Atmospheric particle evolution during a nighttime atmospheric mercury depletion event in sub-Arctic at Kuujjuarapik/Whapmagoostui, Québec, Canada

During a field experiment at Kuujjuarapik/Whapmagoostui (55.31 degrees N, 77.75 degrees W), Quebec, we observed increases of concentrations of particles with diameters larger than 0.3 microm in the ambient air during a nighttime atmospheric mercury depletion event (AMDE). These increases were strongly correlated with decreases of ozone and atmospheric mercury, and we also observed a change in the particle size distribution during this AMDE. Assuming that these phenomena imply either a chemical link or an association through transport, we also studied the nature of this AMDE. We hypothesize that the observed AMDE was a result of an influx of already depleted air masses and that it was not a product of local chemical reactions.     

Review of Helping the Noncompliant Child: A Clinician's Guide to Parent Training.

Reviews the book, Helping the Noncompliant Child: A Clinician's Guide to Parent Training by Rex L. Forehand and Robert J. McMahon (1981). Clinicians working with families will find Helping the noncompliant child an invaluable book. The six chapters and four appendices provide a comprehensive program for training parents to engage in behaviours that will improve parent-child relationships. The treatment program consists of two phases. In the first phase parents are taught to increase their child's appropriate behaviours through the use of differential attention and rewards. This phase has two main purposes: teaching appropriate behaviours and increasing the "quality" time between parents and their children. These effects should increase the positiveness of the parent-child relationship, and help prevent a return to a coercive relationship. The second phase teaches parents to reduce the frequency of inappropriate behaviours through the use of appropriate commands and the use of time-out. The Gaseous Carburisation of Austenitic Steels

The paper is concerned with the corrosion behaviour of materials in high temperature gaseous carburisation environments and initially reviews the current ‘state-of-the-art’ in this field. Results of investigations carried out on three 25 Cr-20 Ni steels exposed to carburising H₂-CH₄ mixtures with a controlled carbon activity of 0.8 at 825°C and 1000°C are then presented. Kinetic data for exposure periods of up to 1100 hours are given and it is shown that gross carburisation of these alloys has occurred after only short exposures at 1000°C. The importance of alloy composition and surface condition, particularly during exposure at 825°C, is demonstrated. The results of surface and cross-sectional examinations using a range of optical, electron and X-ray techniques are reported. The use of a nuclear microprobe technique has enabled accurate carbon concentration profiles to be established and diffusion coefficients for the three alloys have been determined. In addition, the use of a magnetic technique for the non-destructive monitoring of the extent of sub-surface carburisation has been investigated.     

Sleep deprivation effects on the vestibular habituation process.

Studied the effects of sleep deprivation on habituation of the vestibular system in a stressful situation. 143 experienced pilots were exposed to 2 tests of Coriolis acceleration after periods of sleep deprivation (24-30 hrs) or rest (6 hrs). Nystagmus responses to Coriolis stimulation were recorded after 4 right-to-left tilts. Sleep deprivation resulted in (a) increased sensitivity to Coriolis stimulation, (b) a decreased recovery rate, and consequently, (c) interference with the vestibular habituation process. Fabrication of high-density UO2 and (U0.75Pu0.25)O2 by hot pressing

The hot pressing behavior of hyperstoichiometric UO₂ and (U, Pu)O₂ powders has been evaluated. Specimens with densities in excess of 99% $\text{ρ}{}_{\mathrm{th}}$ can be fabricated with this technique at temperatures of 1000°C or less.     

On Silverman and Saunders "Creating the mental illness culture."

Argues that Silverman and Saunders's (1980) conclusions regarding the creation of a mental illness culture are based on limited demographic information, consisting of admission rates to Ontario mental hospitals and some sociological and economic indices that are held to characterize the regions served by those hospitals. Emphasis is placed on Silverman and Saunders's conclusions that (a) there is confusion in the definition of mental illness, (b) there is legal impropriety in admitting and retaining many patients in mental hospitals, and (c) public funds would be better used in reducing the social and economic problems of mental patients, resulting in a decrease in the number of such patients.
