A technique for fabricating many different wavelength lasers on the same wafer has been developed. High energy ion implantation was used to selectively blue shift the emission wavelength of an InP-based quantum well laser structure. This structure was then processed into fully functional broad-area lasers whose current threshold was unaffected by the implantation process, indicating extremely high material quality after bandgap-shifting. This process has the potential for the integration of not only different wavelength lasers, but also other devices, such as waveguides, detectors, modulators, etc., on a single wafer.  相似文献

We present two related methods of construction for de Bruijn (1946) sequences, both based on interleaving “smaller” de Bruijn sequences. Sequences obtained using these construction methods have the advantage that they can be “decoded” very efficiently, i.e., the position within the sequence of any particular “window” can be found very simply. Abstract: This article combines the neighborhood effects and spatial mismatch frameworks into a single model explaining how geographic factors contribute to unemployment. Using National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (1979) data, I estimate a two‐step model that separately models the effects of segregation and spatial mismatch. The first model predicts educational attainment as a function of exposure to residential segregation as a youth. The second model predicts unemployment probability as an adult as a function of educational attainment and spatial mismatch. The empirical results show that segregation does have discernable effects on educational attainment for blacks, but not for whites. I also find that spatial mismatch affects unemployment probability for blacks, but such an effect is hardly present for whites. A partial equilibrium analysis using predictions from the models shows that large changes in either segregation levels or the central city/suburban distribution of the black population would yield only moderate decreases in unemployment probability for the black population overall. Yet despite small predicted effects, these results should be viewed with caution because the general equilibrium effects of a large scale movement of blacks and whites across metropolitan space are largely impossible to predict with current data.  相似文献

Immunocytochemistry and retrograde labeling were used to define the thalamic projections of calbindin- and parvalbumin-containing cells in superficial layers of the rat's superior colliculus (SC). Quantitative analysis revealed that 90.8 +/- 2.2% (mean +/- standard deviation) of the calbindin-immunoreactive neurons in the stratum griseum superficiale (SGS) projected to the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (LGNd) and that 91.3 +/- 4.3% of calbindin-immunoreactive neurons in the stratum opticum (SO) projected to the lateral posterior nucleus (LP). In contrast, only 17.3 +/- 2.5% of parvalbumin-immunoreactive neurons in the SGS were found to project to the LGNd and 16.5 +/- 3.1% of the parvalbumin-immunoreactive SO cells were retrogradely labeled after LP injections. Few of the parvalbumin-immunoreactive neurons in either the SGS (7.2 +/- 2.5%) or the SO (9.2 +/- 2.5%) were GABA positive. The retrograde-labeling results suggest that parvalbumin-immunoreactive neurons in the rat's SO and SGS may either be primarily interneurons or have descending projections, while calbindin-containing cells are primarily thalamic projection neurons. These results are consistent with data from other rodents, but almost exactly the opposite of data that have been reported for the cat for these same populations of SC projection neurons. Such interspecies differences raise questions regarding the functional importance of expressing one calcium-binding protein versus another in a specific neuronal population.  相似文献

PURPOSE: Corticosteroids are known to cause cataracts, but the effects of other medications on the lens are unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between cataracts and a range of medications, including allopurinol, aspirin, chloroquine, diuretics, phenothiazines, and simvastatin. DESIGN: Population-based cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS: 3654 individuals 49 to 97 years of age (response rate, 82%) from an urban community near Sydney, Australia, were included. TESTING: Lens photography. PRIMARY OUTCOME MEASURE: Lens photographs were graded for the presence and severity of cortical, nuclear, and posterior subcapsular cataract. RESULTS: After adjusting for numerous potential confounders in ordinal regression models, use of phenothiazines was associated with nuclear cataract (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 2.18; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01-4.74); long-term aspirin users (> or = 10 years) had higher prevalence of posterior subcapsular cataract than did nonusers and short-term users (test for trend, P = 0.02); and the antimalarial drug mepacrine was associated with posterior subcapsular cataract (adjusted OR, 3.56; 95% CI, 1.56-8.13). There was a suggestion that use of chloroquine-like drugs for more than 1 year (test for trend, P = 0.12) might also be associated with posterior subcapsular cataract. Antihypertensive medications, cholesterol-lowering drugs, and allopurinol were not associated with any type of cataract. Potassium-sparing diuretics were the only diuretic to show any evidence of an association with cataract (test for trend for posterior subcapsular cataract, P = 0.14). Amiodarone was associated with cortical cataract (age- and gender-adjusted OR, 3.84; 95% CI, 1.01-14.81), but there were too few users to do analyses adjusted for multiple confounders. CONCLUSIONS: Most drugs commonly used in the community do not appear to be associated with cataract. The findings of this study do not support the hypothesis that aspirin protects against cataract.  相似文献

Treatment with cytotoxic chemotherapy and radiotherapy is associated with significant gonadal damage in men and women. Alkylating agents such as cyclophosphamide and procarbazine are the most common agents implicated. The vast majority of men receiving procarbazine-containing regimens for the treatment of lymphomas become permanently infertile. Cisplatin-based chemotherapy for testicular cancer results in temporary azoospermia in most men, with a recovery of spermatogenesis in about 50% after 2 years and in 80% after 5 years. There is also evidence of Leydig cell impairment in a proportion of these men, although the clinical significance of this is not clear. The germinal epithelium is very sensitive to radiation-induced damage, with changes to spermatogonia occurring following as little as 0.1 Gy and permanent infertility after fractionated doses of 2 Gy and above. Cytotoxic-induced premature ovarian failure is age- and drug-dependent and ensues in approximately half of women treated with procarbazine-containing chemotherapy for lymphomas. High-dose chemotherapy, total body irradiation, and irradiation at an ovarian dose above 6 Gy usually result in permanent ovarian failure. The course of ovarian function after chemotherapy is variable, and late recovery occurs in some patients. Several methods of preserving gonadal function during potentially sterilizing treatment have been considered. Currently, sperm banking remains the only proven method in men, although hormonal manipulation to enhance the recovery of spermatogenesis and cryopreservation of testicular germ cells are possibilities for the future. Transposition of the ovaries to allow better shielding during radiotherapy is of use in some women, and the prospect of cryopreservation and reimplantation of ovarian tissue is promising.  相似文献

The use of PCR to amplify a specific virA gene fragment serves as a highly specific and sensitive method to detect virulent bacteria of the genus Shigella and enteroinvasive Escherichia coli. Amplification of a 215-bp DNA band was obtained by using isolated genomic DNA of Shigella, individual cells of Shigella dysenteriae, and mayonnaise contaminated with S. dysenteriae. Moreover, a multiplex PCR with specific (virA) and bacterium-restricted (16S ribosomal DNA) primers generated an amplification product of approximately 755 bp for all bacteria tested and an additional 215-bp product for Shigella and enteroinvasive E. coli.  相似文献
