In this study, the authors examined the extent to which children’s self-regulation upon kindergarten entrance and classroom quality in kindergarten contributed to children’s adaptive classroom behavior. Children’s self-regulation was assessed using a direct assessment upon entrance into kindergarten. Classroom quality was measured on the basis of multiple classroom observations during the kindergarten year. Children’s adaptive classroom behavior in kindergarten was assessed through teacher report and classroom observations: Teachers rated children’s cognitive and behavioral self-control and work habits during the spring of the kindergarten year; observers rated children’s engagement and measured off-task behavior at 2-month intervals from November to May. Hierarchical linear models revealed that children’s self-regulation upon school entry in a direct assessment related to teachers’ report of behavioral self-control, cognitive self-control, and work habits in the spring of the kindergarten year. Classroom quality, particularly teachers’ effective classroom management, was linked to children’s greater behavioral and cognitive self-control, children’s higher behavioral engagement, and less time spent off-task in the classroom. Classroom quality did not moderate the relation between children’s self-regulation upon school entry and children’s adaptive classroom behaviors in kindergarten. The discussion considers the implications of classroom management for supporting children’s early development of behavioral skills that are important in school settings. This study examined whether mothers' preoccupation with their own weight and eating was linked to daughters' restrained eating behavior. Participants included 173 non-Hispanic, White mother-daughter dyads, measured longitudinally when daughters were ages 5, 7, 9, and 11. Mothers who were preoccupied with their own weight and eating reported higher levels of restricting daughters' intake and encouraging daughters to lose weight over time. Mothers' encouragement of daughters' weight loss was linked to daughters' restrained eating behavior; this relationship was partially mediated by daughters' perception of maternal pressure to lose weight. These findings suggest that mothers' preoccupation with weight and eating, via attempts to influence daughters' weight and eating, may place daughters at risk for developing problematic eating behaviors. Characterizing perceived injustice as a form of stress, we examined the main and interactive relationships among interactional, procedural, and distributive injustice and psychological strain while controlling for job insecurity. Using moderated multiple regression analysis with a sample of 1,083 government employees, we show that interactional, procedural, and distributive injustice are all unique predictors of psychological strain that account for significant unique variance beyond that explained by job insecurity. Those individuals who perceive more interactional, procedural, or distributive injustice at work reported a higher degree of strain. However, there were no significant interactive effects, suggesting that these three categories of perceived injustice do not interact to predict symptoms of psychological strain. Recombivax-HB (REC) and Engerix-B (ENG) are FDA-approved vaccines for hepatitis B virus (HBV) in end-stage renal disease (ESRD). This study compares antibody response rates between them in routine clinical practice. Patients completing the recommended 40 mug dose of REC (3 doses) or ENG (4 doses) between January 1, 2000 to April 30, 2003 were eligible. Patients with prior positive HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) or antibody (HBsAb) test results were excluded. The conversion rate and persistence of protective titer (HBsAb titer>or=10 IU/mL) were tracked for 1 year. A supplemental analysis of a one-to-one matched patient sample was also performed. REC patients (N=885) were older, had longer dialysis vintage, and had a larger proportion of whites than ENG patients (N=13,661). Cumulative conversion response was greater in ENG (58%) than REC (40%) at 1 year (p<0.0001). The odds ratio for response to ENG compared with REC was 1.96 (95% limits: 1.56, 2.45; p<0.0001) adjusted for age, gender, race, diabetes, vintage, BSA, hemoglobin, and eKt/V. Persistent protective HBsAb after 1 year was 77% (ENG) vs. 53% (REC). HBsAg was positive in 208 ENG patients (1.5%) with all but 1 because of transient, vaccine-related antigenemia. The difference in conversion response favoring ENG persisted in a one-to-one sample matched for age, gender, race, modality, and dialysis vintage. The study found higher seroconversion response to ENG compared with REC at several time points up to 1 year. Protective HBsAb disappeared in 23-47% of patients 1 year later, validating CDC recommendations to re-test HBsAb yearly. The observed difference in response rates may be related to the extra ENG dose given at the second month (0, 1, 2, 6 regimen). The study raises a hypothesis that requires confirmation in a prospective clinical trial.  相似文献

Age-related differences in brain activity mediating face recognition were examined using positron emission tomography. Participants encoded faces using a pleasant-unpleasant judgement, a right-left orientation task, and intentional learning. Scans also were obtained during recognition. Both young and old groups showed significant effects of encoding task on recognition accuracy, but older adults showed reduced accuracy overall. Increased brain activity in older adults was similar to that seen in young adults during conditions associated with deeper processing, but was reduced during the shallow encoding and recognition conditions. Differential correlations of brain activity and behavior were found that suggest older adults use unique neural systems to facilitate face memory. This article develops and tests a structurally based, integrated theory of person-team fit. The theory developed is an extension of structural contingency theory and considers issues of external fit simultaneously with its examination of internal fit at the team level. Results from 80 teams working on an interdependent team task indicate that divisional structures demand high levels of cognitive ability on the part of teammembers. However, the advantages of high cognitive ability in divisional structures are neutralized when there is poor external fit between the structure and the environment. Instead, emotional stability becomes a critical factor among teammembers when a divisional structure is out of alignment with its environment. This randomized controlled trial evaluated the efficacy of a brief intervention designed to reduce the harmful consequences of heavy drinking among high-risk college students. Students screened for risk while in their senior year of high school (188 women and 160 men) were randomly assigned to receive an individualized motivational brief intervention in their freshman year of college or to a no-treatment control condition. A normative group selected from the entire screening pool provided a natural history comparison. Follow-up assessments over a 2-year period showed significant reductions in both drinking rates and harmful consequences, favoring students receiving the intervention. Although high-risk students continued to experience more alcohol problems than the natural history comparison group over the 2-year period, most showed a decline in problems over time, suggesting a developmental maturational effect. Two projects explored the links between language use and aging. In the first project, written or spoken text samples from disclosure studies from over 3,000 research participants from 45 different studies representing 21 laboratories in 3 countries were analyzed to determine how people change in their use of 14 text dimensions as a function of age. A separate project analyzed the collected works of 10 well-known novelists, playwrights, and poets who lived over the last 500 years. Both projects found that with increasing age, individuals use more positive and fewer negative affect words, use fewer self-references, use more future-tense and fewer past-tense verbs, and demonstrate a general pattern of increasing cognitive complexity.
