True n-type doping of titanium oxide without formation of midgap states would expand the use of metal oxides for charge-based devices. We demonstrate that plasma-assisted fluorine insertion passivates defect states and that fluorine acts as an n-type donor in titanium oxide. This enabled us to modify the Fermi level and transport properties of titanium oxide outside the limits of O vacancy doping. The origin of the electronic structure modification is explained by ab initio calculation.  相似文献

The palmitoyl pentapeptide palmitoyl-lysine-threonine-threonine-lysine-serine (pal-KTTKS) is a synthetic material that was designed as a topical agent to stimulate collagen production and thus provide a skin anti-wrinkle benefit. To determine if pal-KTTKS is effective, the clinical study reported here was conducted. Caucasian female subjects (n = 93, aged 35-55) participated in a 12-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled, split-face, left-right randomized clinical study assessing two topical products: moisturizer control product vs. the same moisturizer product containing 3 ppm pal-KTTKS. Pal-KTTKS was well tolerated by the skin and provided significant improvement vs. placebo control for reduction in wrinkles/fine lines by both quantitative technical and expert grader image analysis. In self-assessments, subjects also reported significant fine line/wrinkle improvements and noted directional effects for other facial improvement parameters.  相似文献

Studies were done to determine the effectiveness of hot air drying, dry roasting, and oil roasting in killing Salmonella on pecan nutmeats. Pecan halves and pieces were inoculated by immersion in a five-serotype suspension of Salmonella or by surface application of powdered chalk containing the pathogen. Hot air treatment of low-moisture (2.8 to 4.1%) and high-moisture (10.5 to 11.2%) immersion-inoculated nutmeats (initial population, 6.18 to 7.16 log CFU/g) at 120°C for 20 min reduced the number of Salmonella by 1.18 to 1.26 and 1.89 to 2.04 log CFU/g, respectively. However, regardless of the moisture content, hot air treatment of pecan halves containing 0.77 log CFU/g at 120°C for 20 min failed to eliminate Salmonella. Reductions were >7 log CFU/g when dry pieces were dry roasted at 160°C for 15 min. Treatment of halves at 140°C for 20 min, 150°C for 15 min, or 170°C for 10 min reduced Salmonella by 5 log CFU/g. The pathogen was slightly more heat resistant in immersion-inoculated nutmeats than on surface-inoculated nutmeats. Exposure of immersion-inoculated pieces to peanut oil at 127°C for 1.5 min or 132°C for 1.0 min reduced the number of Salmonella by 5 log CFU/g. Treatment of halves at 138°C for 2.0 min reduced Salmonella by 5 log CFU/g; treatment at 132°C for 2.5 to 4.0 min did not always achieve this reduction. Hot air treatment cannot be relied upon to reduce Salmonella by 5 log CFU/g of raw pecan nutmeats without changing sensory qualities. Treatment temperatures and times typically used to oil roast nutmeats appear to be sufficient to reduce Salmonella by 5 log CFU/g.  相似文献

Yarrowia lipolytica, one of the predominant yeasts in raw poultry, is believed to play a role in spoilage. This study was undertaken to investigate treatments to control the growth of Y. lipolytica on raw chicken stored at refrigeration temperature. Raw chicken wings inoculated with a mixture of five strains of Y. lipolytica isolated from raw poultry were dipped in solutions containing 2, 5, or 8% lactic acid, 2% lactic acid containing 0.2, 0.4, or 0.8% potassium sorbate or sodium benzoate, and 4, 8, or 12% trisodium phosphate solution. Populations of the yeast and total aerobic microorganisms were determined before and after treatment. Immersion of wings in 2% lactic acid (with or without 0.2% potassium sorbate or sodium benzoate) or 4% trisodium phosphate caused a significant (alpha = 0.05) reduction in numbers of Y. lipolytica and aerobic microorganisms. Treatment with 2% lactic acid containing 0.4 or 0.8% preservative did not result in additional significant reductions. Treatment of chicken wings with 2% lactic acid or 8% trisodium phosphate significantly reduced numbers of Y. lipolytica by 1.47 and 0.65 log10 cfu/g, respectively, and aerobic microorganisms by 2.60 and 1.21 log10 cfu/g, respectively, compared to controls. Growth of Y. lipolytica on wings stored at 5 degrees C for up to 9 days, however, was not affected by these treatments. Significant reductions in the population of Y. lipolytica occurred when the yeast was inoculated into 100% basil, marjoram, sage, and thyme decoctions, but not in 100% oregano or rosemary decoctions, held at 5 degrees C for 24 h. Treatment of chicken wings with 100% sage or thyme decoctions significantly reduced populations of Y. lipolytica but did not control its growth during storage at 5 degrees C for up to 9 days. The small, temporary decreases in numbers of Y. lipolytica and aerobic microorganisms resulting from immersion treatment of chicken wings with sage and thyme decoctions render these treatments of questionable value as preservation interventions.  相似文献

