High-temperature nanoindentation: New developments and ongoing challenges

High-temperature or elevated-temperature nanoindentation testing presents an additional capability in nanoindentation techniques, which have demonstrated tremendous potential in the study of nanoscale mechanical behavior. However, to be able to conduct nanoindentation under relevant service temperatures and to gain a better understanding of the fundamental materials physics, high-temperature nanoindentation must overcome such technical issues as heat management, thermal drift, and sample oxidation. This article presents the current state and history of high-temperature nanoindentation with a focus on recent research topics and available testing systems.

A Personal Account of Developments in Enthalpy Relaxation: A Tribute to C. T. Moynihan

The contributions of Connie Moynihan to the science of enthalpy relaxation are reviewed. The author's professional involvement with Moynihan's science is outlined, and the origins of a number of seminal developments are described. Developments of Moynihan's many and varied seminal contributions are described.     

Microstructure Development in Mullite-Cordierite Ceramics

The evolution of the microstructure in mullite-cordierite bodies containing 36 wt% cordierite has been studied in samples fired at 1490°C for varying times. This material reaches its final density very quickly once the cordierite becomes molten. However, densification, which is not accompanied by any significant coarsening of the mullite phase, appears almost entirely to result from particle–particle rearrangement. Consequently, the ultimate density of these materials appears to be limited by the inability of molten cordierite to penetrate all mullite-mullite grain boundaries.     

Measuring countertransference and attitude in therapeutic relationships.

Significant results were obtained establishing a relationship between the therapist's attitude of liking or disliking for his or her clients and countertransference. If strong feelings of liking are present, clients are viewed as having personalities closer to the therapist's personality than are the client's measured personalities. When strong feelings of disliking are operative, the therapist's distortion of the client's measured personality runs in the opposite direction and is viewed as more dissimilar from the therapist's personality than it is measured to be. Systemic treatment of Darier's disease with an oral retinoic acid derivative Ro 10-9359 Tigason

In an open trial, seven patients with Darier's disease took part in a three month study to evaluate the effect of a new oral synthetic retinoid. Ro 10-9359 (Tigason). The usual dose was 50 mg daily. At two-week intervals, lesions were graded with respect to their nature, erythema, keratosis, and percent of body surface area involved. All but one patient, were markedly improved on the drug, and showed a marked preference for the retinoid above other treatments. No patients withdrew because of side-effects but all suffered dry lips. Other side-effects were mild or moderate and well tolerated. It is concluded that Tigason is effective in Darier's disease.
