Beads of chitosan (CS) crosslinked network and of chitosan/poly(ethylene oxide) (CS/PEO) semi‐interpenetrating network (semi‐IPN) were prepared by a dropping technique and characterized. PEO content in the beads of semi‐IPN was determined by gel permeation chromatography. CS crosslinking ratio was evaluated qualitatively by ATR‐FTIR spectroscopy and quantitatively by UV spectrophotometry. After drying in a fluidized bed apparatus, a monodisperse population of well individualized, spherical, and smooth particles was obtained. It was shown that bead collapsus during the drying stage was avoided thanks to the chemical crosslinking of CS chains. By the prilling, or laminar jet break‐up technology, production at a larger scale was also achieved. This process allowed the formation of a row of well calibrated drops of polymer solution under the influence of a vibration. Polymer solution characteristics, particularly viscosity, constituted a critical factor in the feasibility of the prilling process. Transposition of the formulation was managed through the optimization of process parameters such as vibration frequency, amplitude, and flow rate. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The present paper deals with the synthesis of porous, sintered glass‐ceramics obtained at temperatures below 1150°C, originating from inorganic polymers based on fayalite slag. Firing led to the evaporation of water, dehydroxylation, and oxidation of Fe2+ above 345°C. For heating >700°C, the Si–O stretching band shifted from the 1160 and 750 cm?1 to the 1255 and 830 cm?1 region, due to a structural reorganization of the amorphous phase, whereas Fe–O bands appeared at 550 cm?1. The final microstructure consisted predominantly of an amorphous phase, hematite, and franklinite. The open porosity and compressive strength decreased and increased, respectively, as the firing temperature increased. The final values suggest properties comparable to that of structural lightweight concrete, still, the materials synthesized herein, are lighter, and made primarily from secondary resources. 相似文献

The catabolism and structure of high‐density lipoproteins (HDL) may be the determining factor of their atheroprotective properties. To better understand the role of the kidney in HDL catabolism, here we characterized HDL subclasses and the catabolic rates of apo A‐I in a rabbit model of proteinuria. Proteinuria was induced by intravenous administration of doxorubicin in New Zealand white rabbits (n = 10). HDL size and HDL subclass lipids were assessed by electrophoresis of the isolated lipoproteins. The catabolic rate of HDL‐apo A‐I was evaluated by exogenous radiolabelling with iodine‐131. Doxorubicin induced significant proteinuria after 4 weeks (4.47 ± 0.55 vs. 0.30 ± 0.02 g/L of protein in urine, P < 0.001) associated with increased uremia, creatininemia, and cardiotoxicity. Large HDL2b augmented significantly during proteinuria, whereas small HDL3b and HDL3c decreased compared to basal conditions. HDL2b, HDL2a, and HDL3a subclasses were enriched with triacylglycerols in proteinuric animals as determined by the triacylglycerol‐to‐phospholipid ratio; the cholesterol content in HDL subclasses remained unchanged. The fractional catabolic rate (FCR) of [131I]‐apo A‐I in the proteinuric rabbits was faster (FCR = 0.036 h?1) compared to control rabbits group (FCR = 0.026 h?1, P < 0.05). Apo E increased and apo A‐I decreased in HDL, whereas PON‐1 activity increased in proteinuric rabbits. Proteinuria was associated with an increased number of large HDL2b particles and a decreased number of small HDL3b and 3c. Proteinuria was also connected to an alteration in HDL subclass lipids, apolipoprotein content of HDL, high paraoxonase‐1 activity, and a rise in the fractional catabolic rate of the [131I]‐apo A‐I. 相似文献

A new concept that attributes a pivotal role to the pericellular coat in the regulation of the early stages of cell adhesion is presented. Quick, adaptable, and transient adhesion through multiple cooperative weak interactions provides the cell with an additional level of modulation in the decision-making process that precedes the commitment to adhesion at a particular site. Hyaluronan emerges as a modulator of cell adhesion in certain cells, mediating binding or repulsion through its polyelectrolyte character, in addition to its chirality and molecular-recognition properties. The biophysical properties of hyaluronan as well as its ultrastructural organization are analyzed in relation to this proposed function. 相似文献

