A series of experiments by the authors assumes that many people in our society are motivated to aid others who are dependent upon them because such help is prescribed by a "social responsibility norm." The present study also assumes that prior help can increase the salience of this norm. In a 2 X 2 X 2 factorial design using 80 Ss (college women), ? of the Ss were individually helped by a peer (E's confederate) on a preliminary task, while the others were not aided. After this, the Ss worked on another task under the supposed supervision of yet another peer, with ? of the Ss being told the supervisor was highly dependent upon their work and the others told she was less dependent upon them. The 1st peer would supposedly learn of their work in ? of the cases but not in the other ?. The previously helped Ss tended to exert the greatest effort in behalf of their dependent peer. A self-report scale assessing social responsibility tendencies was significantly correlated with the effort measure in the Prior Help-High Dependency condition. This study reports a randomized controlled trial evaluation of a computer-based balanced literacy intervention, ABRACADABRA (http://grover.concordia.ca/abra/version1/abracadabra.html). Children (N = 144) in Grade 1 were exposed either to computer activities for word analysis, text comprehension, and fluency, alongside shared stories (experimental groups), or to balanced literacy approaches delivered by their classroom teachers (control group). Two computer-based interventions—a phoneme-based synthetic phonics method and a rime-based analytic phonics method—were contrasted. Children were taught 4 times per week for 12 weeks in small groups. There were significant improvements in letter knowledge in the analytic phonics program and significant improvements in phonological awareness, listening comprehension, and reading comprehension at immediate posttest and in phonological awareness and reading fluency at a delayed posttest in the synthetic phonics program. Regenerating the load‐bearing tissues requires 3D scaffolds that balance the temporary mechanical function with the biological requirements. In functional tissue engineering, designing scaffolds with biomimetic mechanical properties could promote tissue ingrowth since the cells are sensitive to their local mechanical environment. This work aims to design scaffolds that mimic the mechanical response of the biological tissues under physiological loading conditions. Poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA) scaffolds with varying porosities and pore sizes were made by the 3D‐plotting technique. The scaffolds were tested under unconfined ramp compression to compare their stress profile under load with that of bovine cartilage. A comparison between the material parameters estimated for the scaffolds and for the bovine cartilage based on the biphasic theory enabled the definition of an optimum window for the porosity and pore size of these constructs. Moreover, the finite element prediction for the stress distribution inside the scaffolds, surrounded by the host cartilaginous tissue, demonstrated a negligible perturbation of the stress field at the site of implantation. The finite element modeling tools in combination with the developed methodology for optimal porosity/pore size determination can be used to improve the design of biomimetic scaffolds. POLYM. ENG. The authors tested a dolphin's (Tursiops truncatus) understanding of human manual pointing gestures to 3 distal objects located to the left of, to the right of, or behind the dolphin. The human referred to an object through a direct point (Pd), a cross-body point (Px), or a familiar symbolic gesture (S). In Experiment 1, the dolphin responded correctly to 80% of Pds toward laterally placed objects but to only 40% of Pds to the object behind. Responding to objects behind improved to 88% in Experiment 2 after exaggerated pointing was briefly instituted. Spontaneous comprehension of Pxs also was demonstrated. In Experiment 3, the human produced a sequence of 2 Pds, 2 Pxs, 2 Ss, or all 2-way combinations of these 3 to direct the dolphin to take the object referenced second to the object referenced first. Accuracy ranged from 68% to 77% correct (chance?=?17%). These results established that the dolphin understood the referential character of the human manual pointing gesture. The microstructure of the Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si structure has been investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Pt films of 100 nm thickness deposited
by sputtering or evaporation onto unheated substrates gave complete coverage of the underlying Ti layer and showed a granular
and faceted structure with grains ∼20 nm in diameter. They did not exhibit hillocks or surface TiOx formation. X-ray diffraction was used to examine the film stress through use of the sin2ψ method with bulk values for the elastic constants (v=0.39, E=162 GPa). The as-deposited sputtered film had a compressive
stress of ∼540 MPa, while the evaporated films had tensile stresses of ∼630 MPa. The films then received a 400°C rapid thermal
anneal (RTA) for 90 s and a subsequent RTA of 650°C for 30s. Further investigation of the film stresses and microstructure
were made after each annealing step. After the low temperature anneal, the film stress for the sputtered film became tensile.
Plan-view sections examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that the as-deposited sputtered films were dense
but became porous after annealing. Initially, the evaporated films had a less dense microstructure, but were more stable with
annealing. Little change in the stress for the evaporated film was observed after this initial low temperature annealing step.
Additional annealing of the evaporated and sputtered samples caused complete consumption of the Ti layer including some TiOx formation from the underlying SiO2 layer and marked interaction with the Pt; however, little change in the stress was found. The surface of the Pt film revealed
larger grains, but otherwise remained unaffected. The underlying phase changes were minimized once the Ti layer had reacted
with the Pt. Due to the ratio of the layers, Pt:Ti of 2:1, the surface of the Pt was unaffected. 相似文献

