Molecular Modeling Studies of Candidate Chromophores

Two 2-dimensional tableaus of heterocyclic molecular systems are shown to have molecular graphs that are pairwise strongly subspectral (having a preponderance of common eigenvalues). Based on this result, the electronic similarity of candidate chromophores are proposed.     

A Unified Structure Theory for Polycyclic Conjugated Hydrocarbons--A Review of What Every Chemist Should Know!

The important concepts of a formula periodic table set, aufbau principle, elementary substructures, excised internal structure/circumscribing algorithm, leapfrog algorithm, and hexagonal-to-pentagonal ring contraction algorithm will be reviewed. These concepts have been instrumental in organizing polyhex/polypent systems from benzenoid hydrocarbons to fullerene carbons. Some recent experimental verification of our prior predictions in this work will be noted.     

Screening catalytic lipase activities with an analytical supercritical fluid extractor

Two different screenings of several commercial lipases were performed to find a lipase with superior performance for the conversion of lipid moieties to their fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) derivatives under supercritical conditions. The first screening was done under hydrolytic conditions in a buffer. The second screening was done under supercritical conditions with CO₂, utilizing some of the same lipases for the methanolysis of different lipids. For the substrates studied, there was a significant difference in lipase activity under the two above conditions. Significant hydrolytic activity was demonstrated for three different lipid types (triglycerides, sterols, and phospholipids) with Lipase PS30, but when the same lipase was immobilized on an Accurel carrier (polypropylene), the activity decreased considerably. The opposite was found for Lipase G, which showed strong activity when immobilized and under supercritical conditions. Furthermore, Chirozyme L-1 was superior under supercritical conditions. The altered substrate specificity that some of these lipases show in supercritical CO₂ suggests several interesting synthetic options and applications under these conditions.     

A solution thermodynamic study of soybean oil/solvent systems by inverse gas chromatography

Inverse gas chromatography (IGC) has seen wide application in the characterization of molten polymers, fibrous materials, and natural products, such as proteins and carbohydrates, over the past fifteen years. This study describes a relatively simple IGC technique for evaluating solute-solvent interactions using a refined soybean oil as a solvent. Utilizing soybean columns that are 5–20% by weight of the inert support has allowed the determination of a number of thermodynamic solution parameters for 22 solute-solvent pairs in the temperature range of 55–125°C. Weight and mole fraction activity coefficients, along with Henry's Law constants at infinite dilution, are presented for six solute classes. In general, activity coefficients increase with carbon number for n-alkanes, alkyl-substituted benzenes, and n-alkanoic acids at all temperatures investigated, while the reverse is found for the n-alkanols. The activity coefficient data indicate that aromatic solutes, chlorinated hydrocarbons, ketones, and cyclohexane can readily dissolve soybean oil. Calculated heats of mixing for n-alkanols were found to be positive (to 2.84 kcal/mole) while recorded enthalpic interactions were weak for aromatic solutes, lower alkanes, and chlorinated hydrocarbons. The relevance of the above data to such problems as oil dissolution and solvent devolatilization are discussed. The effects of immunological castration against GnRH with recombinant OL protein (Ovalbumin-LHRH-7) on carcass and meat quality characteristics,histological appearance of testes and pituitary gland in Kıvırcık male lambs

The aims of the study were to investigate the effects of immunization against GnRH using OL protein (Ovalbumin-LHRH-7) on feedlot performance, carcass, meat quality and some reproductive traits in K?v?rc?k ram lambs. Ram lambs in the immunization (I, n = 7) group were immunized against GnRH using OL protein and boosted 2 weeks later. Control (C, n = 7) group was not treated. The animals were kept at pasture for 6 weeks after the first immunization, subjected to a 70 day fattening program, and then slaughtered. Growth performance, various carcass and meat quality characteristics were not affected from the immunization. GnRH immunization induced GnRH antibody production, suppressed testosterone production and testicular growth (P < 0.01). Testicular structure was negatively affected from the immunization, but not pituitary. These results suggest that immunization against GnRH with OL could be an alternative castration technique in ram lambs without negatively affecting carcass and meat quality characteristics.     

Technical Assessment of Space Solar-Power Research Program

An independent analysis of current NASA studies on space solar power (SSP) by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics found many opportunities for international collaboration in an SSP program, including computer modeling, solar array technologies development, demonstrations of SSP-enabling technologies, identification and pursuit of multiple-use applications, wireless power transmission experiments and studies, joint use of certain facilities, and perhaps most important, a wide range of global policy, economic, environmental, and legal considerations. Key SSP technologies could find broad applications in human space exploration, science and robotic space exploration, national security missions, commercial space development, and terrestrial applications. New system configurations that substantially reduce SSP technical and economic risk, remarkable improvements in solar-power generation technologies, and significant advancements in structural, robotic, power management, and materials technologies have been identified. The major barrier to eventual implementation of terrestrial power delivery from space, as with all large space systems, is the lack of a national commitment to develop a viable path to low-cost, reliable space transportation.     

Conceptions of personality disorders and dimensions of personality.

Differing conceptions of personality disorders inherent in the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory Personality Disorder Scales and the Personality Adjective Checklist were evaluated within the context of the circumplex model of interpersonal behavior and the 5-factor model of personality in a sample of 581 university students. Conceptions of personality disorders were strongly and clearly related to dimensions of normal personality traits. Although the circumplex model illuminated conceptions of some of the disorders, the full 5-factor model was required to capture and clarify the entire range of personality disorders. Implications of these findings are discussed with reference to (a) personality disorders and personality traits and (b) suggestions for assessment of personality disorders.
