Glass fiber reinforced polymeric (GFRP) composites are being accepted as potential materials for ultra‐low temperature applications. The current investigation is to evaluate effect of liquid nitrogen (LN2) conditioning (for different intervals of time) on the loading rate sensitivity of tensile response of GFRP composites. In order to assess this, tensile tests of the unconditioned and conditioned specimens were carried out at different crosshead speeds viz. 1, 10, 100, 500, and 1000 mm/min. At 1 mm/min crosshead speed, an improvement of 3.33% and 7.3% ultimate tensile strength (UTS) value was observed in case of 0.25 and 1 h conditioned GFRP composites, respectively, as compared to unconditioned GFRP composites. Similarly, the specimens tested at 1000 mm/min show an improvement of 11.39% and 12.02% UTS for 0.25 and 1 h LN2 conditioned GFRP composites, respectively, as compared to unconditioned GFRP composites. Effect of LN2 conditioning on crosshead speed sensitivity of modulus and strain at break are also reported. The in‐service temperature of the GFRP composite was measured using temperature modulated differential scanning calorimetry. Furthermore, dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer was used in the temperature range (40–200 °C) to correlate the mechanical and thermomechanical response of the GFRP composites. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To better understand the magnitude of arsenic contamination in groundwater and its effects on human beings, a detailed study was carried out in Jalangi, one of the 85 arsenic affected blocks in West Bengal, India. Jalangi block is approximately 122 km2 in size and has a population of 215538. Of the 1916 water samples analyzed (about 31% of the total hand tubewells) from the Jalangi block, 77.8% were found to have arsenic above 10 microg l(-1) [the World Health Organization (WHO)-recommended level of arsenic in drinking water], 51% had arsenic above 50 microg l(-1) (the Indian standard of permissible limit of arsenic in drinking water) and 17% had arsenic at above 300 microg l(-1) (the concentration predicting overt arsenical skin lesions). From our preliminary medical screening, 1488 of the 7221 people examined in the 44 villages of Jalangi block exhibit definite arsenical skin lesions. An estimation of probable population that may suffer from arsenical skin lesions and cancer in the Jalangi block has been evaluated comparing along with international data. A total of 1600 biologic samples including hair, nail and urine have been analyzed from the affected villages of Jalangi block and on an average 88% of the biologic samples contain arsenic above the normal level. Thus, a vast population of the block may have arsenic body burden. Cases of Bowen's disease and cancer have been identified among adults who also show arsenical skin lesions and children in this block are also seriously affected. A biomatrix was prepared from rice husk, a lignocellulosic waste from agro-industry, for the removal of several heavy metals as a function of pH and metal concentrations in single and mixed solutions. The biomatrix was characterized using scanning electron microscope and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, which indicated the presence of several functional groups for binding metal ions. Different experimental approaches were applied to show mechanistic aspects, especially the role of calcium and magnesium present in the biomatrix in ion exchange mechanism. The ultimate maximum adsorption capacity obtained from the Langmuir isotherm increases in the order (mmol/g): Ni (0.094), Zn (0.124), Cd (0.149), Mn (0.151), Co (0.162), Cu (0.172), Hg (0.18) and Pb (0.28). The sorption of Cr(III) onto biomatrix at pH 2 was 1.0 mmol/g. Speciation of chromium, cadmium and mercury loaded on the biomatrix was determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The biomatrix has adsorption capacity comparable or greater to other reported sorbents.  相似文献

Efforts to adapt and extend graphic arts printing techniques for demanding device applications in electronics, biotechnology and microelectromechanical systems have grown rapidly in recent years. Here, we describe the use of electrohydrodynamically induced fluid flows through fine microcapillary nozzles for jet printing of patterns and functional devices with submicrometre resolution. Key aspects of the physics of this approach, which has some features in common with related but comparatively low-resolution techniques for graphic arts, are revealed through direct high-speed imaging of the droplet formation processes. Printing of complex patterns of inks, ranging from insulating and conducting polymers, to solution suspensions of silicon nanoparticles and rods, to single-walled carbon nanotubes, using integrated computer-controlled printer systems illustrates some of the capabilities. High-resolution printed metal interconnects, electrodes and probing pads for representative circuit patterns and functional transistors with critical dimensions as small as 1 mum demonstrate potential applications in printed electronics.  相似文献

