30 college male meditators had a 20-min. meditation followed by a 6-min. waking phase prior to 5-min. continuous practice on the pursuit rotor task. This was followed by a 4-min. rest then a further 2-min. of pursuit rotor practice. A similar group of college males who were non-meditators (N = 30) followed the same procedures except that instead of meditating they sat quietly for the initial 20-min. period. The expectations that Transcendental Meditation would (a) facilitate learning and performance; (b) cause less within-subject variability; and (C) cause less reactive inhibition, (c) cause less reactive inhinition, were not upheld by the results. With the exception of performance, which was significantly lower for the meditators, the two groups were no different. Thus, it appears that certain reported physiological and psychological benefits that are attributed to the practice of Transcendental Meditation (such as less anxiety, greater consistency, more awareness, altertness, and attention) are not manifested in the present behavioral test of perceptural-motor function. In fact, in terms of performance, the meditators seemed to be at a disadvantage.  相似文献

Serum digoxin levels were examined in 55 patients with varying degrees of renal function impairment who were receiving chronic oral digoxin therapy. Three methods of predicting digoxin serum levels were investigated. Each method may be applied using serum creatinine values and does not require urinary data. Correlations between calculated and actual digoxin levels in combined male and female patients were improved when changes in digoxin distribution volumes in renal impairment were considered. Correlations between calculated and actual digoxin levels were poor in male patients but were again improved by incorporating changes in drug distribution volume. Correlations obtained in female patients were superior to those obtained in male patients and appeared to be independent of the method of calculation employed.  相似文献

Despite the decade-long study of the effect of nanoconfinement on the glass-transition temperature (T(g)) of amorphous materials, the quest to probe the distribution of T(g)s in nanoconfined glass formers has remained unfulfilled. Here the distribution of T(g)s across polystyrene films has been obtained by a fluorescence/multilayer method, revealing that the enhancement of dynamics at a surface affects T(g) several tens of nanometres into the film. The extent to which dynamics smoothly transition from enhanced to bulk states depends strongly on nanoconfinement. When polymer films are sufficiently thin that a reduction in thickness leads to a reduction in overall T(g), the surface-layer T(g) actually increases with a reduction in overall thickness, whereas the substrate-layer T(g) decreases. These results indicate that the gradient in T(g) dynamics is not abrupt, and that the size of a cooperatively rearranging region is much smaller than the distance over which interfacial effects propagate.  相似文献

Histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors such as butyrate have been reported to reduce diabetes risk and protect insulin-secreting pancreatic β cells in animal models. However, studies on insulin-secreting cells in vitro have found that butyrate treatment resulted in impaired or inappropriate insulin secretion. Our study explores the effects of butyrate on insulin secretion by BRIN BD-11 rat pancreatic β cells and examined effects on the expression of genes implicated in β cell function. Robust HDAC inhibition with 5 mM butyrate or trichostatin A for 24 h in β cells decreased basal insulin secretion and content, as well as insulin secretion in response to acute stimulation. Treatment with butyrate also increased expression of the disallowed gene hexokinase I, possibly explaining the impairment to insulin secretion, and of TXNIP, which may increase oxidative stress and β cell apoptosis. In contrast to robust HDAC inhibition (>70% after 24 h), low-dose and acute high-dose treatment with butyrate enhanced nutrient-stimulated insulin secretion. In conclusion, although protective effects of HDAC inhibition have been observed in vivo, potent HDAC inhibition impairs β cell function in vitro. The chronic low dose and acute high dose butyrate treatments may be more reflective of in vivo effects.  相似文献

Learning effects were assessed for the block design (BD) task, on the basis of variation in 2 stimulus parameters: perceptual cohesiveness (PC) and set size uncertainty (U). Thirty-one nonclinical undergraduate students (19 female) each completed 3 designs for each of 4 varied sets of the stimulus parameters (high-PC/high-U, high-PC/low-U, low-PC/high-U, and low-PC/low-U), ordered randomly within a larger set of designs with mixed stimulus characteristics. Regression analyses revealed significant, although modest, learning effects in all conditions. Negative-logarithmic learning slopes (growth factors) were greatest for high-U/high-PC designs and smallest for low-U/low-PC designs. Comparison of these slopes with known Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (3rd ed.; D. Wechsler, 1997; and 4th ed.; D. Wechsler, 2008) BD subtest gain scores demonstrated that presenting novel test items matched on stimulus parameters in multiple administrations reduced learning effects compared with the repeated use of the same test items. The results suggest that repeated administration of novel test items of the BD subtest, matched for PC and U, would result in more accurate assessments of changes in examinees’ abilities over time than would the use of the same items. Nitrocellulose based (NC) and nitroglycerin based (NG) propellants often have a fixed acid and water content during the manufacturing time. After manufacture, the quantity and ratio of acid/water will continue to vary depending upon the conditions of storage and operation. The level of variation depends on many factors such as loading density, temperature, volume of ullage and sealing condition of the containing cartridge, just to name a few. As described in this paper and other literature, the degradation mechanisms and aging processes of NC/NG based propellants are extremely complicated. This paper describes the details of the application of Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) to study if the free‐radical mechanism is involved in the decomposition of nitrocellulose and nitroglycerin. Due to the high free‐radical intensity possessed by the propellant composition, we believe that a π complex intermediate may be formed between DPA and NG and/or NC. The formation of a π complex intermediate is not preferred because it may enhance the rate of decomposition of nitrate esters.  相似文献

Recent investigations have shown that cycloaddition reactions, widely used in organic chemistry to form ring compounds, can also be applied to link organic molecules to the (001) surfaces of crystalline silicon, germanium, and diamond. While these surfaces are comprised of Si=Si, Ge=Ge, and C=C structural units that resemble the C=C bonds of organic alkenes, the rates and mechanisms of the surface reactions show some distinct differences from those of their organic counterparts This article reviews recent studies of [2 + 2], [4 + 2] Diels-Alder, and other cycloaddition reactions of organic molecules with semiconductor surfaces and summarizes the current understanding of the reaction pathways.  相似文献
