Arbitrarily primed PCR (AP-PCR) using a discriminatory 10-mer primer and an automated EcoRI ribotyping technique (Riboprinter) were compared for their ability to discriminate between 100 serovars of Salmonella, including multiple isolates representing Salm. Enteritidis PT4 and Salm. Typhimurium DT104. Profiles generated by each method were subjected to numerical analysis using GelCompar software, resulting in the construction of phylogenetic trees and calculation of Simpson's numerical index of diversity (DI). Both methods were highly discriminatory for isolates of Salmonella (Ribotype DI = 0.990, AP-PCR DI = 0.997) with EcoRI ribotyping proving more discriminatory than AP-PCR for isolates of Typhimurium DT104. The population structure was found to be clonal by numerical analysis of markers generated by both methods with serovars being polyphyletic in some cases and grouped in a single cluster in others. No absolute correlation was observed in the relationships between strains formed on the basis of ribo- and AP-PCR markers and serological characteristics.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: During atrial fibrillation (AF), the atrium is activated by multiple wavelets that continuously change in size and direction. The aim of this study was to correlate the temporal variation in AF electrogram configuration with the varying spatial patterns of activation. METHODS AND RESULTS: In a group of 25 Wolff-Parkinson-White patients undergoing cardiac surgery, the free wall of the right atrium was mapped (244 points) during electrically induced AF. The unipolar electrograms recorded during 4 seconds of AF were classified into four categories: (1) single deflections, (2) short-double potentials, (3) long-double potentials, and (4) fragmented potentials. The proportion of these four types of electrograms during AF was as follows: singles, 77 +/- 12%; short-doubles, 7 +/- 3%; long-doubles, 10 +/- 7%; and fragmented, 6 +/- 4%. Electrogram morphology was an indicator for rapid uniform conduction (single potentials; positive predictive value [PPV] of 0.96), collision (short-double potentials; PPV of 0.33), conduction block (long-double potentials; PPV of 0.84), and pivoting points or slow conduction (fragmented potentials; PPV of 0.87). In type I, II, and III AF, the proportion of long-double potentials was 4 +/- 2%, 12 +/- 3%, and 18 +/- 7% (P < .05); the proportion of fragmented complexes was 2 +/- 2%, 6 +/- 3%, and 10 +/- 4% (P < .05), respectively. During electrically induced and self-terminating episodes of AF, no preferential anatomic sites for double or fragmented potentials were found in the right atrium. CONCLUSIONS: The morphology of single unipolar electrograms during AF reflects the occurrence of various specific patterns of conduction. This might be used to differentiate between different types of AF and to identify regions with structural conduction disturbances involved in perpetuation of chronic AF.  相似文献

This study evaluated (a) whether chronic, medicated schizophrenia patients show deficits in emotion recognition compared to nonpatients, and (b) whether deficits in emotion recognition are related to poorer social competence. Two emotion recognition tests developed by S. L. Kerr and J. M. Neale (1993) and Benton's Test of Facial Recognition (A. Benton, M. VanAllen, K. Hamsher, & H. Levin, 1978) were given to patients with chronic schizophrenia and nonpatient controls. Patients' social skills, social adjustment, and symptomatology were assessed. Like Kerr and Neale's unmedicated patients, these patients performed worse than controls on both emotion recognition tests and the control test. For patients, facial perception was related to the chronicity of illness and social competence. The study of social cognition in schizophrenia may augment the understanding of clinical and behavioral manifestations of the disorder. In this article, the authors describe social cognition and differentiate it from nonsocial cognition. They garner evidence to support the role of social cognition in schizophrenia: Nonsocial information-processing models are limited to explain social dysfunction in schizophrenia, measures of social cognition may contribute greater variance to social functioning than measures of nonsocial cognition, task performance on nonsocial-cognitive measures may not parallel performance on social-cognitive tasks, and symptomatology may be best understood within a social-cognitive framework. They describe the potential implications of a social-cognitive model of schizophrenia for the etiology and development of the disorder. Peer review of research proposals and articles is an essential element in R&D processes worldwide. In most cases, each reviewer evaluates a small subset of the candidate proposals. The review board is then faced with the challenge of creating an overall “consensus” ranking on the basis of many partial rankings. In this paper we propose a branch-and-bound model to support the construction of an aggregate ranking from the partial rankings provided by the reviewers. In a recent paper we proposed ways to allocate proposals to reviewers so as to achieve the maximum possible overlap among the subsets of proposals allocated to different reviewers. Here, we develop a special branch-and-bound algorithm that utilizes the overlap generated through our earlier methods to enable discrimination in ranking the competing proposals. The effectiveness and efficiency of the algorithm is demonstrated with small numerical examples and tested through an extensive simulation experiment.  相似文献

