A 2.2-mW CMOS bandpass continuous-time multibit /spl Delta/-/spl Sigma/ ADC with 68 dB of dynamic range and 1-MHz bandwidth for wireless applications

A delta-sigma (/spl Delta//spl Sigma/) analog-to-digital converter featuring 68-dB dynamic range and 64-dB signal-to-noise ratio in a 1-MHz bandwidth centered at an intermediate frequency of 2 MHz with a 48-MHz sample rate is reported. A second-order continuous-time modulator employing 4-bit quantization is used to achieve this performance with 2.2 mW of power consumption from a 1.8-V supply. The modulator including references occupies 0.36 mm/sup 2/ of die area and is implemented in a 0.18-/spl mu/m five-metal single-poly digital CMOS process.     

A Fully Integrated MIMO Multiband Direct Conversion CMOS Transceiver for WLAN Applications (802.11n)

802.11n is the latest offering from the IEEE standard committee tasked with enabling and enhancing WLAN systems. This standard utilizes several techniques to offer a much larger rate versus range than the legacy WLAN systems. A single-chip multiband direct-conversion CMOS MIMO transceiver (2times2) targeted for WLAN applications is presented. This transceiver is capable of satisfying the requirements of the draft 802.1 In standard and achieves PHY rates of > 270 Mb/s. The receivers and transmitters achieve an EVM of better than -41 dB (0.9%) and -40 dB (1.0%) operating in legacy g and a modes, respectively. From a 1.8 V supply and with both cores operating, the chip draws 275 mA in RX mode and 280 mA in TX mode.     

CD3 delta deficiency arrests development of the alpha beta but not the gamma delta T cell lineage

The CD3 complex found associated with the T cell receptor (TCR) is essential for signal transduction following TCR engagement. During T cell development, TCR-mediated signalling promotes the transition from one developmental stage to the next and controls whether a thymocyte undergoes positive or negative selection. The roles of particular CD3 components in these events remain unclear. Indeed, it is unknown whether they have specialized or overlapping roles. However, the multiplicity of CD3 components and their evolutionary conservation suggest that they serve distinct functions. Here the developmental requirement for the CD3 delta chain is analyzed by generating a mouse line specifically lacking this component (delta-/- mice). Strikingly, CD3 delta is shown to be differentially required during development. In particular, CD3 delta is not needed for steps in development mediated by pre-TCR or gamma delta TCR, but is required for further development of thymocytes expressing alpha beta TCR. Absence of CD3 delta specifically blocks the thymic selection processes that mediate the transition from the double-positive to single-positive stages of development.     

Effect of nickel on hydrogen permeation in ferritic/pearlitic low alloy steels

Nickel offers several beneficial effects as an alloying element to low alloy steels. However, it is, in the oil and gas industry, limited by part 2 of the ISO 15156 standard to a maximum of 1 wt% due to sulfide stress cracking resistance concerns.Hydrogen uptake, diffusion, and trapping were investigated in research-grade ferritic/pearlitic low alloy steels with Ni contents of 0, 1, 2 and 3 wt% by the electrochemical permeation method as a function of temperature and hydrogen charging conditions.Qualitatively, the effective diffusion coefficient, D_eff, decreased with increasing Ni content. The sub-surface lattice hydrogen concentration, C₀, decreased with increasing Ni content in all charging conditions while the trend between the sub-surface hydrogen concentration in lattice and reversible trap sites, C_OR, and Ni content varied with the charging conditions. Irreversible trapping, evaluated by consecutive charging transients, was not observed for any of the materials. Lastly, the possible influence of an increasing fraction of pearlite with increasing Ni content is discussed.     

Single-wall carbon nanotubes with diameters approaching 6 nm obtained by laser vaporization

Single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with large diameters from 2 to 5.6 nm were prepared by pulsed laser vaporization of carbon rods doped with Co, Ni and FeS in an atmosphere of Ar:H₂. The SWNT material was characterized by SEM, HRTEM, Raman, IR, UV-VIS-NIR absorption spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis.     

Affective implications of seeking psychological counseling.

Asked 315 undergraduates to evaluate either "a typical person," "a typical person seeking counseling," "a client seeking counseling," or "a patient seeking counseling" on the Personal Attitude Inventory. Ss evaluated a typical person significantly more positively than the other target groups mentioned above. These findings held regardless of the sex of the respondent or whether the respondents had previously sought counseling services. It appears that counselors may need to continue to educate the public to offset the negative stereotypes that seem to be surrounding counseling and those who seek it.
