Expert assessment of coital injuries from the forensic medicine viewpoint

A 38-year-old woman was transmitted to hospital with profuse vaginal bleeding. The origin of the vaginal injuries (resulting from "normal" sexual intercourse vs. use of instruments for manipulation in the vagina) was obscure. The wound pattern is presented and the literature on the subject is reviewed with special reference to predisposing factors and genesis of coital injuries. Concerning the wound pattern, reflecting a blunt trauma, a manipulation with a (so far unknown) instrument, but also with finger or hand could not be proved with the required certainty. In the presented case the origin of the vaginal injuries from "normal" sexual intercourse as described by the accused man could not be excluded.     

Transforming smoothers for PDE constrained optimization problems

Transforming smoothers are known as a successful approach to the multigrid treatment of saddlepoint problems resulting from variational problems. In this paper we analyze similar multigrid methods in the context of the practically important class of optimization problems with partial differential equation constraint, which lead to a different kind of saddle point problems. We prove level independent convergence properties for the resulting multigrid methods and demonstrate this also in numerical investigations for a relevant model problem.     

Treatment of schizophrenic psychoses with Lyorodin

Forty-four patients suffering from acute and chronic schizophrenic psychoses were used to obtain, by using Lorr's scale (IMPS) and taking the changes in disease state observed within three months as a base, suggestions or pointers as to the proper treatment of disease with fluphenazine (lyorodin) which is a neuroleptically highly potent phenothiazine derivative. Megalomania, grandiose delusions apathetic and depressive syndromes showed marked tendencies toward major improvement. An "antiautistic" effect was observed in chronic patients. The effective dose was between 6 and 12 mg a day. The drug was well tolerated. In the majority of cases it was also necessary for antiparkinsonian drugs to be administered to patients. After twelve months of treatment, slight to major improvements or even freedom from symptoms could be observed in 28 cases (or 64%).     

Josephson effect of a superconducting ferromagnet

A point contact tunneling technique has been used to investigate the existence of superconductivity in a long-range, magnetically ordered phase in the reentrant pseudoternary system (Er_{1 – x}Ho_x)Rh₄B₄ in the vicinity of the lower critical temperature T _{c 2}. In this experiment, Josephson-like current-voltage characteristics could be observed in a Nb-Nb oxide-(Er_0.58Ho_0.42)Rh₄B₄ junction even in a temperature region below T _{c 2} (1.8–1.96 K), that is, in the magnetically ordered phase.This work was carried out while on leave of absence.Sponsored by Suisse National Science Foundation.Work in La Jolla sponsored by the National Science Foundation under contract No. NSF/DMR77-08469.     

Are Reviews an Alternative to Pair Programming?

From the first presentation of extreme programming on, pair programming has attracted a wide range of programmers to work together in front of one display. The proposed advantages of pair programming are a faster development cycle and code with higher quality. However, the nearly doubled personnel cost when compared to single developers seems to outweigh these advantages. Instead of showing the superiority of pair programming, we seek an alternative. Can a single developer be assisted by an already known technique with which he produces the quality of pairs with only a fraction of the cost? The answer with some restrictions is: yes, he can. Reviews are a reasonable candidate with respect to code quality and cost.
