A review of products evolved from heated coal,wood and PVC

A review is presented of the gaseous combustion and pyrolysis products evolved from coal, wood and PVC. Information has been collated on the range of products evolved, the temperatures of evolution and the effect of different ambient conditions (e.g. oxidizing of inert conditions). The data for coal have been subdivided into those from which rates of gas evolution have been or can be derived and those from which this is not possible. Probable decomposition routes for PVC and for wood are discussed. Although all three materials have been widely studied, the correlation between the work of different authors in not always good. The data obtained are dependent on the form of the experiment, and there are gaps in the information available, especially information on the rates of evolution of products of products as a function of temperature.     

How the rich (and happy) get richer (and happier): Relationship of core self-evaluations to trajectories in attaining work success.

In this study, the authors linked core self-evaluations to job and work success. Utilizing a dynamic design from participants in the National Longitudinal Surveys of Youth (NLSY79), core self-evaluations were hypothesized to predict individuals' intercepts (starting levels of success), and their growth trajectories (slope of individuals' success over time) with respect to job satisfaction, pay, and occupational status. Results indicated that higher core self-evaluations were associated with both higher initial levels of work success and steeper work success trajectories. Education and health problems that interfere with work mediated a portion of the hypothesized relationships, suggesting that individuals with high core self-evaluations have more ascendant jobs and careers, in part, because they are more apt to pursue further education and maintain better health. X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein and active caspase-3 expression patterns in antral follicles in the sheep ovary

X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein (XIAP) interacts with caspases to inhibit their activity, thereby providing a potential mechanism for regulation of granulosa cell apoptosis occurring during follicular atresia. The aim of this study was to determine the presence and localization of XIAP mRNA and protein content in the sheep ovary and compare these expression patterns with active caspase-3 protein in the same antral follicles. Romney ewe estrous cycles (n=25) were synchronized with 2-3 Estrumate injections and ovarian tissue collected during the luteal and follicular phases of the cycle. The presence of XIAP mRNA was confirmed by RT-PCR using laser capture microdissected ovarian cell samples. XIAP mRNA was subsequently localized by in situ hybridization histochemistry and XIAP and active caspase-3 protein visualized by immunohistochemistry. In antral follicles extensive XIAP localization was evident in both granulosa and thecal cells. In contrast, mRNA expression was widespread in granulosa cells and only detected in thecal tissue from a small proportion of antral follicles. Active caspase-3 and XIAP comparative expression analysis showed positive XIAP mRNA expression in all late luteal phase (day 14) follicles, despite varying levels of active caspase-3 protein. A proportion of follicular phase (days 15 and 16) follicles, however, showed an inverse expression relationship at the protein and mRNA levels in both granulosa and thecal tissue, as did XIAP protein in day 14 follicles. These results suggest high XIAP may prevent activation of caspase-3, thereby regulating follicular atresia in antral follicles and could potentially be utilized as a marker of follicular health.     

An 80-Msample/s video switched-capacitor filter using a parallelbiquadratic structure

This paper describes a fifth-order, low-pass switched capacitor filter for video applications. It has a 4-MHz cutoff frequency and uses a parallel biquadratic structure with double sampling to achieve an 80-MHz input sampling rate in a 2-μm CMOS process. The prototype filter is fully differential, occupies an active area of 11 mm² , and dissipates 190 mW     

Synthesis,Pharmacological Evaluation,and Docking Studies of Novel Pyridazinone‐Based Cannabinoid Receptor Type 2 Ligands

