Block constraint preconditioners are a most recent development for the iterative solution to large‐scale, often ill‐conditioned, coupled consolidation problems. A major limitation to their practical use, however, is the somewhat difficult selection of a number of user‐defined parameters (at least 4) in a more or less optimal way. The present paper investigates the robustness of three variants of the block constraint preconditioning in relation to the above parameters. A theoretical analysis of the eigenspectrum of the preconditioned matrix provides relatively simple bounds of the eigenvalues as a function of these parameters. A number of test problems used to validate the theoretical results show that both the mixed constraint preconditioner (MCP) combined with the symmetric quasi‐minimal residual (SQMR) solver and the MCP triangular variant (T‐MCP) combined with the bi‐conjugate gradient stabilized (Bi‐CGSTAB) are efficient and robust tools for the solution to difficult Finite Element‐discretized coupled consolidation problems. Moreover, the practical selection of the user‐defined parameters is relatively easy as a stable behavior is observed for a wide range of fill‐in degree values. A scientific debate is in progress about the intersection of climate change with the new field of fossil fuels depletion geology. Here, new projections of atmospheric CO2 concentration and global-mean temperature change are presented, should fossil fuels be exploited at a rate limited by geological availability only. The present work starts from the projections of fossil energy use, as obtained from ten independent sources. From such projections an upper bound, a lower bound and an ensemble mean profile for fossil CO2 emissions until 2200 are derived. Using the coupled gas–cycle/climate model MAGICC, the corresponding climatic projections out to 2200 are obtained. We find that CO2 concentration might increase up to about 480 ppm (445–540 ppm), while the global-mean temperature increase w.r.t. 2000 might reach 1.2 °C (0.9–1.6 °C). However, future improvements of fossil fuels recovery and discoveries of new resources might lead to higher emissions; hence our climatic projections are likely to be underestimated. In the absence of actions of emissions reduction, a level of dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system might be already experienced toward the middle of the 21st century, despite the constraints imposed by the exhaustion of fossil fuels. 相似文献

Fire-fighters, paramedics, and emergency medical technicians routinely confront potentially traumatic events in the course of their jobs. The mediation role of coping strategies and collective efficacy in the relationship between stress appraisal and quality of life was examined (compassion satisfaction, compassion fatigue, and burnout) in a correlational study. Participants were 463 Italian rescue workers (fire fighters and different categories of emergency health care professionals). Participants filled out measures of stress appraisal, collective efficacy, coping strategies, and quality of life. The results showed that emotion and support coping, self-blame coping, and self-distraction mediated the relationship between stress appraisal and compassion fatigue. Moreover, collective efficacy, self-blame coping, and religious coping mediated the relationship between stress appraisal and burnout. Finally, collective efficacy, self-blame coping, and problem-focused coping mediated the relationship between stress appraisal and compassion satisfaction. This note shows that the complete and the ready simulation preorders do not have a finite inequational basis over the language BCCSP when the set of actions is a singleton. Moreover, the equivalences induced by those preorders do not have a finite (in)equational axiomatization either. The skew-normal is a parametric model that extends the normal family by the addition of a shape parameter to account for skewness.
As well, the skew-t distribution is generated by a perturbation of symmetry of the basic Student’s t density. These families
share some nice properties. In particular, they allow a continuous variation through different degrees of asymmetry and, in
the case of the skew-t, tail thickness, but still retain relevant features of the perturbed symmetric densities. In both models,
a problem occurs in the estimation of the skewness parameter: for small and moderate sample sizes, the maximum likelihood
method gives rise to an infinite estimate with positive probability, even when the sample skewness is not too large. To get
around this phenomenon, we consider the minimum Hellinger distance estimation technique as an alternative to maximum likelihood.
The method always leads to a finite estimate of the shape parameter. Furthermore, the procedure is asymptotically efficient

Phosphorelays are extended two-component signalling systems found in diverse bacteria, lower eukaryotes and plants. Only few of these systems are characterized, and we still lack a full understanding of their signalling abilities. Here, we aim to achieve a global understanding of phosphorelay signalling and its dynamical properties. We develop a generic model, allowing us to systematically analyse response dynamics under different assumptions. Using this model, we find that the steady-state concentration of phosphorylated protein at the final layer of a phosphorelay is a linearly increasing, but eventually saturating function of the input. In contrast, the intermediate layers can display ultrasensitivity. We find that such ultrasensitivity is a direct result of the phosphorelay biochemistry; shuttling of a single phosphate group from the first to the last layer. The response dynamics of the phosphorelay results in tolerance of cross-talk, especially when it occurs as cross-deactivation. Further, it leads to a high signal-to-noise ratio for the final layer. We find that a relay length of four, which is most commonly observed, acts as a saturating point for these dynamic properties. These findings suggest that phosphorelays could act as a mechanism to reduce noise and effects of cross-talk on the final layer of the relay and enforce its input–response relation to be linear. In addition, our analysis suggests that middle layers of phosphorelays could embed thresholds. We discuss the consequence of these findings in relation to why cells might use phosphorelays along with enzymatic kinase cascades. 相似文献
