Tensile stress–strain and work hardening behaviour of P9 steel for wrapper application in sodium cooled fast reactors

Tensile flow behaviour of P9 steel with different silicon content has been examined in the framework of Hollomon, Ludwik, Swift, Ludwigson and Voce relationships for a wide temperature range (300–873 K) at a strain rate of 1.3 × 10^?3 s^?1. Ludwigson equation described true stress (σ)–true plastic strain (ε) data most accurately in the range 300–723 K. At high temperatures (773–873 K), Ludwigson equation reduces to Hollomon equation. The variations of instantaneous work hardening rate (θ = dσ/dε) and θσ with stress indicated two-stage work hardening behaviour. True stress–true plastic strain, flow parameters, θ vs. σ and θσ vs. σ with respect to temperature exhibited three distinct temperature regimes and displayed anomalous behaviour due to dynamic strain ageing at intermediate temperatures. Rapid decrease in flow stress and flow parameters, and rapid shift in θ–σ and θσ–σ towards lower stresses with increase in temperature indicated dominance of dynamic recovery at high temperatures.     

Transient central hypothyroidism as a cause of failure to thrive in newborns and infants

The course of two neonates and one 4-month-old infant with laboratory and clinical evidence of central hypothyroidism is described. All three presented with failure to thrive and improved after L-T4 therapy. Early recognition and treatment of newborns and infants with central hypothyroidism is important to maximize the potential for growth and development. Two of the three infants have been documented to have transient central hypothyroidism of hypothalamic origin, not previously reported.     

Task Switching After Cerebellar Damage.

The authors of this study investigated task switching following cerebellar damage. The study group consisted of 7 children and adolescents (M age = 13.8 years) who underwent surgical removal of a benign posterior fossa tumor. They were tested at a sufficient interval after surgery (M lag = 6.13 years) for restoration of normal cognitive skills and intelligence. Although all showed normal learning of the task compared with control participants, when rapid behavioral changes were required (short preparation time), they exhibited behavioral rigidity manifested by enhanced switching cost. These results are in line with another study on serial reaction time with the same patients (A. Berger et al., in press). They have important implications for our understanding of the cognitive sequelae of early cerebellar damage as well as the involvement of the cerebellum in task switching. Monitoring the transesterification reaction with laser spectroscopy

The production of biodiesel is rapidly expanding around the world, making it more important to produce this fuel with more energy efficiency. In this paper, we observed a series of transesterification reactions of soy bean oil and methyl alcohol catalyzed by potassium hydroxide. The observations were made using a non-invasive optical technique. This technique is useful to indicate the endpoint of a transesterification reaction or to determine when this reaction is reaching the state of chemical equilibrium. This study made it possible to improve the follow-up of the transesterification reaction, by optimizing the reaction time with a better monitoring system.     

Influence of supercritical CO2 on the interactions between maleated polypropylene and alkyl‐ammonium organoclay

Supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO₂) has been proposed as an effective exfoliating agent for the preparation of polymer‐layered silicate nanocomposites, though there is limited fundamental understanding of this mechanism. This study looks at the interactions of this unique green solvent with three maleated polypropylenes of varying anhydride content and molecular size with an alkyl‐ammonium organoclay. Mixtures of compatibilizers and organoclay were melt‐annealed in a high pressure batch vessel at 200°C and subjected to either a blanket of nitrogen or scCO₂ at a pressure of 9.7 MPa. The structures and properties of these melt‐annealed mixtures were characterized by X‐ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and contact angle measurement. The results indicate that the plasticizing influence of scCO₂ aided intercalation and exfoliation for intercalants of moderate molecular size and anhydride content which would otherwise have limited diffusion into the clay galleries. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Testing for Cointegration with Temporally Aggregated and Mixed‐Frequency Time Series

We examine the effects of mixed sampling frequencies and temporal aggregation on the size of commonly used tests for cointegration, and we find that these effects may be severe. Matching sampling schemes of all series generally reduces size distortion, and the nominal size is obtained asymptotically only when all series are skip sampled in the same way – for example, end‐of‐period sampling. We propose and analyse mixed‐frequency versions of the cointegration tests in order to control the size when some high‐frequency data are available. Otherwise, when no high‐frequency data are available, we discuss controlling size using bootstrapped critical values. We test stock prices and dividends for cointegration as an empirical demonstration.