User mobility management is one of the important components of mobile multimedia systems. In a cell-based network, a mobile should be able to seamlessly obtain transmission resources after handoff to a new base station. This is essential for both service continuity and quality of service assurance. In this paper, we present strategies for accommodating continuous service to mobile users through estimating resource requirements of potential handoff connections. A diverse mix of heterogeneous traffic with diverse resource requirements is considered. The investigate static and dynamic resource allocation schemes. The dynamic scheme probabilistically estimates the potential number of connections that will be handed off from neighboring cells, for each class of traffic. The performance of these strategies in terms of connection blocking probabilities for handoff and local new connection requests are evaluated. The performance is also compared to a scheme previously proposed by Yu and Leung (see IEEE J. Select. Areas Commun., vol.15, p.1208-25, 1997). The results indicate that using dynamic estimation and allocation, we can significantly reduce the dropping probability for handoff connections  相似文献

One of the parameters used to characterize the partial discharge (PD) behavior is its inception voltage. The partial discharge inception voltage (PDIV) should always be higher than the operating voltage to ensure that PD does not occur at or near operating voltage. Under these circumstances, other PD parameters such as apparent charge, energy dissipation need not be considered. This paper deals with modeling of PDIV of epoxy-resin post insulators using a neural network (NN). The PDIV is obtained experimentally for various shapes and sizes of post insulators, with a working voltage in the range of 3.3 to 33 kV. The electrode spacing d and creepage length l are the key parameters employed for the present modeling. An adaptively trained multilayer NN is employed for the modeling. Detailed studies are carried out to optimize the NN parameters for minimum error. The model results obtained closely follow the experimental data indicating the effectiveness of NN as an efficient tool in estimation of PDIV of epoxy-resin postinsulators  相似文献

Combined effects of slip velocity and volume fraction of slip spheres on the heat transfer characteristics of multiple slip spheres are numerically investigated within the framework of a free surface cell model combined with a linear slip velocity along the surface of the slip spheres. The governing conservation equations of the mass, momentum, and energy are solved by a segregated approach using a simplified marker and cell algorithm implemented on a staggered grid arrangement in spherical coordinates. The convection and diffusion terms of conservation equations are discretized using quadratic upstream interpolation for convective kinematics and second‐order central differencing schemes, respectively. Prior to obtaining new results, this numerical solver is validated by comparison of present results with the existing literature values. Further new results are obtained for a range of conditions as; Reynolds number, Re: 0.1–200; Prandtl number, Pr: 1–100; volume fraction of slip spheres, Φ: 0.1–0.5 and slip parameter, λ: 0.01–100. The effects of these dimensionless parameters on isotherm contours and local and average Nusselt numbers are thoroughly delineated. Finally, a new empirical correlation for the average Nusselt number of multiple smooth slip spheres is proposed on the basis of present numerical results.  相似文献

A systematic model is presented for a free expansion polymer foaming process that includes simultaneous nucleation and bubble growth. An influence volume approach, which couples nucleation and bubble growth, is used to account for the limited supply of dissolved gas. The melt rheology is described using the Larson viscoelastic model. The initial conditions are obtained at the upper bound of critical cluster size under conditions of elastic deformation. The resulting set of equations are solved using a combination of numerical techniques. A parametric study is conducted to examine the effects of key process variables on bubble growth, nucleation, and final bubble size distribution. It shows that the factors influencing nucleation and growth affect the ultimate bubble sizes and their distribution. The Gibbs number, a dimensionless measure of the barrier to overcome for nucleation, has the strongest impact on the cellular structure of the foam. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Two new donor–acceptor (D–A) conjugated polymers P1 and P2 containing 3,4-didodecyloxythiophene and 1,3,4-oxadiazole units are synthesized via Wittig reaction methodology. Cyclic voltammetry studies reveal that the polymers are both p and n dopable, and possess low-lying LUMO energy levels (?3.34?eV for P1 and ?3.46?eV for P2) and high-lying HOMO energy levels (?5.34?eV for P1 and ?5.27?eV for P2). The optical band gap of the polymers is in the range of 2.25–2.29?eV, calculated from the onset absorption edge. The polymers emit orange to yellow light in the film state when irradiated with a UV light. The synthesized polymers are used to prepare polymer nanocomposites with different wt% of silver nanoparticles. The polymer nanocomposites are characterized by UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Both polymers and polymer/Ag nanocomposites show good thermal stability with onset decomposition temperature around 300?°C under nitrogen atmosphere. The nonlinear optical properties of polymers and polymer/Ag nanocomposites are measured by Z-scan technique. Both polymers and polymer nanocomposites show a good optical limiting behavior. Nearly five times enhancement in the nonlinear optical properties is observed for polymer/Ag nanocomposites. The value of effective two-photon absorption coefficient (β) is in the order of 10?10–10?11?m/W. These results indicate that the synthesized polymers (P1 and P2) and their Ag nanocomposites are expected to be good candidates for application in photonic devices.  相似文献
