Structural cast-in-place SFRC: technology,control criteria and recent applications in spain

Steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) has been traditionally applied to pavements or tunnelling. However, classical structural applications have not been developed so fully. This paper examines different reasons which may justify the lack of this application. Several technologies on the fiber dosing system are presented and assessed. The SFRC reception control and acceptance criteria have been developed in accordance with the upcoming Spanish code. Adopting such criteria is justified on previous experiences and test viability under cast-in-place conditions. Some lines of action to promote the use of fibers with structural purposes are proposed. Two examples of recent applications are also set out, and a justification of the convenience of SFRC in terms of structural evaluation and durability under seawater conditions is provided.

Role of the central and peripheral nervous system in the ovarian function

This review attempts to give a comprehensive overview of ovarian innervation, considering the whole nervous system and its different levels that may modify the ovarian function. The connection between the ovary and the central nervous system through the autonomic pathways, including the peripheral ganglia, is highlighted. The evidence obtained over the last years highlights the role of the superior ovarian nerve (SON) in the ovarian phenomena. Besides, the effect on the ovary of conventional neurotransmitters and others such as indolamines and peptides, which have been found in this organ, are discussed. Various reproductive diseases have been studied almost exclusively from the endocrine point of view. It is evident that a better knowledge about the role of the neural factors involved in the ovarian physiology may facilitate the understanding of some of these. A review of the concepts and an update of some experimental designs is made that permits clarifying several aspects of the relationship between the neural system and the ovary. At present, there is no doubt that the innervation of the ovary is involved in several physiological aspects of this gland function. However, the relationship of some levels of the nervous system and the ovary offer a wide avenue for future research.     

Architectural and Basic Circuit Considerations for a Flexible 128 × 128 Mixed-Signal SIMD Vision Chip

From a system level perspective, this paper presents a 128 × 128 flexible and reconfigurable Focal-Plane Analog Programmable Array Processor, which has been designed as a single chip in a 0.35 m standard digital 1P-5M CMOS technology. The core processing array has been designed to achieve high-speed of operation and large-enough accuracy (7 bits) with low power consumption. The chip includes on-chip program memory to allow for the execution of complex, sequential and/or bifurcation flow image processing algorithms. It also includes the structures and circuits needed to guarantee its embedding into conventional digital hosting systems: external data interchange and control are completely digital. The chip contains close to four million transistors, 90% of them working in analog mode. The chip features up to 330 GOPs (Giga Operations per second), and uses the power supply (180 GOP/Joule) and the silicon area (3.8 GOPS/mm²) efficiently, and is able to maintain VGA processing throughputs of 100 Frames/s with about 10–20 basic image processing tasks on each frame.     

Permittivity and Conductivity Measurements of Building Materials at 5.8 GHz and 41.5 GHz

The results of various experiments performed to characterize electromagnetic properties of typical building materials at BRAN (Broadband Radio Access Networks) and MVDS (Multipoint Video Distribution System) bands are presented and compared. Transmission and reflection coefficients were measured as functions of the angle of incidence, using a wideband sounder based on the swept frequency technique. A high precision angular positioning system was built and used in co-ordination with the measurement equipment.The dielectric constants (_r) were estimated by comparing values predicted with a multiple successive internal reflection model and measured transmission and reflection coefficients. It has been found that the variation of the dielectric constant value with the frequency does not necessarily follow the same trend for different materials. For example, the measured _r for plasterboard presents an increment withfrequency (2.02 at 5.8 GHz, 2.5 at 41.5 GHz – measured by theauthors –, 2.58 at 59.5 GHz, and 2.81 at 60.2 GHz – given byliterature –), while the values for glass follow a wanderingpattern (6.06 at 5.8 GHz, 5–10 at 10 GHz, 3.41 at 41.5 GHz, 7.51at 57.6 GHz, and 5.29 at 60.2 GHz). Moreover, the measured_r for a brick wall at 5.8 GHz (3.58) shows differenceswith values reported at 2 GHz (4.44).     

Effect of blanching and hygroscopic coating on quality of fresh cut carrots (Daucus carota var. chantenay) during storage

The effect of blanching at low temperatures (solution 1% acid citric, 50 degrees C for 30 seconds) and the application of glycerol as humectant (3% p/p, 20 seconds) to preserve the quality of fresh-cut carrots (Daucus carota) were studied as individual or combined treatments. Four treatments were evaluated: a control by dipping samples for 30 seconds in distilled water (T1); blanching (T2); glycerol application (T3); and blanching plus glycerol application (T4). Total carotenoids content, color, soluble solids and weight loss were monitored during storage. Results showed no differences between treatments in carotenoids content (p > 0.10) and soluble solids (p > 0.05). However, differences were observed between treatments in weight loss (p < 0.05) and color change (p < 0.05). Blanched samples (T2 and T4) showed small changes in orange color intensity compared to treatments T1 and T3 (p < 0.05).     

Cation/H+ antiporters mediate potassium and sodium fluxes in Pichia sorbitophila. Cloning of the PsNHA1 and PsNHA2 genes and expression in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Pichia sorbitophila grows rapidly in the presence of very high NaCl concentrations. Under these conditions, even when the K(+) concentration is low, P. sorbitophila cells can maintain low Na(+) and high K(+) contents. This remarkable capacity of P. sorbitophila fails when the external pH is not acidic. This indicates that Na(+) efflux is mediated by an electroneutral Na(+)/H(+) antiporter. We have cloned and sequenced two genes designated as PsNHA1 and PsNHA2, which probably encode two antiporters of this type. The genes present high similarity with the corresponding genes from other yeasts. The heterologous expression of PsNHA1 or PsNHA2 in a Saccharomyces cerevisiae mutant lacking the Na(+) efflux systems and sensitive to high concentrations of Na(+) and K(+) rescued the tolerance and the ability to extrude both cations.
