This paper focuses on the design and performance of a very tall mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) wall. Expansion of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport called for the construction of a third runway west of the two existing runways. A significant volume of compacted earth fill was required to raise the grade as much as 50 m to meet the level of the existing airfield. Nominal 2H:1V fill slopes were used where possible, but MSE retaining walls were used where fill slopes would have encroached into existing wetlands. Consequently a four-tier 46-m-tall MSE wall was constructed along a portion of the western edge of the embankment. Performance monitoring included strain gauge-instrumented reinforcing strips, inclinometer installations with sondex settlement rings, optical survey of the wall facing for vertical and lateral movements, and piezometers. This paper describes wall design issues, aspects associated with the instrumentation of the wall, and the observed performance. Monitoring indicates satisfactory performance of the MSE wall and compares reasonably well with predicted performance.  相似文献

We consider an ad-hoc wireless network operating within a free market economic model. Users send data over a choice of paths, and scheduling and routing decisions are updated dynamically based on time varying channel conditions, user mobility, and current network prices charged by intermediate nodes. Each node sets its own price for relaying services, with the goal of earning revenue that exceeds its time average reception and transmission expenses. We first develop a greedy pricing strategy that maximizes social welfare while ensuring all participants make non-negative profit. We then construct a (non-greedy) policy that balances profits more evenly by optimizing a profit fairness metric. Both algorithms operate in a distributed manner and do not require knowledge of traffic rates or channel statistics. This work demonstrates that individuals can benefit from carrying wireless devices even if they are not interested in their own personal communication.  相似文献

We consider the problem of optimal scheduling and routing in an ad-hoc wireless network with multiple traffic streams and time varying channel reliability. Each packet transmission can be overheard by a subset of receiver nodes, with a transmission success probability that may vary from receiver to receiver and may also vary with time. We develop a simple backpressure routing algorithm that maximizes network throughput and expends an average power that can be pushed arbitrarily close to the minimum average power required for network stability, with a corresponding tradeoff in network delay. When channels are orthogonal, the algorithm can be implemented in a distributed manner using only local link error probability information, and supports a “blind transmission” mode (where error probabilities are not required) in special cases when the power metric is neglected and when there is only a single destination for all traffic streams. For networks with general inter-channel interference, we present a distributed algorithm with constant-factor optimality guarantees.  相似文献

A skill training and a sensitivity training approach to improved effectiveness of performance in small groups were compared. No differcnce was found in the amount of improvement gained by participation in the different training approaches. Both training groups rated themselves as having significantly improved their group effectiveness while a no-training control group showed no change. Group leaders, interacting with these students in small discussion sessions, also rated the students' performance as significantly improved after training. The reactions of N-phenylphthalimide films with ozone have been studied under a variety of conditions: dry ozone, moist ozone, ozone plus ultraviolet light, as well as ozone plus water vapor plus ultraviolet light. This compound is a conveniently available model for imide polymers. These reaction conditions represent simulation of certain aspects of the space environment. For each set of reaction conditions the reaction products were determined by combined gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Semiempirical molecular orbital computations were made of the relative energetics of possible reaction pathways consistent with the generation of the observed products. The reaction products found indicate fragmentation of the imidic moiety for which the energetics are favorable.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: 1) To evaluate transient evoked otoacoustic emission (TEOAE) test performance when measurements are made under routine clinical conditions. 2) To evaluate TEOAE test performance as a function of frequency and as a function of the magnitude of hearing loss. 3) To compare test performance using univariate and multivariate approaches to data analyses. 4) To provide a means of interpreting clinical TEOAE measurements. DESIGN: TEOAEs were measured in 452 ears of 246 patients. All measurements were made after acoustic immittance assessments, which were used to demonstrate that middle-ear function was normal at the time of the TEOAE test. TEOAE amplitudes and signal to noise ratios (SNRs), analyzed into octave bands centered at 1, 2, and 4 kHz, were compared with the pure-tone threshold at the same frequencies. Data were analyzed with clinical decision theory, cumulative distributions, discriminant analyses, and logistic regressions. RESULTS: Using univariate analysis techniques, TEOAEs accurately identified auditory status at 2 and 4 kHz but were less accurate at 1 kHz. Test performance was best when audiometric thresholds between 20 and 30 dB HL were used as the criteria for normal hearing. TEOAE SNR resulted in better test performance than did TEOAE amplitude alone; this effect decreased as frequency increased. Multivariate analysis methods resulted in better separation between normal and impaired ears than did univariate approaches, which relied on only TEOAE amplitude or SNR when test frequency band and audiometric frequency were the same. This improvement in test performance was greatest at 1 kHz, decreased as frequency increased, and was negligible at 4 kHz. CONCLUSIONS: TEOAEs can be used to identify hearing loss in children under routine clinical conditions. Univariate tests accurately identified auditory status at mid and high frequencies but performed more poorly at lower frequencies. The decrease in performance as frequency decreases may be a result of increased noise at lower frequencies but also may be due to properties of the measurement paradigm ("QuickScreen," high-pass filter at 0.8 kHz), which would not be ideal for recording energy around 1 kHz. The improvement in test performance when SNR was used and the interaction of this effect with frequency, however, would be consistent with the view that test performance in lower frequencies is at least partially influenced by the level of background noise. Multivariate analysis techniques improved test performance compared with the more traditional univariate approaches to data analysis. An approach is provided that allows one to assign measured TEOAE amplitudes, SNRs, or outputs from multivariate analyses to one of three categories: response properties consistent with normal hearing; results consistent with hearing loss; hearing status undetermined.  相似文献

We consider power and server allocation in a multibeam satellite downlink which transmits data to N different ground locations over N time-varying channels. Packets destined for each ground location are stored in separate queues and the server rate for each queue, i, depends on the power, p/sub i/(t), allocated to that server and the channel state, c/sub i/(t), according to a concave rate-power curve /spl mu//sub i/(p/sub i/,c/sub i/). We establish the capacity region of all arrival rate vectors (/spl lambda//sub 1/,...,/spl lambda//sub N/) which admit a stabilizable system. We then develop a power-allocation policy which stabilizes the system whenever the rate vector lies within the capacity region. Such stability is guaranteed even if the channel model and the specific arrival rates are unknown. Furthermore, the algorithm is shown to be robust to arbitrary variations in the input rates and a bound on average delay is established. As a special case, this analysis verifies stability and provides a performance bound for the choose-the-K-largest-connected-queues policy when channels can be in one of two states (ON or OFF ) and K servers are allocated at every timestep (K相似文献

The mechanism of bitemporal hemianopia is still unclear. Previous research suggested that the nerve fiber packing pattern may contribute to the selective damage of nasal (crossed) nerve fibers. Numerical models were built using finite element modeling to study the biomechanics of optic nerve fibers. The sensitivity of the mechanical behaviors of the nerve fibers to variations of five parameters in the nerve fiber model were investigated using design of experiments (DOE). Results show that the crossing angle is a very significant factor that affects a wide range of responses of the model. The strain difference between the crossed and the uncrossed nerve fibers may account for the phenomenon of bitemporal hemianopia. This work also highlights the need for more accurate material properties of the tissues in the model and an improved understanding of the microstructure of the optic chiasm.  相似文献
