Despite explicit legal and policy commitments, many South African residents do not have reliable access to potable water. Resident dissatisfaction with municipal water service delivery is evidenced by frequent civil protests. We consider how gathering and understanding the lived experiences of citizens could influence official responses to water interruptions. We take a transdisciplinary, problem-focussed, research approach to the experience of, and responses to, water interruptions, reflecting on the limitations of research to effect change in the lived experience. As transdisciplinary research praxis increasingly seeks expression in social outcomes, it is vital to confront both opportunities and limitations.  相似文献

This paper analyses the performance of the main radial basis functions in the formulation of the Boundary Element Method (DIBEM). This is an alternative for solving problems modeled by non-adjoint differential operators, since it transforms domain integrals in boundary integrals using radial basis functions. The solution of eigenvalue problem was chosen to performance evaluation. Natural frequencies are calculated numerically using several radial functions and their accuracy is evaluated by comparison with the available analytical solutions and with the Finite Element Method as well. The standard radial basis functions have presented similar performance to compact radial functions, being even slightly superior.  相似文献

The effect of UV-C and visible light on the enzyme polyphenoloxidase was studied in model systems and food. Enzyme inactivation under non thermal conditions was achieved following both UV-C and visible light exposure. UV-C light promoted enzyme inactivation in the entire range of irradiance and exposure time tested whilst visible light was effective only at high doses since lower intensity treatments were associated to enzyme activation. Polyphenoloxidase inactivation upon UV-C light exposure occurred as a consequence of protein aggregations other than those derived from thermal denaturation.The possibility to apply UV-C light exposure to achieve enzymatic stability of clear apple juice and fresh-cut apple slices was studied. Polyphenoloxidase inactivation in apple juice occurred to the detriment of natural occurring phenols which independently underwent photo oxidation. However, UV-C light exposure for few min prevented enzymatic browning during storage of refrigerated apple slices. The latter resulted comparable to the untreated apple slices from the sensory point of view.

Industrial relevance

Light irradiation is very effective in promoting polyphenoloxidase inactivation. UV-C light treatment has a good potential of successful application to achieve enzymatic stability in fresh-cut vegetables under non thermal conditions.  相似文献

Thirty-two lambs were fed with barley straw supplemented by a concentrate alone, or a concentrate enriched with either vitamin E (VITE006: 0.6 g kg−1 feed concentrate) or carnosic acid (CARN006: 0.6 g kg−1 feed concentrate; or CARN012: 1.2 g kg−1 feed concentrate). In order to elucidate the influence of the dietary supplementation of carnosic compared with a reference diet antioxidant (vitamin E), the animals were slaughtered and the longissimus thoracis were lyophilised to determine the FAs profile and the phenolic compounds. In addition, longissimus lumborum slices were stored in a modified atmosphere package for 3 days and then grilled to determine volatile compounds. Dietary carnosic acid did not modify the FAs profile, but had a clear effect on the production of volatile compounds, in a dose-dependent manner. These results have implications for the food industry, since dietary carnosic acid seems to extend the shelf life of lamb meat.  相似文献

The effect of pulsed light on the inactivation of polyphenoloxidase (PPO) in model solutions was investigated focusing on the effect of enzyme concentration and total energy dose of the treatment. PPO inactivation increased with the dose of the treatment. Complete enzyme inactivation was achieved by pulsed light doses higher than 8.75 J cm?2. At low PPO concentrations (4 to 10 U), the enzyme resulted highly inactivated by pulsed light treatment. Further increase in enzyme units determined a progressive decrease in PPO inactivation. The latter was attributed to protein structural modifications including cleavage and unfolding/aggregation phenomena. PPO amounts higher than 10 U probably favoured enzyme conformations that were less prone to intermolecular rearrangements leading to inactivation.  相似文献
