Imparting molecular recognition to carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by conjugating them with bio-molecules has been an area of great interest as the resulting highly functionalized CNT-bioconjugates find their applications in various fields like molecular level electronics, pharmaceuticals, drug delivery, novel materials and many others. In this work we demonstrate the synthesis of functionally engineered single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs)-peptide nucleic acid (PNA) conjugates especially for nanoelectronic applications. Here we exploited the exceptional structural and chemical advantages of PNA (an artificial analogue of DNA) to join SWNTs ropes. SWNT-PNA-SWNT conjugates were synthesized using carbodiimide coupling chemistry and characterized by host of techniques like scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results from different techniques confirm the formation of these conjugates. Theoretical analysis of molecular orbitals obtained by quantum mechanical simulations show that the highest occupied molecular orbital is located on the glutamate linker and that this interface state will align closely to the valence band of the extended SWNT facilitating charge transfer. The unique electrical and structural properties of these conjugates make them a potential candidate for application in CNT based nanodevices.  相似文献

During the last decade, worldwide attention of researchers has focused on nano-ceramic composites with superior mechanical behavior and improved reliability for structural applications. Here we report the development of a multi-layer composite (MLC) of tape cast nano zirconia with high failure energy. The MLC samples were fabricated by thermocompression of green tapes prepared from 3 mole % yttria stabilized zirconia (3-YSZ) powder with a primary crystallite size of 27 nm. Depending on the number of layers, the MLC samples exhibited failure energy (238.97 KJm-3) more than two times higher than that of the single tape (≈107 KJm-3) with a reasonably high bi-axial flexural strength (≈630 MPa), high hardness (≈ 13 GPa at 49 N), and indentation fracture toughness nearly four times as high as that of the single tape. In addition, these MLC materials showed the presence of a R-curve behavior.  相似文献

Over the past 6 years, we have engaged in a multi-faceted computational investigation of water–silica interactions at the fundamental physical and chemical level. This effort has necessitated development and implementation of simulation methods including high-accuracy quantum mechanical approaches, classical molecular dynamics, finite element techniques, and multi-scale modeling. We have found that water and silica can interact via either hydration or hydroxylation. Depending on physical conditions, the former process can be weak ( < 0.2 eV) or strong (near 1.0 eV). Compared to hydration, the latter process yields much larger energy gains (2–3 eV/water). Some hydroxylated silica systems can accept more water molecules and undergo further hydroxylation. We have also studied the role of external stress, effects of finite silica system size, different numbers of water molecules, and temperature dependences.  相似文献

This paper analyses two queueing models consisting of two units I and II connected in series, separated by a finite buffer of size N. In both models, unit I has only one exponential server capable of serving customers one at a time and unit II consist of c parallel exponential servers, each of them serving customers in groups according to general bulk service rules. When the queue length in front of unit II is less than the minimum of batch size, the free servers take a vacation. On return from vacation, if the queue length is less than the minimum, they leave for another vacation in the first model, whereas in the second model they wait in the system until they get the minimum number of customers and then start servicing. The steady-state probability vector of the number of customers waiting and receiving service in unit I and waiting in the buffer is obtained for both the models, using the modified matrix geometric method. Spectral patterns of sound transmission through the Eustachian tube (ET) have been obtained in a series of experiments designed to identify ET dysfunction. Previous studies of ET function using sonometry have relied on heuristic and somewhat arbitrary methods in interpreting the data. In this study, an automated classification algorithm was developed to separate these sonograms into three distinct groups. From a total of 150 sample spectra, 75 were used in the formation of learning sets. The remaining spectra were classified into these three groups using standard Bayesian techniques. Both parametric and nonparametric methods were applied in estimating conditional probability density functions. Results of classification are compared with an independent test of ET function. Agreement between our classifier and the results of the independent test was as good as 97.3 percent. The results of this study indicate that an automated classification procedure can effectively distinguish among the three major types of sonograms obtained from ET sonometry.  相似文献

A study of the effect of ash yield on the maximum thickness of the plastic layer (MTPL) of some coking coals (as measured by the Sapozhnikov plastometer) has revealed that with an increase in the former the latter in general decre?es. A rectilinear relation approximately exists between the ash percentage (dry basis) and log MTPL values of coals. For the samples studied, a multiple correlation incorporating the rank factor was found to be unnecessary. Higher Fe2O3 and SO3 contents from the coal were found to be associated with higher MTPL values.  相似文献
