Costs of mastitis: facts and perception   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
A model to calculate the economic losses of mastitis on an average Dutch dairy farm was developed and used as base for a tool for farmers and advisors to calculate farm-specific economic losses of mastitis. The economic losses of a clinical case in a default situation were calculated as euro210, varying from euro164 to euro235 depending on the month of lactation. The total economic losses of mastitis (subclinical and clinical) per cow present in a default situation varied between euro65 and euro182/cow per year depending on the bulk tank somatic cell count. The tool was used to measure perception of the total economic losses of mastitis on the farm and the farmers' assessment of the cost factors of mastitis on 78 dairy farms, of which 64 were used for further analyses. Most farmers (72%) expected their economic losses to be lower than those revealed by our calculation made with their farm information. Underestimating the economic losses of mastitis can be regarded as a general problem in the dairy sector. The average economic losses assessed by the farmers were euro78/cow per year, but a large variation was given, euro17-198/cow per year. Although the average assessment of the farmers of the different cost factors is close to the default value, there is much variation. To improve the adoption rate of advice and lower the incidence of mastitis, it is important to show the farmers the economic losses of mastitis on their farm. The tool described in this paper can play a role in that process.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Many consumers perceive organic foods as more nutritious than conventional foods. However, the existing evidence is insufficient to support or refute this belief. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of three different model cultivation systems on selected major and trace element contents of dried foodstuffs (carrots, kale, peas, potatoes and apples) grown in two consecutive years, as well as mineral retention determined in 36 rats (second generation in a multi‐generation study) fed diets based on these foodstuffs from one year. RESULTS: Overall, there was no evident trend towards differences in element content of foodstuffs or diets due to the use of different cultivation systems, and differences between harvest years exceeded those seen between cultivation methods. Also, no significant differences in the retention of elements in rats fed diets derived from different cultivation systems were seen, since higher intake resulted in correspondingly higher excretion. CONCLUSION: This study does not support the belief that organically grown foodstuffs generally contain more major and trace elements than conventionally grown foodstuffs, nor does there appear to be an effect on the bioavailability of major and trace minerals in rats. A political agreement from 2005 stated that an evaluation of the entire Danish energy efficiency policy portfolio must be carried out before the end of 2008, with the aim to assess the following: (1) Is the policy portfolio sufficient to meet the energy efficiency targets? (2) Do the policies enable the national goals to be met in a cost-effective manner? (3) Is the overall design of the policy portfolio appropriate? The evaluation gave recommendations on how to improve and develop the portfolio, mainly using cost-effectiveness as criteria. The evaluation was completed in December 2008, and this paper presents the main findings and the subsequent impact on Danish policy. A key lesson learned is the importance of including all energy efficiency policies in the evaluation. Examining the entire portfolio of policies (as opposed to only selected policies) gave way to findings that would otherwise not have been captured. With its broad perspective, the evaluation found that the policy instruments prioritised the commercial and industrial sectors less than the household and public sectors. The recommendations made by the authors contributed to the implementation of new taxes for the commercial and industrial sectors together with the reform of the Electricity Saving Trust to a Centre for Energy Savings charged with energy savings within all sectors, except transport—both which have been important steps towards a more cost-effective solution.  相似文献

A mathematical simulation model was developed that can determine the three-dimensional wind velocity field over a complex terrain. The Ténès area in the Valley of Cheliff in Algeria was used as a case study. This region is exposed to south-west circulation that makes it favorable to the use of wind energy. Knowledge of wind fields is crucial for predicting the dispersion of pollutants, for forecasting meteorological weather, for fire spread prediction and in the design and implementation of wind turbines. By means of a mass consistent model, an in-house program was developed to calculate the three-dimensional wind velocity field in the study region. The model was supported by a numerical box in which flow through is allowed for in the upper and lateral boundaries. The bottom boundary through which no flow through occurs was determined by the topographic relief at the surface. From measured wind velocities, observed values were calculated by interpolation-extrapolation. Using an optimization method, the adjusted velocities were obtained from constraints, observed velocities and the continuity equation. The model was verified with wind point data, the relative error did not exceed 6%.  相似文献

