High fidelity finite element modeling of continuum mechanics problems often requires using all quadrilateral or all hexahedral
meshes. The efficiency of such models is often dependent upon the ability to adapt a mesh to the physics of the phenomena.
Adapting a mesh requires the ability to both refine and/or coarsen the mesh. The algorithms available to refine and coarsen
triangular and tetrahedral meshes are very robust and efficient. However, the ability to locally and conformally refine or
coarsen all quadrilateral and all hexahedral meshes presents many difficulties. Some research has been done on localized conformal
refinement of quadrilateral and hexahedral meshes. However, little work has been done on localized conformal coarsening of
quadrilateral and hexahedral meshes. A general method which provides both localized conformal coarsening and refinement for
quadrilateral meshes is presented in this paper. This method is based on restructuring the mesh with simplex manipulations
to the dual of the mesh. In addition, this method appears to be extensible to hexahedral meshes in three dimensions.

Recent in vitro data show that neurons respond to input variance with varying sensitivities. Here we demonstrate that Hodgkin-Huxley (HH) neurons can operate in two computational regimes: one that is more sensitive to input variance (differentiating) and one that is less sensitive (integrating). A boundary plane in the 3D conductance space separates these two regimes. For a reduced HH model, this plane can be derived analytically from the V nullcline, thus suggesting a means of relating biophysical parameters to neural computation by analyzing the neuron's dynamical system. 相似文献

Model-based feedback control of vibration in flexible structures can be complicated by the possibility that interaction with an external body occurs. If not accounted for, instability or poor performance may result. In this paper, a method is proposed for achieving robust vibration control of flexible structures under contact. The method uses robust linear state feedback, coupled with a state estimation scheme utilizing contact force measurement. Uncertain contact characteristics are modelled by a sector-bounded non-linear function, such that state feedback gains can be synthesized using a matrix inequality formulation of the Popov stability criterion. A separation theorem is used to establish a robust H2 cost bound for the closed loop system. Experimental results from a multi-mode flexible structure testbed confirm that vibration attenuation and stability can be maintained over a broad range of contact characteristics, in terms of compliance and clearance. 相似文献

Integrins exhibit reversible changes in their ability to bind ligands and these changes enable transient cell adhesion. We recently showed that leukocyte integrin CR3 (complement receptor type three, CD11b/CD18, alpha m beta 2) may be purified in a form that is either capable or incapable of binding soluble, monomeric ligand and that "inactive" CR3 may be rendered capable of binding ligand by addition of an anti-CR3 mAb known as KIM-127 (Cai and Wright, JBC. 270: 14358, 1995). Here, we demonstrate that active CR3 may be rendered inactive by treatment of immobilized receptor with EDTA. EDTA-treated CR3 failed to bind ligand even in the presence of mM Ca2+ and Mg2+, suggesting that EDTA-treatment caused a change in the receptor that is not readily reversed. EDTA-treated receptor did, however, bind ligand upon addition of KIM-127 plus Mg2+ with an affinity (17.8 +/- 4.5 nM) similar to untreated, active receptor (12.5 +/- 4.7 nM). EDTA-treated CR3 thus exhibits the properties of inactive CR3, in which the ligand binding site is cryptic but subject to exposure by KIM-127. A candidate for the cryptic ligand binding site is the I-domain, a Mg2+-binding region in the alpha chain of CR3. We found that monomeric C3bi binds directly to recombinant I-domain in a Mg(2+)-dependent fashion with an affinity of 300 +/- 113 nM. These results thus suggest that CR3 may be inactivated by removing tightly bound divalent cation from a cryptic site in CR3. 相似文献

Prior studies on carbon-filler based, conductive polymer composites have mainly investigated how conductive filler morphology and concentration can tailor a material's electrical conductivity and overlooks the effects of filler alignment due to the difficulty to control and quickly quantify the filler alignment. Here, direct ink write 3D printing's unique ability is utilized to control carbon fiber alignment with a single process parameter, velocity ratio, to instantaneously activate or deactivate the electrical network in composites. Maximum electrical conductivity is achieved by randomly aligning carbon fibers that enhances the chance of direct fiber-to-fiber contact and, thus, activating the electrical network. However, aligning the fibers by increasing the velocity ratio disrupts the electrical network by minimizing fiber-to-fiber contact that resulted in a drastic decrease in electrical conductivity by as much as five orders of magnitude in both short and long carbon fiber composites. With this study, this study demonstrates that electrically conductive or insulative composites can be fabricated sequentially with a single ink. This novel ability to instantaneously control the electrical conductivity of carbon fiber reinforced composites allow to directly embed conductive pathways into designs to 3D print multifunctional composites that are capable of localized heating and self-sensing. 相似文献

Temperature change, as a common kind of internal perturbation performed on granular materials, has a significant effect on the bulk properties of granular materials. However, few studies on thermally-induced shakedown under a long-term thermal cycling were reported. In this work, the discrete element method was used to give insight into the thermally-induced shakedown on the fabric and stress states within non-cohesive, frictional granular assemblies. Assemblies were submitted to thermal cycling at a stationary boundary condition after experiencing a one-dimensional compression. Evolution of coordination number, entropy and anisotropy was investigated as well as boundary forces and contact forces. At the same time, effects of the heating rate, the initial vertical load and the magnitude of temperature change were examined. It demonstrates that thermal cycling induces a significant force relaxation within granular materials, while the corresponding granular fabric has a small change. In addition, the entropy and anisotropy decreases with thermal cycling. Moreover, the initial vertical load can constrain the development of thermally-induced fabric change, thereby limiting force relaxation to some degree. Both high heating rate and larger magnitudes of temperature change contribute to more significant force relaxation. This paper is the first part of a two-part series. It proves a number of direct relationships between the Fourier transform and the simple genetic algorithm. (For a binary representation, the Walsh transform is the Fourier transform). The results are of a theoretical nature and are based on the analysis of mutation and crossover. The Fourier transform of the mixing matrix is shown to be sparse. An explicit formula is given for the spectrum of the differential of the mixing transformation. By using the Fourier representation and the fast Fourier transform, one generation of the infinite population simple genetic algorithm can be computed in time O(cllog2(3)), where c is arity of the alphabet and l is the string length. This is in contrast to the time of O(c3l) for the algorithm as represented in the standard basis. There are two orthogonal decompositions of population space that are invariant under mixing. The sequel to this paper will apply the basic theoretical results obtained here to inverse problems and asymptotic behavior. 相似文献
