Population balance models have been used in chemical engineering since the 1960s and have evolved to become the most important tools for design and control of particulate processes. In this paper we show that the intrinsic particle parameter that determines changes in the process and should thus be included in the population balance is the particle volume. The basic population that is modeled should be the mass distribution, or the volume distribution if the density is constant. The population balance thus describes the change of the volume distribution of volume with time. Furthermore, we suggest that the “birth” and “death” terms that are often used to describe discrete events in particulate processes can almost always be replaced by a rate of change term.To design and control existing and future processes, a multi-dimensional population balance model is required. We propose a volume-based model in which the particle properties that are modeled are the volumes of solid, liquid, and air, respectively. In the most general case the model will consist of a properties vector and a distribution tensor. Depending on the complexity of the process, one or more of the properties may be omitted from the model. The objective of this work was to demonstrate the utility of lignin-based resins designed for application as an adhesive in the production of particleboard. Bond qualities of lignin-phenol-formaldehyde resins, phenolated-lignin-formaldehyde resins and commercial phenol-formaldehyde (PF-com) resin were assessed by using an automatic bonding evaluation system, prior to production of particleboards. In order to evaluate the quality of lignin-based resins, particleboards were produced and physical and mechanical properties were investigated. These physical properties included internal bond, modules of rupture and modulus of elasticity. Thickness swell and water absorption properties of particleboards bonded with lignin-based resins were also determined. The lignin-based resins have been reported previously in Part I of this study. The results showed that particleboards bonded with phenolated-lignin formaldehyde resins (up to 30% lignin content) exhibited similar physical and mechanical properties when compared to particleboards bonded with PF-com. The work has indicated that phenolated-lignin formaldehyde resins (up to 30% substitution level) can be used successfully as a wood adhesive for constructing particleboard. Partial differential equations describing the transport of mass and electricity in the pores of the positive electrode of a lead acid battery were derived. The theory is based on exact transport equations and on the assumption that the solid porous matrix has a metallic conductivity. Volume changes in both phases are taken into account. Numerical solutions obtained on a computer are presented for the case where the influence of electrolyte between the electrodes can be neglected. The solutions depend on the product of electrode thickness times current density, and on the initial porosity. 相似文献
The objective of the present study was to determine the mechanisms by which dietary proteins interact with dietary lipids
in the regulation of triglyceridemia in rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (n=56) were subjected to 28-d experimental diets containing different combinations of proteins (20% w/w) and lipid sources (14%
w/w): (i) casein-menhaden oil, (ii) casein-beef tallow, (iii) soy protein-menhaden oil, and (iv) soy protein-beef tallow.
Significant protein-lipid interactions were observed on triglyceridemia and hepatic cholesterol in fasted rats. The combination
of casein and beef tallow was associated with high plasma TG and hepatic cholesterol concentrations, which were reduced by
substitution either of soy for casein or of menhaden oil for beef tallow. Therefore, triglyceridemia and liver cholesterol
remained low with soy protein feeding, independently of the lipid source, as well as with menhaden oil feeding, regardless
of the protein source. The menhaden oil diets reduced plasma cholesterol, hepatic TG, and TG secretion compared with beef
tallow diets independently of the dietary protein source. Modifying the source of dietary proteins and lipids had no effect
on post-heparin plasma lipoprotein lipase activity. These results demonstrate that soy protein can lower rat triglyceridemia
relative to casein when associated with beef tallow consumption, whereas menhaden oil can attenuate hypertriglyceridemia when
rats are fed casein. The data further suggest that part of the hypotriglyceridemic effect of soy protein in the rat may be
mediated by reduced hepatic lipid synthesis, as is the case for menhaden oil. 相似文献
Male and female weanling rats that were born to dams fed a diet low in linolenic acid received diets of 15% lipids by weight
containing 45% elaidic acid (as trielaidin) and 8.5% or 0.1% linolenic acid for 10 weeks. Four other groups, in which palmitic
or oleic acid replaced elaidic acid in the diet, served as controls. The fatty acid profiles of several lipid classes were
determined in adipose tissue, adrenals, testes, heart and brain. Elaidic acid was incorporated into tissue lipids in varying
degrees, depending on the organ and on the lipid class. Feeding elaidic acid induced no changes in the polyunsaturated fatty
acid (PUFA) profiles of testes lipids but resulted in definite modifications of the PUFA patterns of heart phosphatidylcholine
(PC) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE). In linolenic acid-deprived rats, arachidonic acid was decreased in PC and linoleic
acid was increased in both PC and PE; 22∶5n−6 was strongly depressed in both PC and PE. In linolenic acid-fed rats, 22∶6n−3
was decreased in PC and PE. These changes, on the whole, were more evident in females, and some also were observed in adrenal
cholesteryl esters but only slightly in brain phospholipids. the apparent inhibition of the biosynthesis of PUFA induced by
dietary elaidic acid appeared to be complex and of greater intensity in the n−6 fatty acid series than in their n−3 homologues. 相似文献
In situ esterifications of high-acidity rice bran oil with methanol and ethanol and with sulfuric acid as catalyst were investigated.
In the esterification with methanol, all free fatty acids (FFA) dissolved in methanol were interesterified within 15 min,
and it was possible to obtain nearly pure methyl esters. The amount of methyl esters obtained from a given rice bran was dependent
on the FFA content of the rice bran oil. In the esterification with ethanol, it was not possible to obtain pure esters as
in methanol esterification, because the solubilities of oil components in ethanol were much higher than those in methanol. 相似文献
The flow structure of a continuous‐flow reactor stirred by a Rushton turbine was investigated by laser Doppler velocimetry for two different mean residence time‐mixing time ratios. Velocity measurements were obtained for two inlet locations, corresponding to the incoming liquid stream being fed co‐currently or counter‐currently to the flow discharged by the turbine. In all investigated configurations and for all operating conditions, it was found that the flow disruption caused by the incoming liquid stream was observable mainly in the first vessel quarter, which followed the feed‐tube plane. From comparison of the velocities encountered in the various planes in the continuous‐flow reactor to the velocities of the batch reactor, it was also concluded that it may be possible to intensify the usage of the turbine‐stirred vessel by decreasing the characteristic times ratio, without considerable flow by‐pass and/or short‐circuiting problems. 相似文献
This paper first presents a novel approach for modelling facial features, Local Directional Texture (LDT), which exploits the unique directional information in image textures for the problem of face recognition. A variant of LDT with privacy-preserving temporal strips (TS) is then considered to achieve faceless recognition with a higher degree of privacy while maintaining high accuracy. The TS uses two strips of pixel blocks from the temporal planes, XT and YT, for face recognition. By removing the reliance on spatial context (i.e., XY plane) for this task, the proposed method withholds facial appearance information from public view, where only one-dimensional temporal information that varies across time are extracted for recognition. Thus, privacy is assured, yet without impeding the facial recognition task which is vital for many security applications such as street surveillance and perimeter access control. To validate the reliability of the proposed method, experiments were carried out using the Honda/UCSD, CK+, CAS(ME)2 and CASME II databases. The proposed method achieved a recognition rate of 98.26% in the standard video-based face recognition database, Honda/UCSD. It also offers a 81.92% reduction in the dimension length required for storing the extracted features, in contrast to the conventional LBP-TOP.