In recent years, cannabinoid type 2 receptors (CB₂R) have emerged as promising therapeutic targets in a wide variety of diseases. Selective ligands of CB₂R are devoid of the psychoactive effects typically observed for CB₁R ligands. Based on our recent studies on a class of pyridazinone 4‐carboxamides, further structural modifications of the pyridazinone core were made to better investigate the structure–activity relationships for this promising scaffold with the aim to develop potent CB₂R ligands. In binding assays, two of the new synthesized compounds [6‐(3,4‐dichlorophenyl)‐2‐(4‐fluorobenzyl)‐cis‐N‐(4‐methylcyclohexyl)‐3‐oxo‐2,3‐dihydropyridazine‐4‐carboxamide ( 2 ) and 6‐(4‐chloro‐3‐methylphenyl)‐cis‐N‐(4‐methylcyclohexyl)‐3‐oxo‐2‐pentyl‐2,3‐dihydropyridazine‐4‐carboxamide ( 22 )] showed high CB₂R affinity, with K_i values of 2.1 and 1.6 nm , respectively. In addition, functional assays of these compounds and other new active related derivatives revealed their pharmacological profiles as CB₂R inverse agonists. Compound 22 displayed the highest CB₂R selectivity and potency, presenting a favorable in silico pharmacokinetic profile. Furthermore, a molecular modeling study revealed how 22 produces inverse agonism through blocking the movement of the toggle‐switch residue, W6.48.     

Solid‐phase extraction of phenolic compounds with poly[metalloprotoporphyrin IX]

A highly insoluble metalloporphyrin polymeric material was used as sorbent for the solid‐phase extraction of phenolic compounds. Substantial quantities of phenols (40 to 60 mg/g polymer) were absorbed from aqueous solution comparing satisfactorily with other extraction methods. The polymeric phase presented similar K_SPE values for the hydrophobic compounds tested such as p‐chlorophenol, BPA, p‐nitrophenol, and a significant lower value for the more hydrophilic p‐aminophenol and cresol. Several metallic complexes of protoporphyrin IX (Co²⁺, Cu²⁺, Ni²⁺, Zn²⁺, and Fe³⁺) have been tested. The analytes were extracted with high recoveries at acid and neutral pH values, whereas at pH 10 low recoveries were obtained. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. An analog DFE for disk drives using a mixed-signal integrator

An analog adaptive decision-feedback equalizer (DFE) is described. The DFE cancels intersymbol interference using four feedback taps, and a fifth tap cancels dc offset. The coefficient for each tap is adapted using a small mixed-signal integrator. The DFE dissipates 220 mW at a data rate of 150 Mb/s. The active area is 1.8 mm² in a 1-μm CMOS process     

A 12-bit 80-MSample/s pipelined ADC with bootstrapped digital calibration

This paper presents a prototype analog-to-digital converter (ADC) that uses a calibration algorithm to adaptively overcome constant closed-loop gain errors, closed-loop gain variation, and slew-rate limiting. The prototype consists of an input sample-and-hold amplifier (SHA) that can serve as a calibration queue, a 12-bit 80-MSample/s pipelined ADC, a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) for calibration, and an embedded custom microprocessor, which carries out the calibration algorithm. The calibration is bootstrapped in the sense that the DAC is used to calibrate the ADC, and the ADC is used to calibrate the DAC. With foreground calibration, test results show that the peak differential nonlinearity (DNL) is -0.09 least significant bits (LSB), and the peak integral nonlinearity (INL) is -0.24LSB. Also, the maximum signal-to-noise-and-distortion ratio (SNDR) and spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) are 71.0 and 79.6dB with a 40-MHz sinusoidal input, respectively. The prototype occupies 22.6 mm/sup 2/ in a 0.25-/spl mu/m CMOS technology and dissipates 755 mW from a 2.5-V supply.     

A second-order double-sampled delta-sigma modulator usingindividual-level averaging

A second-order double-sampled delta-sigma modulator is described. It uses all individual-level-averaging switching scheme to convert capacitor mismatch into high-pass noise. With a sampling rate of 25 MHz and an oversampling ratio of 128, the maximum measured signal-to-noise-and-distortion ratio is 82.2 dB, and the total harmonic distortion is -91.0 dB when the input is 2.5 dB below full scale. The modulator is fully differential, occupies 3.75 mm² in a 1.2-μm CMOS process, and dissipates 25.9 mW (10.2 mW analog and 15.7 mW digital)
