function (CDF), and wind speed duration curve (DC) for all four selected sites. In brief, for measurements taken at a height of 10 m, the results show that for three of the four locations the wind energy potential is reasonable, with average wind speeds of approximately 4 m/s. For the fourth site, the mean wind speed is less than 3 m/s. This study is the first stage in a longer project and will be followed by an analysis of solar energy potential and finally the design of a hybrid standalone electric energy supply system that includes a wind turbine, PV, diesel generator and battery.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The food industry has been facing the challenge of developing low‐fat and low‐calorie food products due to rising health awareness of consumers. To meet this consumer demand, an oat β‐glucan‐rich hydrocolloid (C‐trim30) was evaluated as a cocoa butter substitute in chocolates. The effects of C‐trim30 on the rheological, tribological, and textural properties of chocolates were investigated. RESULTS: The viscosity of molten chocolates increased with increasing levels of C‐trim30. Flow behaviors analyzed using the Casson model showed that the Casson viscosity and yield stress increased with increasing concentration of C‐trim30 in the chocolate. Tribological tests on a ball‐on‐flat tribometer showed a reduction in boundary coefficients of friction, with increasing C‐trim30. In addition, hardness of chocolates showed that replacement of cocoa butter with C‐trim30 produced chocolates with softer texture. CONCLUSIONS: The cocoa butter replacement with C‐trim30 up to 10% produced soft chocolates with improved boundary lubrication properties. Also, the chocolate prepared by replacing the cocoa butter with C‐trim30 resulted in a product with a lower caloric value and increased health benefits from the oat β‐glucan.
