Attraction of moth species of Tortricidae,Gelechiidae, Geometridae,Drepanidae, Pyralidae,and Gracillariidae families to field traps baited with conjugated dienes

Field surveys of a series of conjugated diunsaturated straight-chain primary alcohols, acetates, and aldehydes (dienes), including the 3,5-dode-cadienyl, 8,10-dodecadienyl, 3,5-tetradecadienyl, 8,10-tetradecadienyl, 9,11-tetradecadienyl, and 10,12-tetradecadienyl primary alcohols, acetates, and most aldehydes, and the related monounsaturated straight-chain primary alcohols, acetates, and aldehydes (monoenes), including the 3-dodecadienyl alcohol and acetates, attracted the following species from the title families. Diene attractants have been demonstrated for at least onePhyllonorycter sp.,Chionodes lugubrella (Fabr.),Leptostales ferruminaria (Zell.),Drepana bilineata (Pack.),Pyrausta fodinalis (Led.),Notocelia purpurissatana Heinr.,Phaneta alterana Heinr. Monoene attractants were demonstrated forHedya separatana (Kft.),Cydia fletcherana (Kft.),Barbara mappana Free.,Ancylis burgessiana (Zell.),Ancylis nubeculana Clem.,Evippe prunifoliella Cham.,Phlyctaenia coronata tertialis (Gn.), aChionodes sp., a Gelechiidae sp., and an unidentifiedPhyllonorycter sp. Replicated field experiments showed attraction-inhibition relationships for most species. Electroantennagram data are presented forLeptostales ferruminaria andDrepana bilineata.     

Determination of naphthalene-2,3-dicarboxaldehyde-labeled amino acids by open tubular liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection

Naphthalene-2,3-dicarboxaldehyde (NDA) has been investigated as a new derivatizing reagent for the electrochemical detection of tagged amino acids. Gradient elution allowed for the separation of 18 NDA-derivatized amino acids on an open tubular liquid chromatography column in less than 50 min. Gradient elution and electrochemical detection were found to be compatible. A detection limit of 36 amol was obtained for the asparagine-NDA derivative. The usefulness of this technique for quantitation was demonstrated by the analysis of the NDA-tagged hydrolysis products from bovine chymotrypsinogen.     

Evidence for two types of spatial representations: Hemispheric specialization for categorical and coordinate relations.

Analyses of human object recognition abilities led to the hypothesis that 2 kinds of spatial relation representations are used in human vision. Evidence for the distinction between abstract categorical spatial relation representations and specific coordinate spatial relation representations was provided in 4 experiments. These results indicate that Ss make categorical judgments—on/off, left/right, and above/below—faster when stimuli are initially presented to the left cerebral hemisphere, whereas they make evaluations of distance—in relation to 2 mm, 3 mm, or 1 in. (2.54 cm)—faster when stimuli are initially presented to the right cerebral hemisphere. In addition, there was evidence that categorical representations developed with practice. The multi-effect boiling desalting system and its comparison with the multi-stage flash system

The basic characteristics of the multi-effect boiling (MEB) desalination system are presented. Recent developments are considered, and a thermodynamic analysis and evaluation of the heat transfer areas required for the MEB system are given. In comparing the heat transfer areas, water pretreatment and salt concentration, pumping power requirement and stability of the MEB and multi-stage flash (MSF) systems, MEB seems to have definite advantages over MSF. However, in the absence of well-proven large capacity MEB units, and in view of the good experience with and reliability of MSF systems, large producers of desalted water favor continued installation of MSF systems.
