In this paper a methodological approach is proposed to validate mechanistic modeling for proton binding onto active sites of mineral and soil samples by reducing the uncertainty and arbitrariness of model schematization. This approach is based on the quantitative formulation (X-ray calibration method) of a simulating mineral mixture (SMM) accounting for the main mineral phases in the soil (quartz, goethite, hematite, muscovite, clinochlore). Mineral and organic contributions were separated by comparing titration curves of river sediment and SMM. Specific mineral contributions to the acid properties of SMM were separated by comparing titration models of SMM and single minerals. Different nonelectrostatic models were used for titrations of SMM and single minerals: two-site/three-KH models (one amphoteric plus one monoprotic site) for clay minerals and SMM; one-site/two-KH models (one amphoteric site) for goethite and hematite; and a one-site/one-KH model (one monoprotic site) for quartz. Crossed-comparisons of titration models allow for identifying and quantifying the specific contributions of the distinct edge hydroxyl groups of iron oxides, clay minerals, and quartz in the different pH ranges. In particularthe amphoteric sites of aluminosilicates mainly contribute in the acid-neutral pH range, the amphoteric sites of iron oxides take part in the neutral-basic range, and finally the monoprotic edge hydroxyl groups of quartz react in the upper basic region of pH. The good simulation of the acid-base properties of SMM (according to single mineral titration models and quantitative composition by X-ray) confirms both model schematization and SMM formulation. Speciation diagrams of the active sites of the different mineral components (aluminosilicates, iron oxides, and quartz) were obtained by implementing the database of a dedicated software with the apparent equilibrium constants regressed by titration modeling of single minerals. 相似文献

Interleukin (IL)-33 is a member of the interleukin (IL)-1 family of cytokines linked to the development of inflammatory conditions and cancer in the gastrointestinal tract. This study is designed to investigate whether IL-33 has a direct effect on human gastric epithelial cells (GES-1), the human gastric adenocarcinoma cell line (AGS), and the gastric carcinoma cell line (NCI-N87) by assessing its role in the regulation of cell proliferation, migration, cell cycle, and apoptosis. Cell cycle regulation was also determined in ex vivo gastric cancer samples obtained during endoscopy and surgical procedures. Cell lines and tissue samples underwent stimulation with rhIL-33. Proliferation was assessed by XTT and CFSE assays, migration by wound healing assay, and apoptosis by caspase 3/7 activity assay and annexin V assay. Cell cycle was analyzed by means of propidium iodine assay, and gene expression regulation was assessed by RT-PCR profiling. We found that IL-33 has an antiproliferative and proapoptotic effect on cancer cell lines, and it can stimulate proliferation and reduce apoptosis in normal epithelial cell lines. These effects were also confirmed by the analysis of cell cycle gene expression, which showed a reduced expression of pro-proliferative genes in cancer cells, particularly in genes involved in G0/G1 and G2/M checkpoints. These results were confirmed by gene expression analysis on bioptic and surgical specimens. In this paper the dynamic behaviour of a wind turbine connected to the grid is examined. The model of the fixed speed wind turbine has been developed with the Simulink simulation tool (Matlab Inc.) It is composed of the induction generator, the shaft system, an aerodynamic model of the wind turbine rotor and the pitch control system. Using this model, a three-phase fault is applied close to the wind turbine and cleared by disconnecting the faulty line.The rigorous implementation of the simulink model allowed the authors to evaluate the exact dependence of various electrical parameters for the induction generator on voltage stability. Furthermore, the effects of wind turbine mechanical construction and of grid parameters on voltage stability are also evaluated and discussed.For each parameter, the terminal voltage and the generator rotor speed for different fault-clearing times are drawn. Finally, the terminal voltage and the generator rotor speed obtained for a fifth order model of the induction generator are compared with those obtained for a third order model. The differences between the two models are discussed. The results will help to understand transient stability phenomena in wind farms. 相似文献

