Morphology of amorphous layers ballistically deposited on a planar substrate

Identification of a specific biomolecular target appropriately sensitive to a wide array of anesthetics has been elusive. At concentrations close to their respective ED50's for anesthesia in man or other species, 18 compounds, differing in potencies up to 66,000 fold, inhibited cytochrome P450 mediated metabolism of aminopyrine, a synthetic substrate, and arachidonic acid (AA), an endogenous substrate, in isolated liver microsomes. There was a highly significant correlation for both substrates between the absolute concentrations required for anesthesia (EC50) and for inhibition of P450 activity (Ki or IC50). The mean Ki/EC50 ratio was 0.97 for inhibition of aminopyrine demethylase. The mean IC50/EC50 ratios were 0.42 and 0.64 for inhibition of two AA-derived products and 2.8 for a third; a mean ratio of 1.4 for inhibition of overall AA metabolism suggests interaction of general anesthetics with a composite of P450 isozymes. The universal cytochrome P450 monooxygenases, in conjunction with other lipid oxygenases (cyclooxygenases and lipoxygenases) participate in the second messenger AA cascade. In nerve cells the sensitivity of these enzymes to hydrophobic neurodepressant drugs may underlie the state of general anesthesia: reversible disruption of intracellular and intercellular signalling without impairment of enzymes vital to cell respiration.     

Effective electromagnetic and chiral parameters of chiral composite material

The effective parameters of chiral composite are studied using a simple model, that is, randomly oriented non-interacting wire helices embedded in a nonchiral host medium. It is found that both the effective permittivity ? and permeability μ are independent on the handedness of the chiral objects while the effective chirality admittance ξ is dependent. It is also found that when the ratio of the radius of the chiral helix to its pitch is about 0.23, maximum chirality admittance is achieved. The effective parameters of equichiral sample are also discussed.     

单麦克风和双麦克风语音增强系统的研究

本文对采用减谱法和箱关法的语音增强系统进行了研究，系统的噪声为白噪声和普通机房噪声。减谱法采用单麦克风输入，试验中发现语音的分帧方法对消噪影响很大，通过比较得到了一种具有明显消噪效果的分帧方法，在相关法中采用双麦克风输入，对两个输入信号之间的时延差进行了补偿，在求维纳滤波器系数时，对信号谱进行统计平均，从而使消噪后的语音信号具有较好的自然度。在研究以上两种方法的基础上，我们提出了一种混合消噪系统，     

Association of INAD with NORPA is essential for controlled activation and deactivation of Drosophila phototransduction in vivo

Visual transduction in Drosophila is a G protein-coupled phospholipase C-mediated process that leads to depolarization via activation of the transient receptor potential (TRP) calcium channel. Inactivation-no-afterpotential D (INAD) is an adaptor protein containing PDZ domains known to interact with TRP. Immunoprecipitation studies indicate that INAD also binds to eye-specific protein kinase C and the phospholipase C, no-receptor-potential A (NORPA). By overlay assay and site-directed mutagenesis we have defined the essential elements of the NORPA-INAD association and identified three critical residues in the C-terminal tail of NORPA that are required for the interaction. These residues, Phe-Cys-Ala, constitute a novel binding motif distinct from the sequences recognized by the PDZ domain in INAD. To evaluate the functional significance of the INAD-NORPA association in vivo, we generated transgenic flies expressing a modified NORPA, NORPAC1094S, that lacks the INAD interaction. The transgenic animals display a unique electroretinogram phenotype characterized by slow activation and prolonged deactivation. Double mutant analysis suggests a possible inaccessibility of eye-specific protein kinase C to NORPAC1094S, undermining the observed defective deactivation, and that delayed activation may similarly result from NORPAC1094S being unable to localize in close proximity to the TRP channel. We conclude that INAD acts as a scaffold protein that facilitates NORPA-TRP interactions required for gating of the TRP channel in photoreceptor cells.

Electrical properties and positron annihilation study of (Ba<Subscript>1−<Emphasis Type="Italic">x</Emphasis></Subscript>Ho<Subscript><Emphasis Type="Italic">x</Emphasis></Subscript>)TiO<Subscript>3</Subscript> ceramics

DC resistivity, dielectric constant, dielectric loss and positron annihilation spectra of (Ba_1−x Ho _x )TiO₃ ceramics have been measured as a function of holmium concentration x. It has been found that the DC resistivity of (Ba_1−x Ho _x )TiO₃ is strongly dependent on the Ho content: it decreases three orders of magnitude and reaches a minimum at x = 0.4%. Doping with 0.6% holmium increases the permittivity of BaTiO₃ by approximately three times (from ∼1,300 to ∼4,000), with only a slight increase in the corresponding dielectric loss. The local electron density and defect concentration estimated using positron annihilation technique conforms well to the features found in the dielectric and resistivity measurements. The results have been discussed in terms of a mixed compensation model.
