The antioxidant properties of different ecotypes of chestnut nut (cv. Judia) were studied. Total phenolics and flavonoids were also determinated. Total phenolics amount ranged from 9.6 mg/g of GAE (hottest ecotype, Murça) to 19.4 mg/g of GAE (coldest ecotype, Valpaços). Gallic and ellagic acid were the predominant compounds and Valpaços had the highest values while, Murça had the lowest ones. The antioxidant capacity of ethanolic extracts were evaluated through several biochemical essays: ABTS (2,2′-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid)) and DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical-scavenging activity, FRAP (ferric reducing/antioxidant power) and inhibition of oxidative haemolysis in erythrocytes. In order to evaluate the antioxidant efficiency of each ecotype, the EC50 values were calculated. Once again Valpaços revealed the best antioxidant properties, presenting much lower EC50 values. Climatic conditions influence seems to be a limiting factor for production of phenolic compounds and consequently for the antioxidant properties of chestnut nuts. 相似文献

The objective of the study was to determine if experimentally induced clinical mastitis before ovulation resulted in alterations of endocrine function, follicular growth, or ovulation. On d 8 (estrus = d 0), cows were challenged (TRT; n = 19) with Streptococcus uberis or were not challenged (control; n = 14). Forty-eight hours after induction of luteal regression on d 12, blood samples were collected to determine estradiol-17β, LH pulse frequency, and occurrence of the LH surge. Ovaries were scanned to monitor follicular growth and ovulation. Cows with clinical mastitis (n = 12) had elevated rectal temperatures, somatic cell counts, and mammary scores. Estrus and ovulation occurred in 4 of 12 clinically infected cows and in all control cows. Cows that were challenged but did not develop clinical mastitis (n = 5) displayed estrus and ovulated. Due to differences in expression of estrus, cows were further subdivided for analyses into 4 groups: control, TRT-EST (infected cows that displayed estrus; n = 4), TRT-NOEST (infected cows that did not display estrus; n = 8), and NOMAS (cows that were inoculated but did not develop mastitis; n = 4). Ovulation rate was 100% for CON, NOMAS, and TRT-EST compared with 0% for TRT-NOEST cows. Size of the ovulatory follicle (“presumed” ovulatory follicle in TRT-NOEST cows) was similar for all groups. Frequency of LH pulses was decreased in TRT-NOEST compared with CON, TRT-EST, and NO-MAS. Estradiol-17β increased over time in CON, NO-MAS, and TRT-EST cows, but did not increase in TRT-NOEST cows. Cows with clinical mastitis may exhibit estrus and ovulate normally or have disruptions in normal physiology including decreased LH pulsatility, absence of an LH surge and estrous behavior, suppressed estradiol-17β, and failure to ovulate. 相似文献

Amaranth lectin from Amaranthus cruentus seeds was isolated, purified and partially characterized. The purification method used was based on its ability to interact with fetuin. Effects of temperature, pH and buffers and concentration were determined by measurement of lectin hemagglutination activity. Amaranth lectin biological activity was best maintained at temperatures between 4 and 30°C and pH's above or below 5. It was possible to store amaranth lectin at 4°C in acetate buffers, pH 4.8, for prolonged periods and to concentrate it 10-fold by ultrafiltration with only 18% loss of activity. The effects of the Gracilaria domingensis seaweed aqueous extract in comparison with gelatin on the physicochemical, microbial, and textural characteristics of fermented milks processed with the mixed culture SAB 440 A, composed of Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Bifidobacterium animalis ssp. lactis, were investigated. The addition of G. domingensis aqueous extract did not affect pH, titratable acidity, and microbial viability of fermented milks when compared with the control (with no texture modifier) and the products with added gelatin. Fermented milk with added the seaweed aqueous extract showed firmness, consistency, cohesiveness, and viscosity index at least 10% higher than those observed for the control product (P < 0.05). At 4 h of fermentation, the fermented milks with only G. domingensis extract showed a texture comparable to that observed for products containing only gelatin. At 5 h of fermentation, firmness and consistency increased significantly (P < 0.05) in products with only seaweed extract added, a behavior not observed in products with the full amount of gelatin, probably due to the differences between the interactions of these ingredients with casein during the development of the gel network throughout the acidification of milk. The G. domingensis aqueous extract appears as a promising gelatin alternative to be used as texture modifier in fermented milks and related dairy products. 相似文献

The quality of shelled and unshelled macadamia nuts was assessed by means of Fourier transformed near‐infrared (FT‐NIR) spectroscopy. Shelled macadamia nuts were sorted as sound nuts; nuts infected by Ecdytolopha aurantiana and Leucopteara coffeella; and cracked nuts caused by germination. Unshelled nuts were sorted as intact nuts (<10% half nuts, 2014); half nuts (March, 2013; November, 2013); and crushed nuts (2014). Peroxide value (PV) and acidity index (AI) were determined according to AOAC. PCA‐LDA shelled macadamia nuts classification resulted in 93.2% accurate classification. PLS PV prediction model resulted in a square error of prediction (SEP) of 3.45 meq/kg, and a prediction coefficient determination value (Rp2) of 0.72. The AI PLS prediction model was better (SEP = 0.14%, Rp2 = 0.80). Although adequate classification was possible (93.2%), shelled nuts must not contain live insects, therefore the classification accuracy was not satisfactory. BACKGROUND: The chemical composition of Amazonian fish is extremely variable, being influenced by the season and the type and amount of food. A special interest in the fish oil composition has been developed owing to the presence of essential fatty acids, since this is directly related to human health. This study aimed to investigate the fatty acid composition (FAC) of the total lipid (TL), neutral lipid (NL) and phospholipid (PL) fractions of the dorsal muscle and orbital cavity of farmed and wild matrinxã in the Amazon area captured in different seasons. RESULTS: Fatty acids (FA) were analysed by high‐resolution gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Sixty‐five FA were detected in the TL, 66 in the NL and 55 in the PL. The main FA found in farmed and wild fish were oleic, palmitic, stearic and linoleic acids. No distinctions in the quality or quantity of these fractions between dorsal muscle and orbital cavity were found. CONCLUSION: The season had a significant influence on the TL and FAC. Fish captured during the dry season showed lower levels of lipid and a higher percentage of long‐chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. Territorial development in the Cape Verde archipelago under the Estado Novo dictatorship (1953–1974)
Despite Portugal's neutrality in the Second World War (1939–1945), the subsequent new world order meant that the Portuguese Government felt obliged to revise its overseas policies. A new regional awareness could be seen in the Six-Year National Development Plans launched by Estado Novo from 1953 until the revolution of 1974. The territory and its strategic potential were emphasized in the context of national policies of overseas urbanization. Interventions in Cape Verde are visible particularly in the First Development Plan, which was based on equipping the province's public facilities. The methodology of intervention involved setting up missions aimed at planning a set of specific public works which were essential to the development of existing settlements. A sharp increase in the development of the territory through the work of specialized brigades took place in the Third Development Plan, when a set of public works on road, hydraulic and electricity networks was undertaken. The planning of infrastructures that was undertaken in these years was essential to the development of the archipelago and the resulting regional and urban land-use planning of the various islands. 相似文献