Thermomonas hydrothermalis is a Gram‐negative thermophilic bacterium that is able to live at 50 °C. This ability is attributed to chemical modifications, involving those to bacterial cell‐wall components, such as proteins and (glyco)lipids. As the main component of the outer membrane of Gram‐negative bacteria, lipopolysaccharides (LPSs) are exposed to the environment, thus they can undergo structural chemical changes to allow thermophilic bacteria to live at their optimal growth temperature. Furthermore, as one of the major target of the eukaryotic innate immune system, LPS elicits host immune response in a structure‐dependent mode; thus the uncommon chemical features of thermophilic bacterial LPSs might exert a different biological action on the innate immune system—an antagonistic effect, as shown in studies of LPS structure–activity relationship in the ongoing research into antagonist LPS candidates. Here, we report the complete structural and biological activity analysis of the lipo‐oligosaccharide isolated from Thermomonas hydrothermalis, achieved by a multidisciplinary approach (chemical analysis, NMR, MALDI MS and cellular immunology). Over the latest few years, cross-layer design in wireless networks has drawn great attention from the research community. One of the main arguments in favor of such techniques is that the hop-count metric alone is not enough to capture the specificities of wireless links (e.g., interferences, collisions, fading). In this paper, we address a simple yet fundamental question: What are the real improvements that cross-layering can bring to routing performance when compared to the simple hop-count metric? In our experiments, we consider the backbone of a real wireless mesh network composed of 12 routers deployed in an office building. We focus on the stability of routes and their persistence. In spite of the nature of cross-layer metrics that take into account information from different layers, lets them be very reactive to changes, we observe that using these metrics, pairs of nodes tend to mainly use the same set of two or three routes between them. 相似文献

We analyze the behavior of a dense granular aggregate made by identical, elastic spheres, uni-axially compressed at constant pressure. Our goal is to predict the evolution of the effective moduli along the loading path when small perturbations are applied to stressed states. The analytical model is based upon the average strain theory. We show that the moduli in the anisotropic state normalized with the corresponding initial isotropic value, are captured by a so crude model. Numerical simulations support this result. 相似文献

We introduce a family of fourth-order two-step methods that preserve the energy function of canonical polynomial Hamiltonian systems. As is the case with linear mutistep and one-leg methods, a prerogative of the new formulae is that the associated nonlinear systems to be solved at each step of the integration procedure have the very same dimension of the underlying continuous problem.The key tools in the new methods are the line integral associated with a conservative vector field (such as the one defined by a Hamiltonian dynamical system) and its discretization obtained by the aid of a quadrature formula. Energy conservation is equivalent to the requirement that the quadrature is exact, which turns out to be always the case in the event that the Hamiltonian function is a polynomial and the degree of precision of the quadrature formula is high enough. We introduce here a model which includes the thermal dynamics in the time evolution of a semiconductor multiple quantum well microresonator, driven by a coherent holding beam. The active layer is electrically pumped, in order to obtain population inversion, but it is maintained below the lasing threshold. We show that the inclusion of thermal effects introduces a Hopf instability which may dominate the dynamical behaviour of the system in some operational regimes. In those cases our numerical simulations show that both spatial patterns and cavity solitons perform a drift motion in the transverse direction. This motion develops over the slow time scale which characterizes thermal effects. 相似文献

Traffic geometry is a factor that contributes to cognitive complexity in air traffic control. In conflict‐detection tasks, geometry can affect the attentional effort necessary to correctly perceive and interpret the situation; online measures of situational workload are therefore highly desirable. In this study, we explored whether saccadic movements vary with changes in geometry. We created simple scenarios with two aircraft and simulated a conflict detection task. Independent variables were the conflict angle and the distance to convergence point. We hypothesized lower saccadic peak velocity (and longer duration) for increasing complexity, that is, for increasing conflict angles and for different distances to convergence point. Response times varied accordingly with task complexity. Concerning saccades, there was a decrease of peak velocity (and a related increase of duration) for increased geometry complexity for large saccades (>15°). The data therefore suggest that geometry is able to influence “reaching” saccades and not “fixation” saccades. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 相似文献
