Effect of surface-modifying macromolecules and solvent evaporation time on the performance of polyethersulfone membranes for the separation of chloroform/water mixtures by pervaporation

Polyethersulfone (PES) membranes using different evaporation periods were fabricated by the phase-inversion method. Pervaporation experiments were conducted for chloroform/water mixtures to determine the selectivity of the PES membranes. It was found that chloroform could be concentrated in the permeate from chloroform/water binary feed mixtures by PES membranes prepared using longer evaporation periods, and that the selectivity of PES membranes in pervaporation could be reversed by shorter evaporation periods. This study also showed that by adding surface-modifying macromolecules (SMM) up to 1 wt % into the casting solution, chloroform enrichment in the permeate could be increased by 50%. Chloroform enrichment increased with increasing SMM concentration until an optimal value, after which the enrichment decreased. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Continuous hydrogen evolution from cyclohexanes over platinum catalysts supported on activated carbon fibers

The continuous production of hydrogen from cyclohexanes is achieved effectively using Pt/ACF (ACF = activated carbon fiber) catalysts in a fixed-bed flow reactor. The Pt catalysts are more effective than a Pd/ACF catalyst for the reaction. Besides cyclohexane, methylcyclohexane, 1,4-dimethylcyclohexane, and p-menthane can also be employed as hydrogen source in the reaction system.     

松辽流域初始水权分配实践与探索

根据松辽流域用水现状和需水预测,流域水资源承载能力将成为流域经济社会可持续发展的关键制约因素.节水型社会建设是解决这一问题的战略举措.水权制度建设和水市场建立是水资源管理适应市场经济的正确选择.面对松辽流域水资源管理的实际情况,流域初始用水权分配是实现战略举措的一项基础工作,也是水权制度建设和水市场建立的起步工作.结合松辽流域的具体情况,松辽委适时组织开展了流域初始用水权分配专题研究,并在霍林河与大凌河流域进行了初始用水权分配的实践探索.     

Low thermal resistance high-speed top-emitting 980-nm VCSELs

Increasing copper plated heatsink radii from 0 to 4 /spl mu/m greater than the mesa in vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) reduced the measured thermal resistance for a range of device sizes to values 50% lower than previously reported over a range of device sizes. For a 9-/spl mu/m diameter oxide aperture, the larger heatsink increases output power and bandwidth by 131% and 40%, respectively. The lasers exhibit a 3-dB modulation frequency bandwidth up to 9.8 GHz at 10.5 kA/cm/sup 2/. The functional dependence of thermal resistance on oxide aperture diameter indicates the importance of lateral heat flow to mesa sidewalls.

Breast feeding: Mo, As, Mn, Zn and Cu concentrations in milk of economically poor Indian tribal and urban women

The breast milk of 86 economically poor Indian women was analysed by neutron activation analyses for Mo, As, Mn, Zn, and Cu concentrations. The colostrum of 10 tribal women contained 0.27 microgram Cu/g, 2.1 micrograms Zn/g, 19.9 ng Mn/g, 0.73 ng As/g and 5.4 ng Mo/g, whereas 19 urban women had corresponding concentrations of 0.91 microgram Cu/g, 7.3 micrograms Zn/g, 15.3 ng Mn/g, 0.5 ng As/g and 15.3 ng Mo/g. A survey of mature milk between 1 and 6 months, 6 and 12 months and 1 and 2.5 years indicated decreasing concentrations of Zn and Mo, but increasing Mn concentrations as the post-partum period progressed. Malnourished infants received breast milk containing less Cu, Zn and Mn than those who were better nourished and of the same age group. The results, therefore, imply the necessity of supplementing breast feeds in the economically poorer groups.
