ABSTRACT

Arabian Light crude oil vacuum bottoms has been fractionated into five high-boiling fractions by wiped film evaporation, and the fractions subjected to catalytic cracking in a fixed-fluidized bed using a commercial equilibrium cracking catalyst. Density, aromaticity, and heteroatom content generally increased with boiling point, as did metals content except for vanadium and iron which demonstrated possible bimodal distributions. The cracking response of these fractions showed increasing yields of dry gas and coke, with decreasing gasoline yields, as a function of increasing apparent boiling point as would normally be expected. Surprisingly, however, local maxima were observed for wet gas yield and total conversion, with local minima for cycle oil and slurry yields, in the region of the 1200–1263°F (650–680°C) middle fraction. All fractions showed significant response to cracking, with coke yields generally being the only negative factor observed.  相似文献

Control of water mass inventory in Nuclear Steam Generators is important to insure sufficient cooling of the nuclear reactor. Since downcomer water level is measurable, and a reasonable indication of water mass inventory near steady-state, conventional feedwater control system designs attempt to maintain downcomer water level within a relatively narrow operational band. However, downcomer water level can temporarily react in a reverse manner to water mass inventory changes, commonly known as shrink and swell effects. These complications are accentuated during start-up or low power conditions. As a result, automatic or manual control of water level is difficult and can lead to high reactor trip rates.This paper introduces a new feedwater control strategy for Nuclear Steam Generators. The new method directly controls water mass inventory instead of downcomer water level, eliminating complications from shrink and swell all together. However, water mass inventory is not measurable, requiring an online estimator to provide a mass inventory signal based on measurable plant parameters. Since the thermal-hydraulic response of a Steam Generator is highly nonlinear, a linear state-observer is not feasible. In addition, difficulties in obtaining flow regime and density information within the Steam Generator make an estimator based on analytical methods impractical at this time.This work employs a water mass estimator based on feedforward neural networks. By properly choosing and training the neural network, mass signals can be obtained which are suitable for stable, closed-loop water mass inventory control. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that water mass control can significantly improve the operation and safety of Nuclear Steam Generators.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of three evaluation studies performed during 1998 and 1999 on SQL-Tutor, an intelligent tutoring system for the SQL database language. We have evaluated the system in the context of genuine courses, and used the results to further refine the system. The main goal of our research has been the exploration and extension of Constraint-Based Modeling (CBM), a student modeling approach proposed by Ohlsson (1994). SQL-Tutor provided us with experiences of using CBM, and we used it to extend the approach in several important ways. The main goal of all three evaluation studies was to determine how well CBM supported student learning. We have obtained positive results. The students who learnt with SQL-Tutor in the first study performed significantly better than those who did not when assessed by a subsequent classroom examination. Furthermore, the analysis of students' learning shows that CBM has a sound psychological foundation.Besides the evaluation of CBM, we also evaluated the improvements in terms of student assessments of the usefulness of the system and evaluated various techniques used in SQL-Tutor. In the second study, we evaluated the effectiveness of feedback provided to the students. This study showed that high-level advice is most beneficial to students' learning. The focus of the third study was different. We extended CBM to support long-term modeling of student knowledge, and used this extension to develop an adaptive problem-selection strategy. The study revealed the benefits of this strategy in comparison with a simple heuristic strategy. We also reflect on our experiences in evaluating SQL-Tutor.  相似文献