The Willamette River, one of 14 American Heritage Rivers, flows through the most densely populated and agriculturally productive region of Oregon. Previous biological monitoring of the Willamette River detected elevated frequencies of skeletal deformities in fish from certain areas of the lower (Newberg pool [NP], rivermile [RM] 26 - 55) and middle (Wheatland Ferry [WF], RM 72 - 74) river, relative to those in the upper river (Corvallis [CV], RM 125-138). The objective of this study was to determine the likely cause of these skeletal deformities. In 2002 and 2003, deformity loads in Willamette River fishes were 2-3 times greater at the NP and WF locations than at the CV location. There were some differences in water quality parameters between the NP and CV sites, but they did not readily explain the difference in deformity loads. Concentrations of bioavailable metals were below detection limits (0.6 - 1 microg/ L). Concentrations of bioavailable polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and chlorinated pesticides were generally below 0.25 ng/L. Concentrations of bioavailable polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were generally less than 5 ng/L. Concentrations of most persistent organic pollutants were below detection limits in ovary/oocyte tissue samples and sediments, and those that were detected were not significantly different among sites. Bioassay of Willamette River water extracts provided no evidence that unidentified compounds or the complex mixture of compounds present in the extracts could induce skeletal deformities in cyprinid fish. However, metacercariae of a digenean trematode were directly associated with a large percentage of deformities detected in two Willamette River fishes, and similar deformities were reproduced in laboratoryfathead minnows exposed to cercariae extracted from Willamette River snails. Thus, the weight of evidence suggests that parasitic infection, not chemical contaminants, was the primary cause of skeletal deformities observed in Willamette River fish.  相似文献

An oil tanker loaded with methanol and bunker oil has exploded in November 2004 in Paranaguá Bay, in front of Paranaguá Harbor, southern Brazil. In order to investigate the chronic effects of an oil spill on a resident estuarine fish, the Brazilian silverside Atherinella brasiliensis was sampled 1, 4, and 7 months after the spill, from 2 sites inside Paranaguá Bay, and also from a reference site inside nearby Guaratuba Bay, non-affected by the spill. Increases in plasma osmolality (reaching ~ 525 mOsm/kg H2O, or ~ 70% above values in reference fish) and chloride (reaching 214 mM in site C, or ~ 51% above values in reference fish) were detected 4 months after the spill, in parallel with branchial carbonic anhydrase inhibition (to 56% of the activity measured in reference fish) in silversides obtained from the contaminated sites. Plasma cortisol concentration increased progressively in samples from fish obtained 4 (462 ng/mL) and 7 (564-650 ng/mL) months after the spill, when compared to values in reference fish (192 ng/mL). Osmoregulation of a resident estuarine fish is still affected by an oil spill, months after the accident. It is, thus, a sensitive tool for the evaluation of the chronic effects of oil spills inside tropical estuarine systems, and A. brasiliensis is proposed as an adequate sentinel species for monitoring protocols.  相似文献

The scope of this study was the removal of ammonium by ion exchange from simulated wastewater. The study looks at the effect of organics upon ammonium ion exchange equilibrium uptake. The ion exchangers included a natural zeolite clinoptilolite, and two polymeric exchangers, Dowex 50w-x8, and Purolite MN500. The organic compounds studied included citric acid and a number of proteins. The traditional method for removal of ammonium and organic pollutants from wastewater is biological treatment, but ion exchange offers a number of advantages including the ability to handle shock loadings and the ability to operate over a wider range of temperatures. The results show that in most of the cases studied, the presence of organic compounds enhances the uptake of ammonium ion onto the ion exchangers.  相似文献