Cold-loving or psychrophilic organisms are widely distributed in nature as a large part of the earth's surface is at temperatures around 0 degrees C. To maintain metabolic rates and to prosper in cold environments, these extremophilic organisms have developed a vast array of adaptations. One main adaptive strategy developed in order to cope with the reduction of chemical reaction rates induced by low temperatures is the synthesis of cold-adapted or psychrophilic enzymes. These enzymes are characterized by a high catalytic activity at low temperatures associated with a low thermal stability. A study of protein adaptation strategies suggests that the high activity of psychrophilic enzymes could be achieved by the destabilization of the active site, allowing the catalytic center to be more flexible at low temperatures, whereas other protein regions may be destabilized or as rigid as their mesophilic counterparts. Due to these particular properties, psychrophilic enzymes offer a high potential not only for fundamental research but also for biotechnological applications. 相似文献

While the consumption of fruit and vegetables is protective against cardiovascular disease, the relative efficacy of specific plants is poorly substantiated. In addition, although most plants are consumed in a ‘processed’ state (i.e., including cooking), the bioactivity of processed forms of plants is also generally unknown. Effects on elements of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) were studied in a selection of 131 dietary plant species, fungi or varietals, across 44 families, after standardised processing. Products were tested for in vitro inhibition of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) and of angiotensin II (AngII) binding to its receptor (AT1R). The results indicated that ACE inhibition activity was weakly correlated with AngII to AT1R inhibition and that ACE inhibitory activity was positively correlated with total polyphenolic content. These results highlight that processed forms of dietary plants exhibit broad capacity for in vitro modulation of RAS. Furthermore, considering the extensive ACE inhibitory activity reported for peptides derived from many dietary proteins, this implicates broad potential for RAS regulation by several dietary factors. With RAS elements also known to function in the gastro-intestinal (GI) tract, there is a need to understand the physiological role of dietary factors on GI function, blood pressure regulation and salt excretion. 相似文献

Many community- and hospital-based group treatment programs have an open enrolment, that is, a rolling admissions structure, in which a group member who drops out or successfully completes therapy is replaced by another individual. Although practically efficient and perhaps clinically useful, the interdependence of these group participants' data may result in incorrect inferences drawn from the data analyses if this interdependence is not accounted for. We present an analytic strategy that uses time varying covariates in multilevel models to illustrate a methodology to address these data analysis problems. Participants were adults with eating disorders (N = 229) who attended an average of 12 weeks of a rolling admissions group-based day hospital program during an 8-year period, and who completed a group therapy alliance measure weekly. Individual alliance to the group increased from week to week, and this growth remained significant even after controlling for the time varying level of other group members' alliance to the group. Further, the level of an individual's alliance score during any given week was positively related to the group's alliance during that week. The multilevel time varying covariate models presented here add to a very small but emerging set of analytic strategies available for researchers to address some of the hurdles to correctly analyze data from rolling admissions group-based treatment programs. Results from this study provide evidence that a group's culture is passed on and affects an individual's alliance to the group despite changes in group membership.