The mechanical properties of ceramic foams obtained through a novel process that uses the direct foaming and pyrolysis of preceramic polymer/polyurethane solutions were investigated. The elastic modulus, flexural strength, and compressive strengths were obtained for foams in the as-pyrolyzed condition; values up to 7.1 GPa, 13 MPa, and 11 MPa, respectively, were obtained. The strength of the foam was virtually unchanged at temperatures up to 1200°C in air; however, long-term exposure at 1200°C led to a moderate degradation in strength, which was attributed to the evolution of intrastrut porosity during the oxidation of residual free carbon, as well as devitrification of the foams struts. 相似文献

The assessment of cognitive function in early life has recently become an issue for consideration in long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (LC-PUFA) supplementation studies. This article reviews the various means by which such assessment has been done in past LC-PUFA supplementation studies and provides some background on recent advances in the measurement of infant cognition that may need to be considered when planning or designing future supplementation studies. These include (i) consideration of the specificity of LC-PUFA effects on cognition, (ii) inclusion of multiple tasks or levels of measurement as outcome measures, and (iii) a stronger emphasis on developmental processes in the design of such studies. 相似文献

We present the development of an ink containing chopped fibers that is suitable for direct ink writing (DIW), enabling to obtain ceramic matrix composite (CMC) structures with complex shape. We take advantage of the unique formability opportunities provided by the use of a preceramic polymer as both polymeric binder and ceramic source. Inks suitable for the extrusion of fine filaments (<1 mm diameter) and containing a relatively high amount of fibers (>30 vol% for a nozzle diameter of 840 μm) were formulated. Despite some optimization of ink rheology still being needed, complex CMC structures with porosity of ~75% and compressive strength of ~4 MPa were successfully printed. The process is of particular interest for its ability to orient the fibers in the extrusion direction due to the shear stresses generated at the nozzle tip. This phenomenon was observed in the production of polymer matrix composites, but it is here employed for the first time for the production of ceramic matrix ones. The possibility to align high aspect ratio fillers using DIW opens the path to layer‐by‐layer design for optimizing the mechanical and microstructural properties within a printed object, and could potentially be extended to other types of fillers. 相似文献

The T‐cell receptor–CD3 complex (TCR–CD3) serves a critical role in protecting organisms from infectious agents. The TCR is a heterodimer composed of α‐ and β‐chains, which are responsible for antigen recognition. Within the transmembrane domain of the α‐subunit, a region has been identified to be crucial for the assembly and function of the TCR. This region, termed core peptide (CP), consists of nine amino acids (GLRILLLKV), two of which are charged (lysine and arginine) and are crucial for the interaction with CD3. Earlier studies have shown that a synthetic peptide corresponding to the CP sequence can suppress the immune response in animal models of T‐cell‐mediated inflammation, by disrupting proper assembly of the TCR. As a step towards the understanding of the source of the CP activity, we focused on CP in egg phosphatidylcholine/cholesterol (9:1, mol/mol) model membranes and determined its secondary structure, oligomerization state, and orientation with respect to the membrane. To achieve this goal, 15‐residue segments of TCRα, containing the CP, were synthesized and spin‐labeled at different locations with a nitroxide derivative. Electron spin‐echo envelope modulation spectroscopy was used to probe the position and orientation of the peptides within the membrane, and double electron–electron resonance measurements were used to probe its conformation and oligomerization state. We found that the peptide is predominantly helical in a membrane environment and tends to form oligomers (mostly dimers) that are parallel to the membrane plane. 相似文献

Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSCs), based on TiO2 and assembled using a dye from Beta vulgaris extract (BVE) with Tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), are reported. The dye BVE/TEOS increased its UV resistance, rendering an increase in the cell lifetime; the performance of these solar cells was compared to those prepared with BVE without TEOS. The efficiency η for the solar energy conversion was, for BVE and BVE/TEOS, of 0.89% ± 0.006% and 0.68% ± 0.006% with a current density Jsc of 2.71 ± 0.003 mA/cm2 and 2.08 ± 0.003 mA/cm2, respectively, using in both cases an irradiation of 100 mW/cm2 at 25 °C. The efficiency of the BVE solar cell dropped from 0.9 ± 0.006 to 0.85 ± 0.006 after 72 h of operation, whereas for the BVE/TEOS, the efficiency remained practically constant in the same period of time. 相似文献
