Arctic fox (Alopex lagopus) and wolverine (Gulo gulo) tissues were collected in the Canadian Arctic from 1998 to 2001 and analyzed for various essential and non-essential elements. Several elements (Ag, Al, As, B, Ba, Be, Co, Cr, Mo, Ni, Sb, Sn, Sr, Tl, U and V) were near or below the detection limits in >95% arctic fox and wolverine samples. Concentrations of Cd, Cu, Fe, total Hg (THg), Mn, Pb, Se and Zn were quantifiable in >50% of the samples analyzed and reported herein. Hepatic elemental concentrations were not significantly different among arctic foxes collected at Ulukhaqtuuq (Holman), NT (n=13) and Arviat, NU (n=50), but were significantly greater than concentrations found in wolverine liver from Kugluktuk (Coppermine), NU (n=12). The mean (+/-1 S.E.) concentrations of Cd in kidney were also significantly greater in arctic fox (1.08+/-0.19 microg g(-1) wet wt.) than wolverine (0.67+/-0.18 microg g(-1) wet wt.). However, mean hepatic Cu concentrations (Ulukhaqtuuq: 5.5+/-0.64; Arviat: 7.1+/-0.49 microg g(-1) wet wt.) in arctic foxes were significantly lower than in wolverines (32+/-3.3 microg g(-1) wet wt.). Hepatic total Hg (THg) concentrations in arctic fox from this study were not significantly different from specimens collected in 1973, suggesting that THg concentrations have not changed dramatically over the past 30 years. The mono-methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in selected (n=10) arctic fox liver samples from Arviat (0.14+/-0.07 microg g(-1) wet wt.) comprised 14% of THg. While the molar concentrations of THg were correlated with Se in arctic foxes and wolverines, the hepatic Hg/Se molar ratios were consistently lower than unity; suggesting that Se-mediated detoxification pathways of Hg are not overwhelmed at current exposure. 相似文献

The creation of idealised, dimensionally reduced meshes for preliminary design and optimisation remains a time-consuming, manual task. A dimensionally reduced model is ideal for assessing design changes through modification of element properties without the need to create a new geometry or mesh. In this paper, a novel approach for automating the creation of mixed dimensional meshes is presented. The input to the process is a solid model which has been decomposed into a non-manifold assembly of smaller volumes with different meshing significance. Associativity between the original solid model and the dimensionally reduced equivalent is maintained. The approach is validated by means of a free-free modal analysis on an output mesh of a gas turbine engine component of industrial complexity. Hydrogels are formed using various triggers, including light irradiation, pH adjustment, heating, cooling, or chemical addition. Here, a new method for forming hydrogels is introduced: ultrasound-triggered enzymatic gelation. Specifically, ultrasound is used as a stimulus to liberate liposomal calcium ions, which then trigger the enzymatic activity of transglutaminase. The activated enzyme catalyzes the formation of fibrinogen hydrogels through covalent intermolecular crosslinking. The catalysis and gelation processes are monitored in real time and both the enzyme kinetics and final hydrogel properties are controlled by varying the initial ultrasound exposure time. This technology is extended to microbubble–liposome conjugates, which exhibit a stronger response to the applied acoustic field and are also used for ultrasound-triggered enzymatic hydrogelation. To the best of the knowledge, these results are the first instance in which ultrasound is used as a trigger for either enzyme catalysis or enzymatic hydrogelation. This approach is highly versatile and can be readily applied to different ion-dependent enzymes or gelation systems. A method is developed for using neural recordings to control functional electrical stimulation (FES) to nerves and muscles. Experiments were done in chronic cats with a goal of designing a rule-based controller to generate rhythmic movements of the ankle joint during treadmill locomotion. Neural signals from the tibial and superficial peroneal nerves were recorded with cuff electrodes and processed simultaneously with muscular signals from ankle flexors and extensors in the cat's hind limb. Cuff electrodes are an effective method for long-term chronic recording in peripheral nerves without causing discomfort or damage to the nerve. For real-time operation the authors designed a low-noise amplifier with a blanking circuit to minimize stimulation artifacts. They used threshold detection to design a simple rule-based control and compared its output to the pattern determined using adaptive neural networks. Both the threshold detection and adaptive networks are robust enough to accommodate the variability in neural recordings. The adaptive logic network used for this study is effective in mapping transfer functions and therefore applicable for determination of gait invariants to be used for closed loop control in an FES system. Simple rule-bases