Panchromatic Chromophore Mixtures in an AlPO4‐5 Molecular Sieve: Spatial Separation Effects and Energy Transfer Cascades

Dye‐loaded AlPO₄‐5 single crystals were prepared by microwave‐assisted hydrothermal synthesis from a batch, containing a mixture of three chromophores (Coumarin 40, Rhodamine BE50, and Oxazine 1) differing in their absorption range, molecular dimensions, and solubilities. Confocal fluorescence images reveal a spatial separation effect of the dye molecules, where the slimmer, more‐soluble dye molecule (Coumarin 40) is uniformly distributed in the body of the single crystal, and the bulky and/or less‐soluble ones (Rhodamine BE50, Oxazine 1) are situated in distinct domains. Visible spectra show good panchromatic absorption of visible light. Fluorescence lifetime measurements indicate the presence of an energy transfer cascade of the entirely fixed dye molecules from Coumarin 40 to Oxazine 1. The transfer mechanism is predominantly radiative.

Concept for Scale-up on Suspension in a Stirred Tank. The relationships derived for the suspension of solids in a propeller loop can be applied to corresponding processes in a stirred tank by means of analogy considerations. Accordingly, the ratio of stirrer power to slip power of laminar flow state is inversely proportional to the vessel diameter. In contrast, the power ratio remains constant in turbulent flow. There is a pronounced transition range between these two limiting states. The author's own experimental studies performed over a wide range of Re numbers for the recycling flow confirm this relationship. The observations presented explain why numerous authors have determined scale-up rules lying between these two extremes. The experiments shows that the power input for suspension is always significantly greater than the slip power. Under otherwise identical conditions, the necessary stirrer power is smaller by a factor of three for a propeller stirrer than for a disk impeller. The suspension of small solids concentrations can also be approximated by the flow model presented. The somewhat different physical relations valid in this case are substantiated by the author's experiments. The model also provided information relevant to scale-up when the particle properties are unknown. This is demontrated for an example in a 21 m³ vessel.

Continuous-wave lasing of single-mode metamorphic quantum dot lasers for the 1.5-μm spectral region

Lasers based on InAs/InGaAs quantum dots grown on metamorphic (In,Ga,Al)As layers deposited by MBE on GaAs substrates exhibited emission near 1.5 μm with a differential quantum efficiency of about 50%. The narrow-stripe lasers operate in a single transverse mode and withstand continuous current density above 20 kA cm^?2 without significant degradation. A maximum continuous-wave output power of 220 mW is obtained. Neither current nor beam filamentation was observed up to the highest pumping levels.     

MOBSY: Integration of vision and dialogue in service robots

Abstract. This contribution introduces MOBSY, a fully integrated, autonomous mobile service robot system. It acts as an automatic dialogue-based receptionist for visitors to our institute. MOBSY incorporates many techniques from different research areas into one working stand-alone system. The techniques involved range from computer vision over speech understanding to classical robotics. Along with the two main aspects of vision and speech, we also focus on the integration aspect, both on the methodological and on the technical level. We describe the task and the techniques involved. Finally, we discuss the experiences that we gained with MOBSY during a live performance at our institute.

Online Calculation and Prediction of the Strip Temperature in a Hot Strip Finishing Mill

The paper deals with a physical model for the calculation of the strip temperature in a hot rolling mill. Beside the heat transfer from the strip to the environment in the different mill sections a sub‐model for the material properties of steel including phase transitions is introduced. For the application in a process automation system an online adaptation of the model to the current state of the mill is indispensable. The adaptation is explained in detail.
