Thermomagnetic nernst effect in an electrolytic system

A phenomenological theory for thermomagnetic effect in an electrolyte system is worked out. A sinusoidal variation of the induced emf is observed perpendicular to the heat flow when an external magnetic field is applied to the system, across the flow with varying angles. The experimental results are found in good agreement with the presented theory in HNO₃ (900 × 10^?4 M). Planar Nernst effect is therefore measured and the coefficient γ is estimated.     

Perceptual integration on the Rorschach as an indicator of cognitive capacity: A developmental study of racial differences in a clinic population.

Rorschach protocols of 173 7-14 yr old Blacks and Whites who had been evaluated at a child guidance clinic were rescored with respect to developmental level of perceptual integration. Blacks had higher perceptual-integration scores in comparison to Whites. This finding, however, was accounted for by the higher performance of low-IQ (70-89) Blacks as compared to low-IQ Whites. No differences were obtained between average-IQ (90-109) Blacks or Whites. It is suggested that standard IQ tests may not adequately tap the cognitive capacity of some Black children and that use of the Rorschach from a developmental/structural perspective may provide a useful adjunctive measure of intelligence that would more realistically assess children's cognitive competence. Arterial elastin synthesis in the young chick

In the growing chick a marked stimulation in soluble and mature arterial elastin synthesis occurs 2 and 5 weeks after hatching. Measurement of [3H]valine and [3H]proline incorporation into arterial soluble protein during this period indicated that most of the label is found in a 70 000 dalton protein subunit. The labeled soluble subunit had the characteristics of native soluble elastin or tropoelastin. During the period in which the greatest percentage increase in mature elastin occurs, the highest specific activities of soluble [3H]valine-labeled protein were observed. These changes were striking and suggest a developmental period for the growing chick in which factors related to elastin metabolism may be more easily studied.     

The Output of A Two-Stage System with Unreliable Machines and Limited Storage

Buffer storage allows the decoupling of successive stages of large automatic production systems, which can be important when the machines sometimes fail. System designers should know how much added buffer capacity increases the hourly output of such systems. Previously available methods for predicting this increase treat systems with one machine in each stage. We present a computationally simple heuristic procedure for estimating hourly line output for two stage systems in which each stage may have several machines.     

A 50-year comparison of University of Minnesota freshmen's reading performance.

The Minnesota Reading Examination for College Students and the Minnesota Speed of Reading Test were administered to 1,313 college freshmen in 1928 and to 1,154 in 1978. On the reading tests, the 1978 sample scored significantly lower than the 1928 sample on vocabulary, comprehension, and reading rate. The potential utility of this research, which covers a 50-yr time span, is discussed in terms of the generalizability of these findings to other college populations. A Theoretical Study of Controlled Ventilation

This paper is a theoretical study of controlled ventilation with a respirator. An electric circuit analog of the respiratory system is used with respiratory parameters of the normal adult. Deleterious effects of positive pressure ventilation are considered and related to the model. The effects considered include peak alveolar pressure and its time of occurrence, work, and average alveolar pressure. Different pressure waveforms are used as the driving source for the respirator model. These waveforms are rectangle, ramp, negative ramp, sine, and exponential.     

Evaluating the effectiveness of a participatory ergonomics approach in reducing the risk and severity of injuries from manual handling

Manual handling is the greatest contributor to non-fatal injury and disease in the workplace, commonly accounting for one-third of national injury counts. Interventional strategies that have focused on selecting or modifying the worker have been ineffective in reducing injury risk. In recent times, participatory ergonomics has been widely adopted as a process to reduce the risk of injury from manual handling but it is not well validated as an intervention. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a participatory ergonomics risk assessment approach in reducing the rate and severity of injuries from manual and non-manual handling sustained by a cohort of 137 cleaners within a hospital setting. The date of injury and the workers' compensation claim cost and hours lost from work were obtained for each injury incurred during the 4-year pre-intervention and 3-year intervention period. The age, gender and hours worked were ascertained for every cleaner whether injured or not. Using generalized linear mixed modelling analysis, reductions of rate of injury by two-thirds, workers' compensation claim costs by 62% and hours lost by 35% for manual handling injuries were found to be associated with the intervention period. Although the cleaners experienced a significant intervention period reduction in non-manual handling injury rate, the corresponding changes in severity of injury were not significant. The success of the intervention supports the adoption of a participatory ergonomics approach in reducing the rate and consequence of injuries in the workplace.     

Glucose decomposition at high temperature, mild acid, and short residence times

Glucose is an intermediate product in the conversion of biomass to liquid fuels and chemicals via H₂SO₄ hydrolysis and subsequent fermentation. Unfortunately, glucose is destroyed as well as formed in this reaction. This study of glucose decomposition kinetics can be used to more accurately determine the kinetics of glucose formation from cellulosic biomass. The results demonstrate the importance of parallel reversion reactions in explaining the higher rates of disappearance of glucose found in this study as compared to earlier studies. An heuristic set of decomposition rate constants, applicable to conditions likely to be found in a flow reactor, are presented.     

Electrodermal base level, tonic arousal, and adaptation in chronic schizophrenics.

Electrodermal arousal was studied at rest and during repetitive stimulation in chronic schizophrenics who were rated at either extreme of the Montrose Rating scale (MRS), either receiving a phenothiazine or no drugs, and in a control normal sample. Resting base level was significantly higher among Hi than Lo MRS, and among Nondrug than Drug patients: no patient sample was reliably below Control level. Nondrug patients showed no impairment in tonic arousal relative to Controls, even when such patients showed impaired phasic response (though the drug was seemingly associated with diminished tonic response). Considerable independence was demonstrated between phasic and tonic electrodermal functions. Unlike Controls (or Drug patients), Nondrug patients showed a general heightening of electrodermal arousal during repetitive innocuous stimulation. A vigilance hypothesis was offered suggesting that sensitivity to the general demands of the environment remains high among chronic patients, even where there may be a reduction in the input of specific items of information from that environment. The real cost of psychology intern services: Are they a good buy?

Changing patterns of funding may require calculation of the real cost of services performed by psychology interns, including that of supportive educational and supervisory efforts. At a center with 10 interns and intensive individual supervision, the cost was approximately $13,000 per year per intern for approximately 800 hrs of direct service—an outcome that compares favorably to salaries of psychological technicians.
