A simple model of mode partition noise is developed, which is valid for semiconductor lasers operating CW, having a single active region and oscillating primarily in one dominant mode. It is shown that the intensity fluctuations in the nonlasing modes occur with characteristic times of a few nanoseconds and have exponential probability distributions. We show that the lasing mode is able to follow adiabatically fluctuations in the nonlasing modes in such a way that the total intensity remains constant. Our model quantitatively accounts for the observations of Linke et al. that the frequency of "dropouts" in the lasing-mode intensity decreases exponentially with the ratio of average intensities of the lasing and nonlasing modes, and that in digital communication applications a ratio of about 50 is required to reduce the resulting bit-error probability tolsim 10^{-9}. We also account for the probability distribution of the lasing-mode intensity, which was observed by Liu et al to be exponential at low intensity and Gaussian at high intensity. The exponential fluctuations constitute partition noise induced in the lasing mode by large Gaussian fluctuations in the field amplitude of the nonlasing mode. Additional noise sources associated with the carrier density and the lasing-mode field produce Gaussian behavior at high intensities plus a negligible broadening of the low-intensity exponential tail.  相似文献

Tyrosine phosphorylation has been shown to be an important modulator of synaptic transmission in both vertebrates and invertebrates. Such findings hint toward the existence of extracellular ligands capable of activating this widely represented signaling mechanism at or close to the synapse. Examples of such ligands are the peptide growth factors which, on binding, activate receptor tyrosine kinases. To gain insight into the physiological consequences of receptor tyrosine kinase activation in squid giant synapse, a series of growth factors was tested in this preparation. Electrophysiological, pharmacological, and biochemical analysis demonstrated that nerve growth factor (NGF) triggers an acute and specific reduction of the postsynaptic potential amplitude, without affecting the presynaptic spike generation or presynaptic calcium current. The NGF target is localized at a postsynaptic site and involves a new TrkA-like receptor. The squid receptor crossreacts with antibodies generated against mammalian TrkA, is tyrosine phosphorylated in response to NGF stimulation, and is blocked by specific pharmacological inhibitors. The modulation described emphasizes the important role of growth factors on invertebrate synaptic transmission.  相似文献

Treatment of Swiss 3T3 cells with cytotoxic necrotizing factor 1 (CNF1) from Escherichia coli and dermonecrotic toxin (DNT) from Bordetella bronchiseptica, which directly target and activate p21(rho), stimulated tyrosine phosphorylation of focal adhesion kinase (p125(fak)) and paxillin. Tyrosine phosphorylation induced by CNF1 and DNT occurred after a pronounced lag period (2 h), and was blocked by either lysosomotrophic agents or incubation at 22 degrees C. CNF1 and DNT stimulated tyrosine phosphorylation of p125(fak) and paxillin, actin stress fiber formation, and focal adhesion assembly with similar kinetics. Cytochalasin D and high concentrations of platelet-derived growth factor disrupted the actin cytoskeleton and completely inhibited CNF1 and DNT induced tyrosine phosphorylation. Microinjection of Clostridium botulinum C3 exoenzyme which ADP-ribosylates and inactivates p21(rho) function, prevented tyrosine phosphorylation of focal adhesion proteins in response to either CNF1 or DNT. In addition, our results demonstrated that CNF1 and DNT do not induce protein kinase C activation, inositol phosphate formation, and Ca2+ mobilization. Moreover, CNF1 and DNT stimulated DNA synthesis without activation of p42(mapk) and p44(mapk) providing additional evidence for a novel p21(rho)-dependent signaling pathway that leads to entry into the S phase of the cell cycle in Swiss 3T3.  相似文献

RNA interference (RNAi) was discovered at the end of last millennium, changing the way scientists understood regulation of gene expression. Within the following two decades, a variety of different RNAi mechanisms were found in eukaryotes, reflecting the evolutive diversity that RNAi entails. The essential silencing mechanism consists of an RNase III enzyme called Dicer that cleaves double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) generating small interfering RNAs (siRNAs), a hallmark of RNAi. These siRNAs are loaded into the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) triggering the cleavage of complementary messenger RNAs by the Argonaute protein, the main component of the complex. Consequently, the expression of target genes is silenced. This mechanism has been thoroughly studied in fungi due to their proximity to the animal phylum and the conservation of the RNAi mechanism from lower to higher eukaryotes. However, the role and even the presence of RNAi differ across the fungal kingdom, as it has evolved adapting to the particularities and needs of each species. Fungi have exploited RNAi to regulate a variety of cell activities as different as defense against exogenous and potentially harmful DNA, genome integrity, development, drug tolerance, or virulence. This pathway has offered versatility to fungi through evolution, favoring the enormous diversity this kingdom comprises.  相似文献

The study of the Mucoralean fungi physiology is a neglected field that the lack of effective genetic tools has hampered in the past. However, the emerging fungal infection caused by these fungi, known as mucormycosis, has prompted many researchers to study the pathogenic potential of Mucorales. The main reasons for this current attraction to study mucormycosis are its high lethality, the lack of effective antifungal drugs, and its recent increased incidence. The most contemporary example of the emergence character of mucormycosis is the epidemics declared in several Asian countries as a direct consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic. Fortunately, this pressure to understand mucormycosis and develop new treatment strategies has encouraged the blossoming of new genetic techniques and methodologies. This review describes the history of genetic manipulation in Mucorales, highlighting the development of methods and how they allowed the main genetic studies in these fungi. Moreover, we have emphasized the recent development of new genetic models to study mucormycosis, a landmark in the field that will configure future research related to this disease.  相似文献

The kinetics of electroless copper deposition onto non-metallic substrates have been examined at controlled potentials, using a rotating disc vitreous carbon electrode. The overall plating rate has been shown to be limited by the rate of the partial anodic process. The parameters controlling this retardation have been identified, and a model for the growth of electroless copper from active sites on the non-metallic surface has been suggested.  相似文献

Time-resolved Fourier optical diffuse tomography is a novel approach for imaging of objects in a highly scattering turbid medium with use of an incident (near) plane wave. The theory of the propagation of spatial Fourier components of the scattered wave field is presented, along with a fast algorithm for three-dimensional reconstruction in a parallel planar geometry. Examples of successful reconstructions of simulated hidden absorptive or scattering objects embedded inside a human-tissue-like semi-infinite turbid medium are provided.  相似文献

Recently we have reported structural transformation features of SnO(2) upon initial charging using a configuration that leads to the sequential lithiation of SnO(2) nanowire from one end to the other (Huang et al. Science2010, 330, 1515). A key question to be addressed is the lithiation behavior of the nanowire when it is fully soaked into the electrolyte (Chiang Science2010, 330, 1485). This Letter documents the structural characteristics of SnO(2) upon initial charging based on a battery assembled with a single nanowire anode, which is fully soaked (immersed) into an ionic liquid based electrolyte using in situ transmission electron microscopy. It has been observed that following the initial charging the nanowire retained a wire shape, although highly distorted. The originally straight wire is characterized by a zigzag structure following the phase transformation, indicating that during the phase transformation of SnO(2) + Li ? Li(x)Sn + Li(y)O, the nanowire was subjected to severe deformation, as similarly observed for the case when the SnO(2) was charged sequentially from one end to the other. Transmission electron microscopy imaging revealed that the Li(x)Sn phase possesses a spherical morphology and is embedded into the amorphous Li(y)O matrix, indicating a simultaneous partitioning and coarsening of Li(x)Sn through Sn and Li diffusion in the amorphous matrix accompanied the phase transformation. The presently observed composite configuration gives detailed information on the structural change and how this change takes place on nanometer scale.  相似文献