An airborne differential absorption lidar (DIAL) system has been developed for the remote measurement of gas and aerosol profiles in the troposphere and lower stratosphere. The multipurpose DIAL system can operate from 280 to 1064 nm for measurements of ozone, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, water vapor, temperature,pressure, and aerosol backscattering. The laser transmitter consists of two narrow linewidth Nd: YAG pumped dye lasers with automatic wavelength control. The DIAL wavelengths are transmitted with a 00-,usec temporal separation to reduce receiver system complexity. A coaxial receiver system is used to collect and optically separate the DIAL and aerosol lidar returns. Photomultiplier tubes detect the backscattered laser returns after optical filtering, and the analog signals from three tubes are digitized and stored on high-speed magnetic tape. Real-time gas concentration profiles or aerosol backscatter distributions are calculated and displayed for experiment control. Operational parameters for the airborne DIAL system are presented for measurements of ozone, water vapor, and aerosols in the 290-, 720-, and 600-nm wavelength regions, respectively. The first ozone profile measurements from an aircraft using the DIAL technique are discussed in this paper. Comparisons between DIAL and in situ ozone measurements show agreement to within +/-5 ppbv in the lower troposphere. Lidar aerosol data obtained simultaneously with DIAL ozone measurements are presented for a flight over Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay. DIAL system performance for profiling ozone in a tropopause folding experiment is evaluated, and the applications of the DIAL system to regional and global-scale tropospheric investigations are discussed.  相似文献

Conventional ramp-and-hold sintering with a wide range of heating rates was conducted on submicrometer and nanocrystalline ZrO2–3 mol% Y2O3 powder compacts. Although rapid heating rates have been reported to produce high density/fine grain size products for many submicrometer and smaller starting powders, the application of this technique to ZrO2–3 mol% Y2O3 produced mixed results. In the case of submicrometer ZrO2–3 mol% Y2O3, neither densification nor grain growth was affected by the heating rate used. In the case of nanocrystalline ZrO2–3 mol% Y2O3, fast heating rates severely retarded densiflcation and had a minimal effect on grain growth. The large adverse effect of fast heating rates on the densification of the nanocrystalline powder was traced to a thermal gradient/differential densification effect. Microstructural evidence suggests that the rate of densification greatly exceeded the rate of heat transfer in this material; consequently, the sample interior was not able to densify before being geometrically constrained by a fully dense shell which formed at the sample exterior. This finding implies that rapid rate sintering will meet severe practical constraints in the manufacture of bulk nanocrystalline ZrO2–3 mol% Y2O3 specimens.  相似文献

The association/dissociation binding kinetics of 125I-labeled mouse epidermal growth factor (EGF) to receptors on human fibroblast cells in monolayer culture have been measured at 4 degrees C as a function of extracellular pH from pH 5-9. At pH 8, steady-state total binding is maximal. As pH is lowered to 6.5, total binding monotonically decreases dramatically. It changes further only slightly between pH 6.5 and 5 to about 20% of the maximum binding value. Scatchard binding plots at pH 7.5 and above show the commonly observed concave-upward, non-linear curve; as pH is lowered, this plot becomes much more linear, indicating that the "high affinity" bound receptor population is greatly diminished. Application of our ternary complex binding model [Mayo et al., J Biol Chem 264:17838-17844, 1989], which hypothesizes complexation of the EGF-bound receptor with a cell surface interaction molecule, indicates that pH may have some direct effects on ternary complex formation, but the major effect is on EGF-receptor dissociation.  相似文献

We outline a new approach to X‐ray projection microscopy in a scanning electron microscope (SEM), which exploits phase contrast to boost the quality and information content of images. These developments have been made possible by the combination of a high‐brightness field‐emission gun (FEG)‐based SEM, direct detection CCD technology and new phase retrieval algorithms. Using this approach we have been able to obtain spatial resolution of < 0.2 µm and have demonstrated novel features such as: (i) phase‐contrast enhanced visibility of high spatial frequency image features (e.g. edges and boundaries) over a wide energy range; (ii) energy‐resolved imaging to simultaneously produce multiple quasi‐monochromatic images using broad‐band polychromatic illumination; (iii) easy implementation of microtomography; (iv) rapid and robust phase/amplitude‐retrieval algorithms to enable new real‐time and quantitative modes of microscopic imaging. These algorithms can also be applied successfully to recover object–plane information from intermediate‐field images, unlocking the potentially greater contrast and resolution of the intermediate‐field regime. Widespread applications are envisaged for fields such as materials science, biological and biomedical research and microelectronics device inspection. Some illustrative examples are presented. The quantitative methods described here are also very relevant to projection microscopy using other sources of radiation, such as visible light and electrons.  相似文献
