Life on Earth has developed at unit gravity, 9.81 m/s2, which was a major factor especially when vertebrates emerged from water onto land in the late Devonian, some 375 million years ago. But how would nature have evolved on a larger planet? We are able to address this question simply in experiments using centrifuges. Based on these studies we have gained valuable insights in the physiological process in plants and animals. They adapt to a new steady state suitable for the high-g environments applied. Information on mammalian adaptations to hyper-g is interesting or may be even vital for human space exploration programs. It has been shown in long duration animal hypergravity studies, ranging from snails, rats to primates, that various structures like muscles, bones, neuro-vestibular, or the cardio-vascular system are affected. However, humans have never been exposed to a hyper-g environment for long durations. Centrifuge studies involving humans are mostly in the order of hours. The current work on human centrifuges are all focused on short arm systems to apply short periods of artificial gravity in support of long duration space missions in ISS or to Mars. In this paper we will address the possible usefulness of a large human centrifuge on Earth. In such a centrifuge a group of humans can be exposed to hypergravity for, in principle, an unlimited period of time like living on a larger planet. The input from a survey under scientists working in the field of gravitational physiology, but also other disciplines, will be discussed.  相似文献

Ranking and selection (R&S) procedures have been widely studied and applied in determining the required sample size (i.e., the number of replications or batches) for selecting the best system or a subset containing the best system from a set of k alternatives. Most of the studies in the R&S have focused on a single measure of system performance. In many practical situations, however, we need to select systems based on multiple criteria. A solution is called Pareto optimal if there exists no other solution which is better in all criteria. This paper discusses extending a R&S procedure to select a Pareto set containing non-dominated systems. Computational results show that the proposed procedures are effective in obtaining non-dominated systems.  相似文献

The Fabry-Perot interferometer is the standard instrument for the direct detection Doppler lidar measurement of atmospheric wind speeds. The multibeam Fizeau wedge has some practical advantages over the Fabry-Perot, such as the linear fringe pattern, and is evaluated for this application. The optimal Fizeau must have a resolving power of 10(6) or more. As the multibeam Fizeau wedge is pushed to such high resolving power, the interference fringes of the device become complicated by asymmetry and secondary maxima. A simple condition for the interferometer plate reflectance, optical gap, and wedge angle reveals whether a set of parameters will yield simple, Airy-like fringes or complex Fizeau fringes. Tilting of the Fizeau wedge improves the fringe shape and permits an extension of the regime of Airy-like fringes to higher resolving power. Sufficient resolving power for the wind lidar application is shown to be possible with a large-gap, low-finesse multibeam Fizeau wedge. Liabilities of the multibeam Fizeau wedge in the wind lidar application include a smaller acceptance solid angle and calibration sensitivity to localized deviations of the plates from the ideal.  相似文献

Due to inherited design issues with the current arrangement of beam ports (BPs) and reactor core-moderator assembly in The Perm State Breazeale Reactor (PSBR), the development of innovative experimental facilities utilizing neutron beams is extremely limited. Therefore, a study has started to examine the existing BPs for neutron and gamma outputs and develop a new core-moderator location and BP geometry in PSBR. Although 7 BPs are placed in PSBR, 2 of them are using currently. In this study BP 4, one of the currently being used BP, is examined. With changing the location of the BP 4 and structure of the core assembly, some artificial models are developed and compared with the original model.  相似文献

The relationships between Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Third Edition (WISC-III) and the Cognitive Assessment System (CAS) with the Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Achievement (WJ-III) were examined for a sample of 119 children (87 males and 32 females) ages 6 to 16. The sample was comprised of children who were referred to a specialty clinic for evaluation. Participants were administered the WISC-III, the CAS, and the WJ-III, in that order. Results indicated that CAS/WJ-III correlations were consistently significantly higher than those found for the WISC-III/WJ-III. The four separate CAS scales added more variance above and beyond the four separate WISC-III scales than the WISC-III added above and beyond the CAS. In addition, the CAS Full Scale accounted for more unique variance and was a stronger predictor of WJ-III Academic Skills Cluster than the WISC-III Full Scale IQ. These results support the validity of the Planning, Attention, Simultaneous, and Successive theory as measured by the CAS in relation to the general intelligence model measured using the WISC-III for explaining variance in achievement for this clinical sample. When TRIZ is introduced into an organization setting, it invariably encounters a host of processes and tools already in place. These can include enterprise tools such as Six Sigma, Design for Six Sigma (DFSS), QFD and Lean Manufacturing. It is fairly easy to combine TRIZ problem‐solving and technological forecasting with these processes and tools, because most of these enterprise tools are problem‐identifying processes that couple easily with the strong problem‐solving capabilities of TRIZ. What is more difficult is to integrate TRIZ thinking with other psychologically based creativity and assessment tools. Users and trainers for these various tools tend to be very protective about each process and do not spend sufficient time thinking about ways to integrate the best of all tools. Organizations also frequently use psychological assessment tools to assist employees in career development, but they are seldom used in a proactive way to improve group problem‐solving. These assessments can be used proactively within the use and implementation of TRIZ. This paper will review suggested ways to effectively integrate TRIZ innovation and problem‐solving principles with these other tools.  相似文献

Portable image processing applications require an efficient, scalable platform with localized computing regions. This paper presents a new class of area I/O systolic architecture to exploit the physical data locality of planar data streams by processing data where it falls. A synthesis technique using dependence graphs, data partitioning, and computation mapping is developed to handle planar data streams and to systematically design arrays with area I/O. Simulation results show that the use of area I/O provides a 16 times speedup over systems with perimeter I/O. Performance comparisons for a set of signal processing algorithms show that systolic arrays that consider planar data streams in the design process are up to three times faster than traditional arrays  相似文献

Real-time image processing requires high computational and I/O throughputs obtained by use of optoelectronic system solutions. A novel architecture that uses focal-plane optoelectronic-area I/O with a fine-grain, low-memory, single-instruction-multiple-data (SIMD) processor array is presented as an efficient computational solution for real-time hyperspectral image processing. The architecture is evaluated by use of realistic workloads to determine data throughputs, processing demands, and storage requirements. We show that traditional store-and-process system performance is inadequate for this application domain, whereas the focal-plane SIMD architecture is capable of supporting real-time performances with sustained operation throughputs of 500-1500 gigaoperations/s. The focal-plane architecture exploits the direct coupling between sensor and parallel-processor arrays to alleviate data-bandwidth requirements, allowing computation to be performed in a stream-parallel computation model, while data arrive from the sensors.  相似文献

Alan Turing anticipated many areas of current research incomputer and cognitive science. This article outlines his contributionsto Artificial Intelligence, connectionism, hypercomputation, andArtificial Life, and also describes Turing's pioneering role in thedevelopment of electronic stored-program digital computers. It locatesthe origins of Artificial Intelligence in postwar Britain. It examinesthe intellectual connections between the work of Turing and ofWittgenstein in respect of their views on cognition, on machineintelligence, and on the relation between provability and truth. Wecriticise widespread and influential misunderstandings of theChurch–Turing thesis and of the halting theorem. Switched reluctance machines (SRMs) have been extensively researched for high performance aerospace applications because of their inherent fault tolerance. Recent work by the authors suggests that with careful design a similar degree of fault tolerance may be achieved with a permanent magnet machine (PM) at a significantly higher torque density than its SRM counterpart. This latter suggestion is of crucial importance in high performance applications, such as aerospace, where a low mass is essential. This paper is concerned with reporting measured results from a fault tolerant PM machine, and using these results to examine the relative merits of SR and PM technology for this application  相似文献
