A technique for precracking brittle materials is presented. This procedure, which is called the sandwiched-beam (SB) technique, allows the production of sharp through-thickness cracks with predetermined length in specimens with a rectangular section. A bar, in which an initial notch is produced by using a conventional saw, is inserted between two supporting beams and the sandwich assembly is loaded in three-point bending. Conditions can be defined that allow the stable propagation of a sharp flaw from the notch as the applied load is increased. Then, the cracked bar can be used to determine the fracture toughness. The SB technique is applied to different brittle materials, including soda-lime-silica glass, alumina, Si3N4, a SiC w -Si3N4 composite, graphite, a Ti-Al intermetallic, and Carrara marble.  相似文献

Some signals are transmitted as periodic pulse trains where information is in the timing of the arrival of the pulses. A number of pulse trains arriving over the same time interval are said to be interleaved. We propose an on-line method for estimating pulse train phases and fine-tuning pulse repetition frequency (PRF) estimates of a known number of interleaved pulse trains. The computational effort is of order N, where N is the number of pulses received. In particular, we employ an extended Kalman filter, where discontinuities in the signal model are appropriately smoothed.  相似文献

This paper studies the spatial behaviour of the transient and steady-state solutions in the problem of bending of a plane elastic plate. When the transient solutions are discussed a bounded or unbounded plane plate of an arbitrary regular form is considered. Then an appropriate time-weighted line-integral measure is introduced and, for each fixed t∈[0,T], it is shown that it vanishes at distances from the support of the given data on the time interval [0,T] greater than ct, where c is a characteristic material constant. Moreover, for distances to the support lower than ct, it is established a spatial decay estimate of Saint-Venant-type. For the harmonic vibrations the case of an elastic plate whose middle surface is like a (semi-infinite) strip is considered for which the lateral sides are clamped. Then a cross-sectional line-integral measure is associated with the amplitude of the vibration and the spatial estimate is established for describing the spatial behaviour of the amplitude, provided that the frequency of the harmonic vibration is lower than a critical frequency.  相似文献

