On minimum-fuel control of affine nonlinear systems

The minimum-fuel control problem is investigated for a class of multiinput affine nonlinear systems whose associated Lie algebra is nilpotent. After preliminary notions and definitions are presented, emphasis is on the solution to the optimal control problem of the Lie algebra generated by certain system vector fields is nilpotent. Consequences of the maximum principle are deduced for such systems     

The hypersonic environment: Required operating conditions and design challenges

Hypersonic flight powered by airbreathing engines offers the potential for faster response time at long ranges, and reduced cost for access-to-space. In the present paper the operating environment of typical hypersonic vehicles are discussed, including results for the radiation equilibrium wall temperature of external vehicle surfaces and the flow properties through three sample engines spanning the range of hydrocarbon-fueled Mach 4-8 flight and hydrogen-fueled flight at speeds up to Mach 17. Flow conditions at several locations through the sample engines were calculated to provide indications of the required operating flow environment. Additional system consideration such a seals, joints, vehicle integration and in-service engineering are addressed.     

Reliability evaluation of class-E and class-a power amplifiers with nanoscaled CMOS technology

Circuit reliability of class-E and class-A power amplifiers is investigated based on a newly developed degradation subcircuit model. Measured degradation characteristics on the fabricated circuits agree well with the simulation predictions. Using this model, we have found that the class-E amplifier degrades faster than a class-A amplifier, due to a much higher stress level during switching. With a drastic decrease of PAE, a shorter lifetime is expected for a class-E amplifier.     

The relationship between bioelectrical impedance phase angle and subjective global assessment in advanced colorectal cancer

Background  

Bioelectrical Impedance (BIA) derived phase angle is increasingly being used as an objective indicator of nutritional status in advanced cancer. Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) is a subjective method of nutritional status. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between BIA derived phase angle and SGA in advanced colorectal cancer.     

Tri-Gate Bulk MOSFET Design for CMOS Scaling to the End of the Roadmap

A tri-gate bulk MOSFET design utilizing a low-aspect-ratio channel is proposed to provide an evolutionary pathway for CMOS scaling to the end of the roadmap. 3-D device simulations indicate that this design offers the advantages of a multi-gate FET (reduced variability in performance and improved scalability) together with the advantages of a conventional planar MOSFET (low substrate cost and capability for dynamic threshold-voltage control).     

A new method for seed oil body purification and examination of oil body integrity following germination

Plant seeds store triacylglycerols as energy sources for germination and postgerminative growth of seedlings. The triacylglycerols are preserved in small, discrete, intracellular organelles called oil bodies. A new method was developed to purify seed oil bodies. The method included extraction, flotation by centrifugation, detergent washing, ionic elution, treatment with a chaotropic agent, and integrity testing by use of hexane. These processes subsequently removed non-specifically associated or trapped proteins within the oil bodies. Oil bodies purified by this method maintained their integrity and displayed electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance on their surface. Compared with the previous procedure, this method allowed higher purification of oil bodies, as demonstrated by SDS-PAGE using five species of oilseeds. Oil bodies purified from sesame were further analyzed by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and revealed two potential oleosin isoforms. The integrity of oil bodies in germinating sesame seedlings was examined by hexane extraction. Our results indicated that consumption of triacylglycerols reduced gradually the total amount of oil bodies in seedlings, whereas no alteration was observed in the integrity of remaining oil bodies. This observation implies that oil bodies in germinating seeds are not degraded simultaneously. It is suggested that glyoxisomes, with the assistance of mitochondria, fuse and digest oil bodies one at a time, while the remaining oil bodies are preserved intact during the whole period of germination.     

Effects of serotonin and the serotonin blocker metergoline on meal patterns and macronutrient selection

Serotonin [5-hydroxytryptamine(5-HT)] in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of rats has a suppressive effect on feeding behavior and causes a selective decrease in carbohydrate ingestion, specifically at the onset of the natural (dark) feeding period. Studies conducted here provide further evidence for this phenomena, showing a similar dose-related decrease in carbohydrate ingestion at dark onset after PVN injection of 5-HT or of the agonists, d-norfenfluramine or fluoxetine, which act through endogenous 5-HT. To further characterize the effects of this indoleamine on the macrostructure of feeding, a computer-automated data acquisition system was used to analyze macronutrient feeding patterns in freely feeding animals maintained on the pure diets of protein, carbohydrate, and fat. Results indicate that PVN administration of 5-HT at dark onset decreases intake of the carbohydrate nutrient by decreasing meal size, feeding time, and feeding rate for this nutrient and increasing the satiating effect of carbohydrate. These effects, which occur specifically during the first meal after injection, are opposite those seen after peripheral administration of the 5-HT receptor antagonist, metergoline. This drug stimulates feeding through a selective increase in carbohydrate intake, characterized by an increase in meal size, percent composition, and feeding time for this nutrient and a decrease in the satiety ratio for carbohydrate. These results implicate the serotonergic system in the termination of carbohydrate-rich meals that are prevalent during the early hours of the natural feeding cycle.     

Tips and tricks: the hard way--ABCs of quadriplegia care

The following are things I have learned, routines my nurses have brought to me, or that we have developed together during 11-years existence with amyotropic lateral sclerosis (ALS) eight of which have been burdened by ALS induced quadriplegia and ventilator dependence. Items are listed, not in order of importance, which may vary from individual to individual, but alphabetically. Some are unique. Some commonplace. All are useful and many are of surprising value. Deviations from common understanding or practice are marked with an asterisk, and practices that can afford significant economies are double asterisked. This is written in an attempt to share with others in the profession lessons I have learned from personal experience--the hard way.     

Multi-emitter Si/GexSi1-x heterojunctionbipolar transistor with no base contact and enhanced logic functionality

We demonstrate multi-emitter Si/Ge_xSi_1-x n-p-n heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBT's) which require no base contact for transistor operation. The base current is supplied by the additional emitter contact under reverse bias due to the heavy doping of the emitter-base junction. Large-area HBT test structures exhibit good transistor characteristics, with current gain β≈400 regardless of whether the base current is supplied by a test base electrode or one of the emitter contacts. These devices have enhanced logic functionality because of emitter contact symmetry. Since device fabrication does not require base electrode formation, the number of processing steps can be reduced without significant penalty to HBT performance
