Mathematical modelling of a hydrocracking reactor for triglyceride conversion to biofuel: model establishment and validation

In the study, a 2D, non‐isothermal, heterogeneous model of a triglyceride hydrocracking reactor is investigated. The internal heat and mass transfer within the phases in the reactor were considered using the film theory. The conservation equations for energy and mass were solved simultaneously using appropriate numerical techniques whose reliability was assessed by comparison of the results with previously reported experimental data. The modelling was performed with consideration of two proposed hydrocracking kinetic models. The model predictions showed reasonable correlation with published experimental data and conversion rates. The calculations indicated that at feed temperature of 380 °C, liquid hourly space velocity of 8 h?1 and hydrogen : feed ratio of 1500:1, the total triglyceride conversion was 82.54% for four major classes of hydrocarbons (light, middle, heavy and oligomerised). In addition, the concentration distribution and temperature profile along the reactor were investigated. The product concentrations along the reactor show that higher rates of production at the beginning of the reactor were achieved because of high concentration of triglyceride due to the exothermic hydrocracking reactions and counter‐current flow modes of triglyceride and hydrogen; a jump of 90 °C was shown at the beginning of the reactor temperature profile. Using Gray and McNaughton's (2000) revised reinforcement sensitivity theory (r-RST), we examined the influence of personality on processing of words presented in gain-framed and loss-framed anti-speeding messages and how the processing biases associated with personality influenced message acceptance. The r-RST predicts that the nervous system regulates personality and that behaviour is dependent upon the activation of the behavioural activation system (BAS), activated by reward cues and the fight-flight-freeze system (FFFS), activated by punishment cues. According to r-RST, individuals differ in the sensitivities of their BAS and FFFS (i.e., weak to strong), which in turn leads to stable patterns of behaviour in the presence of rewards and punishments, respectively. It was hypothesised that individual differences in personality (i.e., strength of the BAS and the FFFS) would influence the degree of both message processing (as measured by reaction time to previously viewed message words) and message acceptance (measured three ways by perceived message effectiveness, behavioural intentions, and attitudes). Specifically, it was anticipated that, individuals with a stronger BAS would process the words presented in the gain-frame messages faster than those with a weaker BAS and individuals with a stronger FFFS would process the words presented in the loss-frame messages faster than those with a weaker FFFS. Further, it was expected that greater processing (faster reaction times) would be associated with greater acceptance for that message. Driver licence holding students (N = 108) were recruited to view one of four anti-speeding messages (i.e., social gain-frame, social loss-frame, physical gain-frame, and physical loss-frame). A computerised lexical decision task assessed participants’ subsequent reaction times to message words, as an indicator of the extent of processing of the previously viewed message. Self-report measures assessed personality and the three message acceptance measures. As predicted, the degree of initial processing of the content of the social gain-framed message mediated the relationship between the reward sensitive trait and message effectiveness. Initial processing of the physical loss-framed message partially mediated the relationship between the punishment sensitive trait and both message effectiveness and behavioural intention ratings. These results show that reward sensitivity and punishment sensitivity traits influence cognitive processing of gain-framed and loss-framed message content, respectively, and subsequently, message effectiveness and behavioural intention ratings. Specifically, a range of road safety messages (i.e., gain-frame and loss-frame messages) could be designed which align with the processing biases associated with personality and which would target those individuals who are sensitive to rewards and those who are sensitive to punishments. 相似文献