The effects of age on implicit memory were assessed in elderly and young adults using 2 priming procedures. Subjects also completed the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale—Revised (WAIS—R), 3 tests to assess frontal lobe function, and 2 recall and 2 recognition tests of explicit memory. In Experiment 1, subjects were exposed to the low-frequency member of a homophone pair in a test purported to assess general knowledge. The paper presents an analytical study aimed to establish a dimensioning procedure for the token bucket algorithm, used as a meter in a Differentiated Services network architecture, when a stochastic model for the multiplexed traffic is available. In the work, we propose an equivalent queueing system method to ‘on line’ estimate the linear bounded arrival processes (LBAP) parameters when a non‐zero probability of non‐conforming packets is accepted. Then, we validate our approach considering an aggregation of fluidic On‐Off processes with exponentially distributed sojourn time in each state, used to model telephone sources with voice activity detection (VAD). To test the goodness of our analytical results, we employ discrete event simulations, which have highlighted the accuracy of the proposed dimensioning procedure in a voice over IP (VoIP) scenario. Moreover, we investigate the multiplexing gain and the effect of different parameters on the LBAP characterization of the VoIP traffic, taking into account a non‐zero probability of non‐conforming packets. Chloroquine is commonly used in the treatment and prevention of malaria, but Plasmodium falciparum, the main species responsible for malaria‐related deaths, has developed resistance against this drug. Twenty‐seven novel chloroquine (CQ) analogues characterized by a side chain terminated with a bulky basic head group, i.e., octahydro‐2H‐quinolizine and 1,2,3,4,5,6‐hexahydro‐1,5‐methano‐8H‐pyrido[1,2‐a][1,5]diazocin‐8‐one, were synthesized and tested for activity against D‐10 (CQ‐susceptible) and W‐2 (CQ‐resistant) strains of P. falciparum. Most compounds were found to be active against both strains with nanomolar or sub‐micromolar IC50 values. Eleven compounds were found to be 2.7‐ to 13.4‐fold more potent than CQ against the W‐2 strain; among them, four cytisine derivatives appear to be of particular interest, as they combine high potency with low cytotoxicity against two human cell lines (HMEC‐1 and HepG2) along with easier synthetic accessibility. Replacement of the 4‐NH group with a sulfur bridge maintained antiplasmodial activity at a lower level, but produced an improvement in the resistance factor. These compounds warrant further investigation as potential drugs for use in the fight against malaria.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to compare different bacterial models for in vitro induction of non‐cavitated enamel caries‐like lesions by microhardness and polarized light microscopy analyses. One hundred blocks of bovine enamel were randomly divided into four groups (n = 25) according to the bacterial model for caries induction: (A) Streptococcus mutans, (B) S. mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus, (C) S. mutans and L. casei, and (D) S. mutans, L. acidophilus, and L. casei. Within each group, the blocks were randomly divided into five subgroups according to the duration of the period of caries induction (4–20 days). The enamel blocks were immersed in cariogenic solution containing the microorganisms, which was changed every 48 h. Groups C and D presented lower surface hardness values (SMH) and higher area of hardness loss (ΔS) after the cariogenic challenge than groups A and B (P < 0.05). As regards lesion depth, under polarized light microscopy, group A presented significantly lower values, and groups C and D the highest values. Group B showed a higher value than group A (P < 0.05). Groups A and B exhibited subsurface caries lesions after all treatment durations, while groups C and D presented erosion‐type lesions with surface softening. The model using S. mutans, whether or not it was associated with L. acidophilus, was less aggressive and may be used for the induction of non‐cavitated enamel caries‐like lesions. Cyanobacterial blooms in drinking water reservoirs present a major ecosystem functioning and human health issue. The ability to predict reservoir vulnerability to these blooms would provide information critical for decision making, hazard prevention and management. We developed a new, comparative index of vulnerability based on simple measures of reservoir and catchment characteristics, rather than water quality data, which were instead used to test the index’s effectiveness. Testing was based on water quality data collected over a number of seasons and years from 15 drinking water reservoirs in subtropical, southeast Queensland. The index correlated significantly and strongly with algal cell densities, including potentially toxic cyanobacteria, as well as with the proportions of cyanobacteria in summer months. The index also performed better than each of the measures of reservoir and catchment characteristics alone, and as such, was able to encapsulate the physical characteristics of subtropical reservoirs, and their catchments, into an effective indicator of the vulnerability to summer blooms. This was further demonstrated by calculating the index for a new reservoir to be built within the study region. Under planned dimensions and land use, a comparatively high level of vulnerability was reached within a few years. However, the index score and the number of years taken to reach a similar level of vulnerability could be reduced simply by decreasing the percentage of grazing land cover via revegetation within the catchment. With climate change, continued river impoundment and the growing demand for potable water, our index has potential decision making benefits when planning future reservoirs to reduce their vulnerability to cyanobacterial blooms.  相似文献

In this paper we show that modification of ceria by loading alumina strongly reduces the oxidation of methanol and the consequent reduction of Ce(IV) to Ce(III) with increase of both the life of the catalysts and their selectivity. The combination of surface techniques (XPS and BET) with structural techniques (XRD) has allowed a good characterisation of the working catalysts. Spectroscopic analyses (DRIFT and multinuclear solid state and solution NMR) have permitted the monitoring of the species formed on the surface of the catalyst and released from it. The formation of DMC takes place in successive steps such as (i) interaction of methanol with the catalyst surface with the formation of the surface-bound OCH3; (ii) building on the catalyst surface of the hemicarbonate moiety [–OCH3  –OC(O)OCH3]; and (iii) reaction of the latter with the gas-phase methanol to afford the organic carbonate.  相似文献

A full-band Monte Carlo model has been developed for understanding the carrier multiplication process in HgCdTe infrared avalanche photodiodes. The proposed model is based on a realistic electronic structure obtained by pseudopotential calculations and a phonon dispersion relation determined by ab initio techniques. The calculated carrier–phonon scattering rates are consistent with the electronic structure and the phonon dispersion relation, thus removing adjustable parameters such as deformation potential coefficients. The computation of the impact ionization transition rate is based on the calculated electronic structure and the corresponding wavevector-dependent dielectric function. The Monte Carlo model is applied to investigate key performance figures of long-wavelength infrared (LWIR) and mid-wavelength infrared (MWIR) HgCdTe avalanche photodetectors such as carrier multiplication and noise properties. Good agreement is achieved between simulations and experimental results. The multiplication process in LWIR (λ c = 9.0 μm at 80 K) and MWIR (λ c = 5.1 μm at 80 K) devices is found to be initiated only by electrons, as expected from excess noise measurements. This single-carrier multiplication behavior can be traced back to the details of the computed valence-band structure and phonon scattering rates.  相似文献