In the past, the topic of excessive salt consumption associated with various chronic diseases became a focus of nutritional science. Enzymes such as hydrolases and specifically peptidases are widely used in industry since they do not require cofactors, are often stable at high pH values, and have a broad cleavage specificity. Thus, a new approach to use peptidases would be the generation of L-arginyl dipeptides, which do not have a taste on their own, but are able to enhance the salty taste. This thesis should focus on the isolation and characterisation of arginyl-specific peptidase genes from basidiomycetes to generate these dipeptides. First, various peptidase genes from Trametes versicolor, Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Schizophyllum commune were isolated and expressed in Escherichia coli or Komagataella phaffii. The serine (ABB73029) peptidase from P. chrysosporium and the aspartate peptidase from T. versicolor (EIW62808) were successfully purified. Activity assays showed that the aspartate peptidase from T. versicolor is not an arginyl-specific peptidase, while the analysis of cleavage sites indicates that the serine peptidase from P. chrysosporium is an exopeptidase. Next, 29 basidiomycetes were cultivated over 24 days in minimal medium with 1 % gluten and analysed regarding their endo- and exopeptidase activity. Out of 29 fungi, five interesting species with arginyl-specific peptidase activity were chosen, namely Agrocybe aegerita, Fomitop- sis pinicola, Flammulina velutipes, Hypholoma sublateritium and Pleurotus eryngii. After purification of the culture supernatant using size exclusion chromatography, active fractions were used to hydrolyse the substrate casein, and cleavage products were analysed. Cleavage sites were only detected for A. aegerita, F. velutipes and P. eryngii. Beside arginyl-specific cleavage sites also a high amount of undesired exopeptidase cleavage sites was determined assuming that these peptidases are probably exopeptidases rather than arginyl-specific peptidases. Generation of salt taste enhancing dipeptides should finally be achieved with a dipeptidyl- peptidase V (DPPV) from Pleurotusfloridanus. PflDPPV was heterologously produced in E. coli, had optima at pH 8.5 and 60 °C and was not completely inhibited by the tested peptidase inhibitors.  相似文献

Boiling phenomena are an important aspect in security and efficiency for technical applications with high heat flux like nuclear reactors. This study presents optical coherence tomography (OCT) as a novel modality for three-dimensional and two-dimensional time resolved imaging of nucleate boiling on heated surfaces on a microscopic scale with high spatial (<10 μm) and temporal (>25 frames per second) resolution. Within this study, a borosilicate glass plate coated with an optically transparent and electrically conductive indium tin oxide (ITO) layer with a thickness of approximately 100 nm was used as heating surface. The combination of these two properties allows optical inspection of the nucleate boiling from the backside by OCT focused on the formation, growth and detachment of single bubbles. We demonstrated for the first time that OCT is an excellent tool to acquire two-dimensional and three-dimensional images of the base of vapor bubbles from the backside of the heated surface. The acquired images allow for instance the temporally resolved measurement of the bubble diameter, diameter of the bubble base and the contact angle. Exploiting the phase information of the acquired OCT signal stacks allows imaging the movement of the bubble surrounding fluid. We think that OCT will provide many new insights into the boiling phenomena at the bubble base. The recent enhancement of the acquisition rates of OCT systems will facilitate four-dimensional imaging of single bubble evaporation procedures in the nearer future.  相似文献

The present study investigated taste preferences in a sample of 1705 children aged 6 to 9 years from survey centres in Italy, Estonia, Cyprus, Belgium, Sweden, Germany, Hungary, and Spain and aimed to identify factors correlated with taste preference. Children’s preferences for varying levels of sucrose (sweet) in apple juice and fat, sodium chloride (salt) and monosodium glutamate (umami) in crackers were assessed using paired-comparison tests. Socio-demographics (age, sex, parental education), early feeding practises (breastfeeding, introduction of fruits), parenting behaviour (TV viewing, using food as a reward) and taste threshold sensitivity for sucrose (sweet), sodium chloride (salt), caffeine (bitter) and monosodium glutamate (umami) were investigated as possible correlates of taste preferences. Parents reported on socio-demographics, early feeding and parenting behaviour. Taste thresholds were determined via a paired-comparison staircase method. Country of residence was the strongest factor related to preferences for all four tastes. Taste preferences also differed by age. Preference for sugar and salt increased between 6 and 9 years of age while preference for monosodium glutamate decreased. The age differences remained significant even after adjustment for sex, country of residence, parental education and early feeding habits. Sex, parental education, early feeding habits, TV viewing, using food as a reward and taste thresholds were not consistently related to taste preferences among the survey centres. In summary, the results highlight the importance of culture and age in taste preferences in children younger than 10 years of age.  相似文献
