The deformation response of random grain boundary networks as a function of temperature and strain rate is explored using molecular dynamics atomistic simulations and an embedded atom method interatomic potential. We find that deformation at higher temperatures promotes both dislocation emission and grain boundary accommodation processes. The results allow estimating the activation energies and volumes for the deformation process. We find activation energy values for the deformation process similar to those for grain boundary diffusion and activation volumes consistent with an atomic shuffling mechanism. Our results suggest a picture of the deformation process as governed by the combination of the applied stress and thermally activated processes. 相似文献

Introduction: A reliable method of intradialysis calcium mass balance quantification is far from been established. We herein investigated the use of a single‐pool variable‐volume Calcium kinetic model to assess calcium mass balance in chronic and stable dialysis patients. Methods: Thirty‐four patients on thrice‐weekly HD were studied during 240 dialysis sessions. All patients were dialyzed with a nominal total calcium concentration of 1.50 mmol/L. The main assumption of the model is that the calcium distribution volume is equal to the extracellular volume during dialysis. This hypothesis is assumed valid if measured and predicted end dialysis plasma water ionized calcium concentrations are equal. A difference between predicted and measured end‐dialysis ionized plasma water calcium concentration is a deviation on our main hypothesis, meaning that a substantial amount of calcium is exchanged between the extracellular volume and a nonmodeled compartment. Findings: The difference between predicted and measured values was 0.02 mmol/L (range ?0.08:0.16 mmol/L). With a mean ionized dialysate calcium concentration of 1.25 mmol/L, calcium mass balance was on average negative (mean ± SD ?0.84 ± 1.33 mmol, range ?5.42:2.75). Predialysis ionized plasma water concentration and total ultrafiltrate were the most important predictors of calcium mass balance. A significant mobilization of calcium from the extracellular pool to a nonmodeled pool was calculated in a group of patients. Discussion: The proposed single pool variable‐volume Calcium kinetic model is adequate for prediction and quantification of intradialysis calcium mass balance, it can evaluate the eventual calcium transfer outside the extracellular pool in clinical practice. 相似文献

Introduction: Compared to traditional in‐center hemodialysis (HD), in‐center nocturnal dialysis (INHD) is characterized by longer sessions and nighttime administration, which may lead to better outcomes for some patients. Given the importance of patient choice in the decision to initiate INHD, we explored associations between patients’ psychosocial characteristics and their receipt of INHD. Methods: Among hemodialysis patients at a medium‐sized dialysis organization, we identified INHD patients as those for whom ≥80% of dialysis sessions were INHD sessions—starting at 6:30 pm or later and lasting ≥5 hours—over the 3 months (≥20 sessions total) after their first INHD session. We extracted dialysis session data from electronic medical records and psychosocial data from social worker assessments. We tested associations of patients’ psychosocial characteristics—as well as demographic and clinical characteristics—with INHD receipt among all hemodialysis patients (INHD and HD) in bivariate analyses and multivariable logistic regression models. Findings: Among 759 patients with complete data, we identified 47 (6.2%) as INHD patients. On average, these patients were more likely than HD patients to be employed (full‐time 10.6% vs. 5.2%; part‐time 17.0% vs. 4.2%; P < 0.001), and they were significantly less likely to require ambulatory assistance (14.9% vs. 39.6%, P < 0.001). In multivariable regressions, we found that part‐time employment (versus being unemployed) was associated with a 7.1 percentage‐point higher likelihood of being an INHD patient (P = 0.01), and the negative association with ambulatory assistance needs approached statistical significance (P = 0.056). No other psychosocial factors included in this main regression analysis were statistically significantly associated with INHD patient status. Discussion: Researchers comparing the outcomes of patients undergoing INHD versus other treatment modalities will need to account for differences in employment status—and other factors like requiring ambulatory assistance and age which may predict the ability to work—between INHD users and comparison patients to avoid bias in estimates. 相似文献

The generation of free radical intermediates as a result of the oxidative degradation of lipid molecules during the heating of grape seed oil has been established by a combination of “spin trapping” and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The effects of temperature on the rates of formation and decomposition of the adduct with the spin trapN-t-butyl-α-phenylnitrone (PBN) have been investigated over the temperature range 105–180°C. Tested the hypothesis that the effects of 4th ventricle bombesin (BN) injection on feeding require interaction with forebrain neural systems by measuring intraoral sucrose (0.1 M) in tube-fed control and tube-fed supracollicular decerebrate rats after 4th ventricle injections of 1, 5, 10, 20, and 50 ng BN. Fourth ventricle injections of all doses of BN reliably suppressed sucrose intake in both control and chronic decerebrate rats. Reviews the book, The power of countertransference: Innovations in analytic technique by Karen J. Maroda (see record 1994-98465-000). This is a remarkable and provocative book. On first examination, I thought it was going to be another diatribe against psychoanalytic theory and practice. In the introduction and first chapter, which Maroda entitles: "The Myth of Authority," she points out all of the flaws that she sees in the typical attitude of psychoanalytically oriented analysts. She criticizes the so-called "neutrality" of the analytic position, the authoritarian position of the analyst and the excess emphasis of interpretation as the most critical aspect of the "cure" in psychoanalysis. The rest of the book, however, focuses on countertransference techniques; that is, how to accomplish the countertransference. Maroda's clinical vignettes and technical discussions are detailed and useful. Although one might take issue with some specific clinical points, her discussion is well formulated and her case well argued. This is a rather brief and, at first blush, simple book. It is, however, an important statement of a position on countertransference that is both ground breaking, and a careful exposition. Habituation is a simple form of memory, yet its neurobiological mechanisms are only beginning to be understood in mammals. In the olfactory system, the neural correlates of habituation at a fast experimental timescale involving very short intertrial intervals (tens of seconds) have been shown to depend on synaptic adaptation in olfactory cortex. In contrast, behavioral habituation to odorants on a longer timescale with intertrial intervals of several minutes depends on processes in the olfactory bulb, as demonstrated by pharmacological studies. We here show that behavioral habituation to odorants on this longer timescale has a neuronal activity correlate in the olfactory bulb. Spiking responses of mitral cells in the rat olfactory bulb adapt to, and recover from, repeated odorant stimulation with 5-min intertrial intervals with a time course similar to that of behavioral habituation. Moreover, both the behavioral and neuronal effects of odor habituation require functioning N-methyl-d-aspartic acid receptors in the olfactory bulb.
