Phytostabilization of mine tailings acts to mitigate both eolian dispersion and water erosion events which can disseminate barren tailings over large distances. This technology uses plants to establish a vegetative cover to permanently immobilize contaminants in the rooting zone, often requiring addition of an amendment to assist plant growth. Here we report the results of a greenhouse study that evaluated the ability of six native plant species to grow in extremely acidic (pH ~ 2.5) metalliferous (As, Pb, Zn: 2000-3000 mg kg(-1)) mine tailings from Iron King Mine Humboldt Smelter Superfund site when amended with a range of compost concentrations. Results revealed that three of the six plant species tested (buffalo grass, mesquite, and catclaw acacia) are good candidates for phytostabilization at an optimum level of 15% compost (w/w) amendment showing good growth and minimal shoot accumulation of metal(loid)s. A fourth candidate, quailbush, also met all criteria except for exceeding the domestic animal toxicity limit for shoot accumulation of zinc. A key finding of this study was that the plant species that grew most successfully on these tailings significantly influenced key tailings parameters; direct correlations between plant biomass and both increased tailings pH and neutrophilic heterotrophic bacterial counts were observed. We also observed decreased iron oxidizer counts and decreased bioavailability of metal(loid)s mainly as a result of compost amendment. Taken together, these results suggest that the phytostabilization process reduced tailings toxicity as well as the potential for metal(loid) mobilization. This study provides practical information on plant and tailings characteristics that is critically needed for successful implementation of assisted phytostabilization on acidic, metalliferous mine tailings sites.  相似文献

Intermodulation atomic force microscopy (IMAFM) is a dynamic mode of atomic force microscopy (AFM) with two-tone excitation. The oscillating AFM cantilever in close proximity to a surface experiences the nonlinear tip-sample force which mixes the drive tones and generates new frequency components in the cantilever response known as intermodulation products (IMPs). We present a procedure for extracting the phase at each IMP and demonstrate phase images made by recording this phase while scanning. Amplitude and phase images at intermodulation frequencies exhibit enhanced topographic and material contrast.  相似文献

While crowdsourcing may strengthen a company's innovation performance, it is only rarely embedded in organizations as an innovation practice. Our action research shows that organizations often struggle with crowdsourcing projects as they represent a different form of innovation projects and require additional capabilities and skills e.g., to frame a crowd challenge, deal with IP rights, manage the crowd, or integrate the vast input into innovation projects. To overcome these problems, organizations have to invest in project-led learning to establish easy-to-use templates and routines e.g., to handle offered incentives or the applied winner selection processes. They further need to enable business-led learning as the established innovation structures, processes, and management practices do not cope with crowdsourcing projects and present some rigidities causing high coordination efforts. Organizations that are willing to run a number of consecutive crowdsourcing projects may rapidly improve their capabilities and even come up with scalable crowdsourcing services. Our findings further suggest that crowdsourcing, digital platforms, artificial intelligence, and as-a-service approaches may also add to general project capability building.  相似文献

High power impulse magnetron sputtering (HIPIMS) has gained increasing scientific and industrial attention as it allows high plasma densities without the drawback of droplet formation. Recently, we showed that by a combination of HIPIMS with dc magnetron sputtering the properties of the coatings are comparable to those prepared solely with HIPIMS, but with the advantage of increased deposition rate.Here, we show that for CrNHIPIMS/TiNDCMS multilayered coatings the friction coefficient µ decreases from 0.7 to 0.35 (with an almost constant hardness H around 25 GPa, and modulus of indentation around 375 GPa) when decreasing the bilayer period λ from 7.8 to 6.4 nm, while keeping the CrNHIPIMS layer thickness constant at 3.2 nm. A further reduction of the friction coefficient at room temperature dry-sliding testing to ∼ 0.25 or 0.05 is obtained when an additional HIPIMS cathode equipped with a Cr or Ti target material, respectively, is added to the process. Contact angle measurements of distilled water drops on as deposited film surfaces were carried out to investigate their wettability. The measurements show, that with increasing contact angle from 70° to 90°, for the individual coatings prepared, also their friction coefficient increases from ∼ 0.05 to ∼ 0.8. The depositions of all coatings were achieved with two- and threefold substrate rotation, which meet the industrial requirements of uniform deposition on complex shaped specimens.  相似文献

