A procedure is presented for accurately determining the thickness, optical functions, and surfaceroughness characteristics of thin-film insulators from two-channel spectroscopic polarization-modulation ellipsometry data. For films with minimal surface roughness, the optical functions can be determined over the entire measured spectrum; for rougher films, the analysis of the spectroscopic ellipsometry data yields meaningful values of the optical functions only in the transparent region. In general, the films must be transparent in a given range of wavelengths sampled by the ellipsometer so that at least two interference oscillations can be observed. The use of the procedure is illustrated with the determination of the optical functions of SrTiO(3) and BaTiO(3) thin films grown on MgO, and of SiO(x) films grown on Si. For SrTiO(3) and BaTiO(3), the thin-film results are compared with the measured optical functions of the respective bulk materials. 相似文献

Two new charged particle detectors have been flown in five recent Shuttle flights. The tissue-equivalent proportional counter measures the lineal energy spectrum of space radiation in the 0.26-300 keV micrometer-1 range. The charged particle spectrometer is a double dE/dx x E and dE/dx x Chrenekov detector system which provides a measurement of the differential energy spectrum of protons from 13 to 350 MeV and dose rate in silicon. In this paper the dose rate, equivalent dose rate, and radiation, quality factor for trapped protons and cosmic radiation are reported on separately. A comparison of the integral LET spectra with recent transport code calculations shows significant disagreement. Using the calculated dose rate from the omnidirectional AP8MAX model with IGRF reference magnetic field epoch 1970, and observed dose rate as a function of geographic latitude and longitude, the westward drift of the south Atlantic anomaly has been determined. The east-west effect has also been studied and a 'second' radiation belt observed. A comparison of the galactic cosmic radiation (GCR) lineal energy transfer spectra with model calculations shows disagreement comparable with those of the trapped protons. 相似文献

Evaluation of Root Exudates of Seven Sorghum Accessions 总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Seven sorghum accessions were evaluated quantitatively and qualitatively for the composition of their root exudates. Utilizing a unique capillary mat growing system, root exudates were collected from all sorghum accessions. Exudates were subjected to TLC and HPLC analysis to evaluate their chemical composition. Within each sorghum accession, variation existed in the amount of exudate produced and the chemical constituents of each exudate. Sorgoleone was the predominant constituent identified in each accession's exudate. Other closely related compounds, including 5-ethoxysorgoleone, 2,5-dimethoxysorgoleone, three other minor components (MW = 364, 388, and 402), and one unidentified component comprised the minor constituents of the root exudate. Our past work has shown that several of these compounds have potent phytotoxic activity as photosystem II inhibitors, thereby lending further support to the concept that Sorghum spp. are allelopathic and weed suppressive. 相似文献

We identify water-soluble (23 degrees C) crude oil NSO nonvolatile acidic, basic, and neutral crude oil hydrocarbons by negative-ion ESI and continuous flow FD FT-ICR MS at an average mass resolving power, m/deltam50% = 550,000. Of the 7000+ singly charged acidic species identified in South American crude oil, surprisingly, many are water-soluble, and much more so in pure water than in seawater. The truncated m/z distributions for water-soluble components exhibit preferential molecular weight, size, and heteroatom class influences on hydrocarbon solubility. Acidic water-soluble heteroatomic classes detected at >1% relative abundance include O, O2, O3, O4, OS, O2S, O3S, O4S, NO2, NO3, and NO4. Parent oil class abundance does not directly relate to abundance in the water-soluble fraction. Acidic oxygen-containing classes are most prevalent in the water-solubles, whereas acidic nitrogen-containing species are least soluble. In contrast to acidic nitrogen-containing heteroatomic classes, basic nitrogen classes are water-soluble. Indirect atmospheric deposition of PCBs was examined in subwatersheds of the Delaware River Estuary. Tributary PCB loads and atmospheric PCB concentrations were used to understand the pass-through efficiencies for nine rivers/ creeks for which PCB inputs appeared to be dominated by atmospheric deposition. The pass-through efficiency, E, was calculated from tributary loads and atmospheric deposition fluxes. Unfortunately, uncertainties in the gaseous and dry particle deposition velocities, vg and vd, respectively, render the calculated atmospheric deposition fluxes highly uncertain. In order to circumvent this problem, export of PCBs from the watershed was related directly to atmospheric PCB concentrations via a new mass transfer coefficient, the watershed delivery rate or vws, which describes the process by which the watershed transfers PCBs from the airto the River's main stem. vws increases with increasing chlorination and is significantly correlated with vapor pressure. This trend suggests that the transfer of PCBs from the atmosphere to the River via the watershed is more efficient for high molecular weight PCBs than for low molecular weight PCBs. This may indicate that the selected watersheds are at or close to equilibrium with respect to gaseous exchange of PCBs, such that lower molecular weight congeners undergo substantial revolatilization after deposition. The magnitude of the pass-through efficiency, E, depends on the deposition velocities used to calculate the atmospheric deposition flux, but when congener-specific deposition velocities are used, E is independent of vapor pressure and is relatively constant at about 3%. 相似文献

