The GAViM program provides fine particulate and visibility data for several remote locations in Canada. Two long-term intercomparison studies between the GAViM and a major U.S. aerosol monitoring network, IMPROVE, were used to evaluate the uncertainty in the analytical data produced by proton induced x-ray emission (PIXE), proton elastic scattering analysis (PESA), and gravimetric analysis. GAViM and IMPROVE agreed well for elements from Fe to Zn where PIXE is the most sensitive; the relative difference between the 2 networks for Fe and Zn was <2%. Some lighter elements, e.g., sodium or sulphur, revealed a difference of 10-20%. Furthermore, an empiric conversion scheme for the GAViM absorption data produced by the laser integrated plate method (LIPM) was derived from the comparison to the IMPROVE thermal/optical reflectance (TOR) data. This conversion depends on the aerosol composition and is therefore site specific. It allows estimation of the elemental carbon concentrations from the historic raw light absorption values obtained by LIPM. If the mass attenuation coefficient of the fine aerosol collected at the 2 remote GAViM sites is assumed to be equal to 10 m 2 /g, then the results imply that the light absorption coefficient measured by LIPM is generally higher than the true value by up to a factor of 1.3 or 1.8, respectively. Isothermal conduction calorimetry has been used to monitor the early hydration of Portland–blastfurnace slag (BFS)-blended cements. Portland:BFS composite cements with ordinary Portland cement replacements from 0 to 90 wt% were studied at curing temperatures from 12° to 90°C. Peak II, principally associated with alite (Ca3 SiO5 ) hydration, was accelerated with increasing temperature for all blends. Peak S, associated with BFS hydration, was particularly noticeable at 40° and 60°C. At higher curing temperatures, peak S merged with peak II, indicating thermal activation of BFS. Novel plots of total heat output against percentage replacement show that BFS contributes to the heat of hydration, even at temperatures below its thermal activation. 相似文献

Aqueous dispersions (0.1 wt %) of hydrogels 1 and 5 —formed by crosslinking polyallylamine hydrochloride (MW 60,000) with aldaric acid derivatives, diethyl L ‐tartrate and N,N′‐bis(methoxycarbonylmethyl)‐D ‐glucaramide, respectively—exhibited complete (log 5) kill within 4 h of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans suspended in culture medium. This antimicrobial activity was much higher than that of uncrosslinked polyallylamine (1 wt % killed only 75% of E. coli in 24 h). When dispersed at 10 and 100 ppm, hydrogel 5 displayed complete (log 5) kill of E. coli within 30–60 and 15 min, respectively. Hydrogels 1 and 5 were active against S. aureus and Salmonella choleraesuis dried on hard stainless steel surfaces and accelerated the deaths of E. coli, P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, and C. albicans in a model skin cream formulation. A 0.8% aqueous dispersion of hydrogel 5 was also effective as a hand sanitizer, killing 99.7% of Serratia marcescens on human hands within 5 min. The ability to cope with plant defense chemicals differs between specialist and generalist species. In this study, we examined
the effects of the concentration of the two main iridoid glycosides (IGs) in Plantago lanceolata, aucubin and catalpol, on the performance of a specialist and two generalist herbivores and their respective endoparasitoids.
Development of the specialist herbivore Melitaea cinxia was unaffected by the total leaf IG concentration in its host plant. By contrast, the generalist herbivores Spodoptera exigua and Chrysodeixis chalcites showed delayed larval and pupal development on plant genotypes with high leaf IG concentrations, respectively. This result
is in line with the idea that specialist herbivores are better adapted to allelochemicals in host plants on which they are
specialized. Melitaea cinxia experienced less post-diapause larval and pupal mortality on its local Finnish P. lanceolata than on Dutch genotypes. This could not be explained by differences in IG profiles, suggesting that M. cinxia has adapted in response to attributes of its local host plants other than to IG chemistry. Development of the specialist
parasitoid Cotesia melitaearum was unaffected by IG variation in the diet of its host M. cinxia, a response that was concordant with that of its host. By contrast, the development time responses of the generalist parasitoids
Hyposoter didymator and Cotesia marginiventris differed from those of their generalist hosts, S. exigua and C. chalcites. While their hosts developed slowly on high-IG genotypes, development time of H. didymator was unaffected. Cotesia marginiventris actually developed faster on hosts fed high-IG genotypes, although they then had short adult longevity. The faster development
of C. marginiventris on hosts that ate high-IG genotypes is in line with the “immunocompromized host” hypothesis, emphasizing the potential negative