Here we use nuclear magnetic resonance to measure the solubility limit of several biologically relevant sterols in electroformed giant unilamellar vesicle membranes containing phosphatidylcholine (PC) lipids in ratios of 1:1:X DOPC:DPPC:sterol. We find solubility limits of cholesterol, lanosterol, ergosterol, stigmasterol, and β-sitosterol to be 65-70%, ~35%, 30-35%, 20-25%, and ~40%, respectively. The low solubilities of stigmasterol and β-sitosterol, which differ from cholesterol only in their alkyl tails, show that subtle differences in tail structure can strongly affect sterol solubility. Below the solubility limits, the fraction of sterol to PC-lipid in electroformed vesicles linearly reflects the fraction in the original stock solutions used in the electroformation process.  相似文献

The phenomenon of contact electrification (CE) has been known for thousands of years, but the nature of the charge carriers and their transfer mechanisms are still under debate. Here, the CE and triboelectric charging process are studied for a metal–dielectric case at different thermal conditions by using atomic force microscopy and Kelvin probe force microscopy. The charge transfer process at the nanoscale is found to follow the modified thermionic‐emission model. In particular, the focus here is on the effect of a temperature difference between two contacting materials on the CE. It is revealed that hotter solids tend to receive positive triboelectric charges, while cooler solids tend to be negatively charged, which suggests that the temperature‐difference‐induced charge transfer can be attributed to the thermionic‐emission effect, in which the electrons are thermally excited and transfer from a hotter surface to a cooler one. Further, a thermionic‐emission band‐structure model is proposed to describe the electron transfer between two solids at different temperatures. The findings also suggest that CE can occur between two identical materials owing to the existence of a local temperature difference arising from the nanoscale rubbing of surfaces with different curvatures/roughness.  相似文献

Self‐powered photodetectors (PDs) have long been realized by utilizing photovoltaic effect and their performances can be effectively enhanced by introducing the piezo‐phototronic effect. Recently, a novel pyro‐phototronic effect is invented as an alternative approach for performance enhancement of self‐powered PDs. Here, a self‐powered organic/inorganic PD is demonstrated and the influences of externally applied strain on the pyro‐phototronic and the photovoltaic effects are thoroughly investigated. Under 325 nm 2.30 mW cm‐2 UV illumination and at a ‐0.45% compressive strain, the PD's photocurrent is dramatically enhanced from ≈14.5 to ≈103 nA by combining the pyro‐phototronic and piezo‐phototronic effects together, showing a significant improvement of over 600%. Theoretical simulations have been carried out via the finite element method to propose the underlying working mechanism. Moreover, the pyro‐phototronic effect can be introduced by applying a ‐0.45% compressive strain to greatly enhance the PD's response to 442 nm illumination, including photocurrent, rise time, and fall time. This work provides in‐depth understandings about the pyro‐phototronic and the piezo‐phototronic effects on the performances of self‐powered PD to light sources with different wavelengths and indicates huge potential of these two effects in optoelectronic devices.  相似文献

After oral administration, drug absorption rate is recognized to be dependent on two major factors: dissolution and intestinal cells permeability. Caco-2 monolayer cells have been largely used as a permeation study model. In this study, a numerical approach funded on an exponential first-order time relationship was tested to compare immediate- and controlled-release tablets of theophylline using a dissolution-permeation system. The dissolution performance using USP II paddle apparatus was coupled to the permeability studies investigated in Caco-2 cell monolayers. The dissolved samples were taken at different times; their pH and osmolarity were adjusted to render them suitable to Caco-2 permeability studies (osmolarity = 300 mosm, pH = 7.4). The experimental data show that the dissolution fits the exponential first-order relationship rate. The permeability values were in a range of 4.45 10- 6-5.28 10- 6 cm/s, and percentages of absorbed drug dose were dependent on the fraction initially present in the donor compartment, indicating that absorption of theophylline was dissolution rate limited. Plotting experimental absorbed fractions (Fa) against experimental dissolved fractions (Fd) show that permeation is the rate-limiting step in drug absorption process in the extended release form of theophylline. Our results demonstrate a general agreement between observed Fa/Fd relationships and theoretical Fa/Fd relationships obtained with our approach funded on dissolution and permeation behavior. We concluded that the couple dissolution-caco-2 system could be a useful tool to characterize intestinal permeation for a new formulation of a drug compared with the conventional one.  相似文献