will probably be chosen for initial applications to human patients. However, more complex FES applications require more complex rule-bases and better mapping of continuous neural recordings and muscular activity. Predicting physical properties of materials with spatially complex structures is one of the most challenging problems in material science. One key to a better understanding of such materials is the geometric characterization of their spatial structure. Minkowski tensors are tensorial shape indices that allow quantitative characterization of the anisotropy of complex materials and are particularly well suited for developing structure-property relationships for tensor-valued or orientation-dependent physical properties. They are fundamental shape indices, in some sense being the simplest generalization of the concepts of volume, surface and integral curvatures to tensor-valued quantities. Minkowski tensors are based on a solid mathematical foundation provided by integral and stochastic geometry, and are endowed with strong robustness and completeness theorems. The versatile definition of Minkowski tensors applies widely to different types of morphologies, including ordered and disordered structures. Fast linear-time algorithms are available for their computation. This article provides a practical overview of the different uses of Minkowski tensors to extract quantitative physically-relevant spatial structure information from experimental and simulated data, both in 2D and 3D. Applications are presented that quantify (a) alignment of co-polymer films by an electric field imaged by surface force microscopy; (b) local cell anisotropy of spherical bead pack models for granular matter and of closed-cell liquid foam models; (c) surface orientation in open-cell solid foams studied by X-ray tomography; and (d) defect densities and locations in molecular dynamics simulations of crystalline copper. 相似文献

The theory and use of the "three-phase" model in enantioselective gas-liquid chromatography utilizing a methylated cyclodextrin/polysiloxane stationary phase is presented for the first time. Equations are derived that account for all three partition equilibria in the system, including partitioning between the gas mobile phase and both stationary-phase components and the analyte equilibrium between the polysiloxane and cyclodextrin pseudophase. The separation of the retention contributions from the achiral and chiral parts of the stationary phase can be easily accomplished. Also, it allows the direct examination of the two contributions to enantioselctivity, i.e., that which occurs completely in the liquid stationary phase versus the direct transfer of the chiral analyte in the gas phase to the dissolved chiral selector. Six compounds were studied to verify the model: 1-phenylethanol, alpha-ionone, 3-methyl-1-indanone, o-(chloromethyl)phenyl sulfoxide, o-(bromomethyl)phenyl sulfoxide, and ethyl p-tolylsulfonate. Generally, the cyclodextrin component of the stationary phase contributes to retention more than the bulk liquid polysiloxane. This may be an important requirement for effective GC chiral stationary phases. In addition, the roles of enthalpy and entropy toward enantiorecognition by this stationary phase were examined. While enantiomeric differences in both enthalpy and entropy provide chiral discrimination, the contribution of entropy appears to be more significant in this regard. Osteopetrosis or Albers-Schonberg disease is a rare hereditary disorder of osteoclast function in which resorption of bone is diminished, resulting in abnormally dense bones. The condition is known to occur in at least four recognizable clinical patterns, each of which is variable. The optimal treatment of fractures and of bone deformity in these patients has not previously been made clear. To determine appropriate orthopedic management of the condition, we conducted a survey of the membership of the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America. The combined experience of 57 surgeons who treated 79 patients with osteopetrosis was compiled. Four femoral neck fractures treated by closed reduction and internal fixation had a satisfactory result, but three treated nonoperatively developed varus and required osteotomy. A total of 20 hips was treated for coxa vara by various means, none of which was free of complications. Valgus osteotomy, when used as the primary treatment for coxa vara, was the most consistently satisfactory procedure, whereas in situ pinning failed in two of three hips. Fourteen subtrochanteric fractures and 31 other fractures of the femur were treated. Good results were reported with traction or casting or both in the majority of those fractures. Twenty-nine tibia fractures were treated successfully, the majority by nonoperative means. Upper extremity fractures healed well with closed reduction and casting. Vertebral fractures, spondylolysis, and back pain were most frequently treated without surgery. 相似文献