Two new methods for synthesizing nanostructured HfO2 have been developed. The first method entails exposing HfTe2 powders to air. This simple process resulted in the formation of nanometer scale crystallites of HfO2. The second method involved a two-step heating process by which macroscopic, freestanding nanosheets of HfO2 were formed as a byproduct during the synthesis of HfTe2. These highly two-dimensional sheets had side lengths measuring up to several millimeters and were stable enough to be manipulated
with tweezers and other instruments. The thickness of the sheets ranged from a few to a few hundred nanometers. The thinnest
sheets appeared transparent when viewed in a scanning electron microscope. It was found that the presence of Mn enhanced the
formation of HfO2 by exposure to ambient conditions and was necessary for the formation of the large scale nanosheets. These results present

A new accelerated weathering protocol has been developed which closely replicates the performance of automotive and aerospace coating systems exposed in South Florida. IR spectroscopy was used to verify that the chemical composition changes that occurred during accelerated weathering in devices with a glass filter that produced a high fidelity reproduction of sunlight’s UV spectrum matched those that occurred during natural weathering. Gravimetric water absorption measurements were used to tune the volume of water absorption during accelerated weathering to match that which occurred during natural weathering in South Florida. The frequency of water exposure was then scaled to the appropriate UV dose. A variety of coating systems were used to verify the correlation between the physical failures observed in the accelerated weathering protocol and natural weathering in South Florida. The new accelerated weathering protocol correctly reproduced gloss loss, delamination, cracking, blistering, and good performance in a variety of diverse coating systems. For automotive basecoat/clearcoat paint systems, the new weathering protocol shows significant acceleration over both Florida and previous accelerated weathering tests. For monocoat aerospace systems, the new weathering protocol showed less acceleration than for automotive coatings, but was still an improvement over previous accelerated tests and was faster than Florida exposure. 相似文献

The degree of hydration of the four major anhydrous cement phases in three U.K. portland cement mortars has been observed during the period of water storage at room temperature after an initial short-term heat cure. Such a heat cure at 85° or 100°C for 12 h generally accelerated the initial hydration of the four major anhydrous minerals in portland cement. Subsequent retardation of the degree of hydration of the alite, tricalcium aluminate, and ferrite phases was observed when these heat-cured mortars were stored at ambient temperature. General similarity but some differences in hydration behavior were observed between the three cements. The hydration of belite in the heat-cured mortars during storage at room temperature produced porous inner products that favored deposition of ettringite and reduced the risk of expansive ettringite formation. The substantial retardation in hydration of the aluminate-bearing phases, especially the ferrite phase, during the storage at room temperature raised the overall SO3 /Al2 O3 ratio of the cement hydrates formed, bringing about a potential for ettringite formation and hence the risk of expansion through delayed ettringite formation. 相似文献

Bacteriophages as accessory genetic elements play a crucial role in the dissemination of genes and the promotion of genetic diversity within bacterial populations. Such horizontal transfer of DNA is critical in the emergence of new pathogenic organisms, through the dissemination of genes encoding virulence factors such as toxins, adhesins and agressins. Phages can transfer genes that are not necessary for bacteriophage persistence and are generally recognised by their ability to convert their host bacteria to new phenotypes. This phenomenon is known as phage conversion. If such converting genes encode for virulence factors, the consequences of phage infection may include increased virulence of the host bacteria, and the conversion of a non‐pathogenic strain to a potentially dangerous pathogen.
