Variability of the geometry of the human common carotid artery. A vessel cast study of 31 specimens

The carotid artery is of special interest both for the pathologist because of its frequent depositions and for the fluid mechanic because of its complex flow properties. However, current knowledge of its geometry is insufficient. Therefore, a vessel cast study was undertaken and a method to fabricate vessel casts was developed. At post mortem the arteries are excised and filled with a resin at the proper transmural pressure. Thirty-one vessel casts of the carotid artery were performed and the following selected geometric parameters of these vessel casts were measured: the diameters of the main branches of carotid bifurcation (common, internal and external arteries) and the angles between internal, external and common carotid arteries. The geometric parameters vary considerably and may contribute to a corresponding variability in local hemodynamics.     

Effects of diversion and reperfusion of pancreaticobiliary juice on amylase release from isolated rat pancreas

Excitability of functionally different alpha-motoneurons was studied in 62 patients with gunshot injuries of nervous trunks of lower extremities both before and during process of rehabilitation by means of physical factors. The correlation of reactions of spinal cord motoneurons and the degree of injuries of nervous trunks was observed. Neuroapraxia of nervous trunks was accompanied by multidirectional alterations in reflex activity of large and small alpha-motoneurons. It was depressed in axonothermesis and lost in simultaneous full anatomic interruption of ischiatic nerve and trunks of both fibular and tibial nerves. Under influence of physical factors the function of motoneurons was normalized in neuroapraxia and was improved in axonothermesis of nervous trunks.     

Examination of veins with magnetic resonance imaging and it's place in the diagnostic algorithm of patients with deep venous thrombophlebitis]

The aim of our study was to show the results of the Magnetic Resonance Angiography of pelvis and lower extremities. 21 patients with clinical signs of venous thrombosis were examined. The obtained results show the MRA is very useful in evaluation of venous flow.     

Complete single mode wavelength coverage over 40 nm with a superstructure grating DBR laser

The spectral characteristics of a widely tunable super structure grating distributed Bragg reflector (SSG-DBR) laser are investigated and the design considerations of the grating reflectors are given. By systematically adjusting the control currents of the two reflector sections and the phase section it is experimentally shown that every wavelength in an interval of 40 nm can be reached with a side-mode suppression usually better than 30 dB

High-breakdown-voltage AlInAs/GaInAs junction-modulated HEMT's(JHEMT's) with regrown ohmic contacts by MOCVD

A technology for increasing both the two-terminal gate-drain breakdown and subsequently the three-terminal-off-state breakdown of AlInAs/GaInAs high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) to record values without substantial impact on other parameters is presented. The breakdown in these structures is dependent on the multiplication of electrons injected from the source (channel current) and the gate (gate leakage) into the channel. In addition, holes are generated by high fields at the drain and are injected back into the gate and source electrodes. These phenomena can be suppressed by increasing the gate barrier height and alleviating the fields at the drain. Both have been achieved by incorporating a p⁺-2DEG junction as the gate that modulates the 2DEG gas and by utilizing selective regrowth of the source and drain regions by MOCVD. The 1-μm-gate-length devices fabricated have two-terminal gate-drain and three-terminal-off-state breakdown voltages of 31 V and 28 V, respectively     

Modeling of micturition characteristics based on prostaticstiffness modulation induced using hormones and adrenergic antagonists

The authors present a biosensor intended to evaluate prostatic stiffness. The stiffness of the prostate was modulated using hormonal induction and adrenergic stimulation. The results show that the sensor can be sufficiently accurate to discriminate between soft prostates used as controls and those stiffened with hormones. The modulation produced by an adrenergic agent on prostatic stiffness was detected using this system. An electrical model was constructed embodying the parameters of prostatic stiffness, micturition frequency, and volume, demonstrating that prostatic stiffness correlates with micturition frequency     

Antigenic stimuli do not influence thymic B lymphocytes: a morphological and functional study in germ-free and conventionally reared piglets

We have recently reported that thymic B lymphocytes (TBL) are the first B-cell subpopulation undergoing isotype switching to IgG and IgA during embryonic life. The aim of this study is to analyze the influence of antigenic stimulation on TBL location and activity using a germ-free (GF) newborn pig model, in which maternal antibodies and antigens do not affect B-cell development. Immunohistological analysis showed that TBL were disseminated mainly in the thymic medulla. There were no differences in the distribution of TBL, both in GF newborn piglets before and after colonization with Escherichia coli and in older conventionally reared (CONV) piglets. The number of immunoglobulin (Ig)-secreting cells measured by the ELISPOT method was not influenced by microflora and food antigens. IgM-positive cells secreting IgM and CD45RC-positive cells spontaneously producing IgM, IgG, and IgA were detected in newborn thymus. Our findings suggest that TBL differentiation and Ig switching to IgG and IgA-secreting cells is not influenced by external antigens and that the thymic microenvironment plays an important role in this process.