Amine-terminated hexyl pendent groups were attached by direct chemical reaction to the surface of aramid engineering fiber. The number of groups attached was evaluated by two different methods of quantitative analysis, with parts per million sensitivity, and good agreement was found. Separate tests found no evidence for reaction of pendent groups with simple epoxy. A single filament pull-out test was used to assess directly the effect of the pendent groups on the fiber-matrix bond strength. The increased adhesive performance brought about by the presence of the pendent groups was ascribed either to a decrease in the initial crack size at the interface or to an increase in matrix modulus near the interface.  相似文献

Zero-valent iron particles are an effective remediation technology for ground water contaminated with halogenated organic compounds. In particular, nanoscale zero-valent iron is a promising material for remediation because of its high specific surface area, which results in faster rate constants and more effective use of the iron. An aspect of iron nanoparticle reactivity that has not been explored is the impact of anions present during iron metal nanoparticle synthesis. Solutions containing chloride, phosphate, sulfate, and nitrate anions and ferric ions were used to generate iron oxide nanoparticles. The resulting materials were dialyzed to remove dissolved by-products and then dried and reduced by hydrogen gas at high temperature. The reactivity of the resulting zero-valent iron nanoparticles was quantified by monitoring the kinetics as well as products of carbon tetrachloride reduction, and significant differences in reactivity and chloroform yield were observed. The reactivity of nanoparticles prepared in the presence of sulfate and phosphate demonstrated the highest reactivity and chloroform yield. Furthermore, substantial variations in the solid-state products of oxidation (magnetite, iron sulfide, goethite, etc.) were also observed.  相似文献

Fractal dimension (FD) is a feature which is widely used to characterize medical images. Previously, researchers have shown that FD separates important classes of images and provides distinctive information about texture. The authors analyze limitations of two principal methods of estimating FD: box-counting (BC) and power spectrum (PS). BC is ineffective when applied to data-limited, low-resolution images; PS is based on a fractional Brownian motion (fBm) model-a model which is not universally applicable. The authors also present background information on the use of fractal interpolation function (FIF) models to estimate FD of data which can be represented in the form of a function. They present a new method of estimating FD in which multiple FIF models are constructed. The mean of the FD's of the FIF models is taken as the estimate of the FD of the original data. The standard deviation of the FD's of the FIF models is used as a confidence measure of the estimate. The authors demonstrate how the new method can be used to characterize fractal texture of medical images. In a pilot study, they generated plots of curvature values around the perimeters of images of red blood cells from normal and sickle cell subjects. The new method showed improved separation of the image classes when compared to BC and PS methods  相似文献

Miyoshi-type distal muscular dystrophy (MMD) is an autosomal recessively inherited progressive disorder. The putative locus of MMD is linked to the limb-girdle muscular dystrophy 2B locus on chromosome 2p12-14. In this study three of four MMD pedigrees show non-linkage to the region spanned by D2S134-D2S358-D2S145 on chromosome 2p, indicating genetic heterogeneity. A genome wide screen was performed to identify loci linked to MMD. In two non-chromosome 2-linked families, a 23 cM region on chromosome 10 segregated with MMD.  相似文献