We demonstrate the use of polyethylene devices (PEDs) for assessing hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) in aquatic environments. Like semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs) and solid-phase microextraction (SPME), PEDs passively accumulate HOCs in proportion to their freely dissolved concentrations. Polyethylene-water partition constants (K(PEW)S) were measured in the laboratory for eight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), five polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and one polychlorinated dibenzop-dioxin (PCDD), and these were found to correlate with octanol-water partition constants (K(OW)s; log K(PEW) = 1.13 log K(OW) - 0.86, R2 = 0.89). Temperature and salinity dependencies of K(PEW) values for the HOCs tested were well predicted with excess enthalpies of solution in water and Setschenow constants, respectively. We also showed that standards, impregnated in the PED before deployment, can be used to correct for incomplete equilibrations. Using PEDs, we measured phenanthrene and pyrene at ng/L concentrations and 2,2',5,5'-tetrachlorobiphenyl at pg/L concentrations in Boston Harbor seawater, consistent with our findings using traditional procedures. PEDs are cheap and robust samplers, competent to accomplish in situ, time-averaged passive sampling with fast equilibration times (approximately days) and simplified laboratory analyses. 相似文献

Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) are long-term residents and apex predators in southeast U.S. estuaries and are vulnerable to bioaccumulation of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Dart biopsy samples were collected from 45 dolphins in Biscayne Bay (Miami, FL), 34 of which were matched using fin markings to a photo identification catalogue. Blubber samples were analyzed for 73 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners, six polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) congeners, and organochlorine pesticides including dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (DDT) and metabolites, chlordanes, and dieldrin. Total PCBs (sigma 73PCBs) were present in the highest concentrations and were 5 times higher in males with sighting histories in the northern, metropolitan area of Biscayne Bay than males with sighting histories in the southern, more rural area [geometric mean: 43.3 (95% confidence interval: 28.0-66.9) vs 8.6 (6.3-11.9) microg/g wet mass, respectively]. All compound classes had higher concentrations in northern animals than southern. The differences in POP concentrations found on this small geographic scale demonstrate that differential habitat use can strongly influence pollutant concentrations and should be considered when interpreting bottlenose dolphin POP data. The PCB concentrations in northern Bay dolphins are high as compared to other studies of estuarine dolphins and may place these animals at risk of reproductive failure and decreased immune function. 相似文献

This study describes an analytical framework that permits quantitative consideration of variability and uncertainty in microbial hazard characterization. Second-order modeling that used two-dimensional Monte Carlo simulation and stratification into homogeneous population subgroups was applied to integrate uncertainty and variability. Specifically, the bootstrap method was used to simulate sampling error due to the limited sample size in microbial dose-response modeling. A data set from human feeding trials with Campylobacter jejuni was fitted to the log-logistic dose-response model, and results from the analysis of FoodNet surveillance data provided further information on variability and uncertainty in Campylobacter susceptibility due to the effect of age. Results of our analyses indicate that uncertainty associated with dose-response modeling has a dominating influence on the analytical outcome. In contrast, inclusion of the age factor has a limited impact. While the advocacy of more closely modeling variability in hazard characterization is warranted, the characterization of key sources of uncertainties and their consistent propagation throughout a microbial risk assessment actually appear of greater importance. 相似文献
