Robots have been used to model nature, while nature in turn can contribute to the real-world artifacts we construct. One particular domain of interest is chemical search where a number of efforts are underway to construct mobile chemical search and localization systems. We report on a project that aims at constructing such a system based on our understanding of the pheromone communication system of the moth. Based on an overview of the peripheral processing of chemical cues by the moth and its role in the organization of behavior we emphasize the multimodal aspects of chemical search, i.e. optomotor anemotactic chemical search. We present a model of this behavior that we test in combination with a novel thin metal oxide sensor and custom build mobile robots. We show that the sensor is able to detect the odor cue, ethanol, under varying flow conditions. Subsequently we show that the standard model of insect chemical search, consisting of a surge and cast phases, provides for robust search and localization performance. The same holds when it is augmented with an optomotor collision avoidance model based on the Lobula Giant Movement Detector (LGMD) neuron of the locust. A dynamic model of a discrete reversible fuel cell (RFC) system has been developed in a Matlab Simulink® environment. The model incorporates first principles dynamic component models of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell, a PEM electrolyzer, a metal hydride hydrogen storage tank, and a cooling system radiator, as well as empirical models of balance of plant components. The activation of amygdaloid nuclei, the ventral perirhinal cortex (vPRh), and several other brain areas in the rat during the acquisition and expression of olfactory fear conditioning was assessed through Fos immunocytochemistry in 3 separate experiments. The results of Experiment 1 suggest that olfactory and somatosensory inputs may functionally converge in the anterior region of the medial nucleus (aMe). The results of Experiment 2 indicate that the aMe exhibited significantly greater Fos-like immunoreactivity (FLI) in subjects acquiring conditioned stimulus–unconditioned stimulus associations than in those presented with the same olfactory and somatosensory stimuli in a manner that precluded acquisition. The results of Experiment 3 indicate that the vPRh appeared to exhibit learning-related increases in FLI during the expression of previously acquired associations. Collectively, these data suggest that the aMe and vPRh may be critically involved in different aspects of olfactory fear conditioning. AbstractSerial combination drying processes are currently studied as alternatives to conventional drying processes. Compared to freeze-drying (FD), serial combination drying appears to be faster and less expensive, while providing better product quality than hot-air drying (HAD) and microwave-vacuum drying (MVD) as previously demonstrated for carrots. Using the example of carrots, it has also been shown that the drying front moves radially outwards over the course of FD. This unexpected behavior was suggested to originate from the carrots’ heterogeneous structure. It was hypothesized that apple pieces behave differently. Here, this hypothesis was proven by using micro-computed tomography measurements of partly freeze-dried apple pieces. In order to improve the drying process of apple pieces, several single and combination drying processes were carried out. Processes were evaluated by using drying time and sample quality as relevant parameters. Sample quality was determined by analyzing the 3D-structure, rehydration behavior, color, and ingredient retention. Results showed that single MVD is a well suitable drying technique for apple pieces, producing dried products of equal quality to FD. Different from carrots, serial combinations are not necessary to improve the quality of dried apple pieces. Nonetheless, especially a combination of HAD and MVD was useful to obtain specific structures such as puffed pores that did not result from single MVD. 相似文献

We deposit dense, ordered, thin films of Au–dodecanethiol core/shell nanoparticles by the Langmuir–Schäfer (LS) printing method, and find that their resistance at ambient temperature responds selectively and sensitively to alkane odours. Response is a rapid resistance increase due to swelling, and is strongest for alkane odours where the alkane chain is similar in length to the dodecane shell. For decane odours, we find a response to concentrations as low as 15 ppm, about 600 times below the lower explosive limit. Response is weaker, but still significant, to aromatic odours (e.g. Toluene, Xylene), while potential interferants such as polar and/or hydrogen-bonding odours (e.g. alcohols, ketones, water vapour) are somewhat rejected. Resistance is weakly dependent on temperature, and recovers rapidly and completely to its original value within the error margin of measurement. 相似文献

Households are expected to play a pivotal role in reducing the UK's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and the UK Government is encouraging specific household actions to help meet its targets. However, due to the rebound effect, only a portion of the GHG emission reductions estimated by simple engineering calculations are generally achieved in practice. For example, replacing short car journeys by walking or cycling reduces consumption of motor fuels. But this frees up money that may be spent on, for example, purchasing extra clothes or flying on vacation. Alternatively, the money may be put into savings. Since all of these options lead to GHG emissions, total GHG savings may be less than anticipated. Indeed, in some instances, emissions may increase—a phenomenon known as ‘backfire’. We estimate that the rebound effect for a combination of three abatement actions by UK households is approximately 34%. Targeting re-spending on goods and services with a low GHG intensity reduces this to a minimum of around 12%, while re-spending on goods and services with a high GHG intensity leads to backfire. Our study highlights the importance of shifting consumption to lower GHG intensive categories and investing in low carbon investments. 相似文献

We investigated the effect of thin viscoelastic polymer coatings around aggregate particles on the mechanical properties of “micro-concretes” with a maximum aggregate diameter of 10 mm. Aggregate particles > 5 mm were pre-treated with a latex at dosages of up to 2% by mass and dried prior to using the treated aggregate in the micro-concrete mix. Cured prisms were tested in flexion. The results show that thin polymer coatings on aggregates have a significant effect on micro-concrete cracking behaviour at much lower polymer dosages than are commonly used in polymer-modified mortars. We observed a significant improvement in post-peak energy absorption relative to the use of the same amount of polymer dispersed in the bulk paste. But, under the conditions tested here, reductions in the strengths and moduli of the composites due to the polymer additions appear to have more than outweighed the observed positive effects of increases in fracture energy and characteristic length. 相似文献

Task variation has been proposed to reduce shoulder fatigue resulting from repetitive hand–arm tasks. This review analyses the effect of task variation, both ‘temporal (i.e. change of work–rest ratio)’ and ‘activity (i.e. job rotation)’ variation, on physiological responses, endurance time (ET) and subjective feelings. Pubmed was searched and complemented with references from selected articles, resulting in 17 articles. Temporal variation had some positive effects on the objective parameters, as blood pressure decreased and ET increased, and on the subjective feelings, as perceived discomfort decreased. The observed findings of activity variation showed both positive and negative effects of increased activity variation, while hardly any effects were found on electromyography manifestations of fatigue. In conclusion, the evidence for positive effects of increasing the level of variation is scarce. The number of studies on variation is limited, while in most studies the findings were not controlled for the amount or intensity of work. 相似文献

In this work we detail a method that leverages the two color heads of recent low‐end fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printers to produce continuous tone imagery. The challenge behind producing such two‐tone imagery is how to finely interleave the two colors while minimizing the switching between print heads, making each color printed span as long and continuous as possible to avoid artifacts associated with printing short segments. The key insight behind our work is that by applying small geometric offsets, tone can be varied without the need to switch color print heads within a single layer. We can now effectively print (two‐tone) texture mapped models capturing both geometric and color information in our output 3D prints. 相似文献