Confronted with the contemporary challenges of maximising energy efficiency with minimal impact on the environment, the automotive industry has developed various technologies to tackle them. Most of these technologies, however, have wider implications on the tribological performance of the automotive engines due to resultant soot build-up. This paper reviews the effects that attempts by stakeholders to satisfy requirements for reduced fuel consumption, reduced emissions and extended service intervals have had on increasing soot levels to an extent that can lead to engine component failure. Three areas have been identified that have either not been explored or not widely explored in the study of automotive soot namely: numerical simulation and modelling of soot wear, soot effects on wear of actual engine components and the wear and friction performance of non-metallic materials used in internal combustion engines. Problem: The future of compact development depends in part on understanding and shaping the public's attitudes toward it. Previous studies have suggested life cycle, socioeconomic, attitudinal, and ideological dimensions to preferences regarding development patterns, but rarely have all of these factors been examined systematically across a broad, generalizable sample of respondents. Purpose: To examine public attitudes toward compact development, we asked survey respondents to weigh four important tradeoffs between compact and sprawling growth. We assess the relative influence of a variety of individual characteristics on these attitudes. Methods: We use results from two large-scale, randomized telephone surveys, one conducted in California in 2002 and the other in four other southwestern states in 2007. Using logistic regression, we assess which personal characteristics are associated with stated preferences regarding compact development, and illustrate their degree of influence. Results and conclusions: Support for the compact development alternatives is significant, in some cases exceeding support for traditional, decentralized suburban patterns. However, question wording appears to matter considerably, and individuals’ beliefs about different facets of compact development are often inconsistent. Although race, income, age, and the presence of children in the household are strongly associated with some views on the four tradeoffs, only political ideology is consistently associated with opposition to compact development. Takeaway for practice: The significant support evident for compact development may not translate into actual housing choices unless local governments and lenders do more to support the production of such housing and neighborhood environments. If, as our results suggest, a major constituency for transit-oriented and mixed-use projects is low income residents, renters, and minorities, then well crafted urban infill projects that take into account the needs of these groups will help fulfill the potential of smart growth. Advocates might also frame compact development to appeal more to political conservatives. The high hardness and excellent high-temperature performance of ceramics are attractive for critical rolling-bearing applications, such as in high-thermal-efficiency engines. In addition, the lower density of ceramics permits lower centrifugal loads, less skidding at high speeds, and, consequently, results in longer bearing component life than conventional bearing steels or alternative super-alloys or cermets. Silicon nitride has the lowest friction and elastic modulus of the available ceramics, which reduce bearing contact stresses. This paper reviews the merits and demerits of silicon nitride as a bearing material, its processing, and different mechanisms for solid-lubricant replenishment in severe environments. We present a novel market-based method, inspired by retail markets, for resource allocation in fully decentralised systems
where agents are self-interested. Our market mechanism requires no coordinating node or complex negotiation. The stability
of outcome allocations, those at equilibrium, is analysed and compared for three buyer behaviour models. In order to capture
the interaction between self-interested agents, we propose the use of competitive coevolution. Our approach is both highly
scalable and may be tuned to achieve specified outcome resource allocations. We demonstrate the behaviour of our approach
in simulation, where evolutionary market agents act on behalf of service providing nodes to adaptively price their resources over time, in response to market conditions.
We show that this leads the system to the predicted outcome resource allocation. Furthermore, the system remains stable in
the presence of small changes in price, when buyers’ decision functions degrade gracefully. 相似文献

Human hands sweat in different circumstances and the presence of sweat can alter the friction between the hand and contacting
surface. It is, therefore, important to understand how hand moisture varies between people, during different activities and
the effect of this on friction. In this study, a survey of fingertip moisture was done. Friction tests were then carried out
to investigate the effect of moisture. Moisture was added to the surface of the finger, the finger was soaked in water, and
water was added to the counter-surface; the friction of the contact was then measured. It was found that the friction increased,
up until a certain level of moisture and then decreased. The increase in friction has previously been explained by viscous
shearing, water absorption and capillary adhesion. The results from the experiments enabled the mechanisms to be investigated
analytically. This study found that water absorption is the principle mechanism responsible for the increase in friction,
followed by capillary adhesion, although it was not conclusively proved that this contributes significantly. Both these mechanisms
increase friction by increasing the area of contact and therefore adhesion. Viscous shearing in the liquid bridges has negligible
effect. There are, however, many limitations in the modelling that need further exploration. 相似文献

The Bezout–Dixon resultant method for solving systems of polynomial equations lends itself to various heuristic acceleration techniques, previously reported by the present author, which can be extraordinarily effective. In this paper we will discuss how well these techniques apply to the Macaulay resultant. BACKGROUND: In the FRISC trial, dalteparin 120 IU/kg body weight twice daily for unstable coronary artery disease was safe and reduced the risk of new coronary events. This risk reduction was maintained during the following extended treatment with a fixed dose of 7500 IU dalteparin once daily. METHODS AND RESULTS: Minor bleeding was more frequent in women compared with men: relative risk (CI) 2.88 (1.78 to 4.67) during the weight-adjusted and 2.36 (1.37 to 2.63) during the fixed dose treatment. The anti-Xa activity determined in samples (n = 175) obtained during the acute phase treatment was higher in women compared with men (P <.001) and in nonsmokers compared with smokers (<.001) in multiple regression analysis. Also, during the fixed-dose treatment (n = 131) an independent relation between anti-Xa activity and sex (P <.001), but not smoking habits, persisted. CONCLUSION: To improve future low-molecular-weight heparin dose regimens for the treatment of acute coronary syndromes, it might be important to consider the influence of sex and smoking habits. 相似文献
